International live music returns to the FCC Phnom Penh again this week with P. Jae Stanley and Swackhammer. The band hails from Ho Chi Minh City but the lead-singer originates from Washington and cites influences by Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack and Dionne Warwick. A full write-up of the gig is available at the FCC web site here.
As mentioned in a previous email, the authorities have been stamping out what they consider to be loud music. There are several theories about what is behind the cloak the said authorities use to obscure their actions. I mentioned mine being the outrageously thumpingly loud disco music from the old T3 prison site. The expectation is that it won't last long.
Two good pieces of news is also conveyed. This Saturday will see the much anticipated return of D'Sco: The Geckos of Love. Dan & Scott from the Geckos crooned and swooned their way through many a classic jazz ballad in the last half-of last year. If you haven't seen them then I urge you get to the Chinese House this Saturday. Also - be sure that Pontoon is still open and will feature Tim Coats and 2 local DJs this Friday.
The Cambodian Space Project played their gigs in Hong Kong and by all accounts had a total blast! They played 3 gigs and shot some videos (a taste of which can be seen here). Stay tuned to Following the Applause which will probably give a rundown of the trip at some point soon.
