The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 9th of December, 2010

The web site has a new look and feel again. Trying out different formats to see which suits best. Let me know if you have any problems with the way it is presented. Cheers.

There will be another jam session at Paddy Rice this Thursday (as mentioned in a previous post) and this week the hosting is being undertaken by Jet Odrerir. Always a great time and always different - so get down there.

There is a special event on this weekend at the Chinese House. The Svay Saw Band will team up with Haim Sovan and Mum Boutnarey to sing a series of great songs from Cambodian music's golden era. Haim Sovan is one of the few surviving musicians who sang and performed with Sinn Sisomouth back in the late 60s and early 70s. The picture below is a hit single they released when Ms. Haim was only 19 years old.

Haim Sovan has lost none of her great voice and stage presence and her combination with the passion, fun and expertise of the Mr. Svay Saw (74 years old) will ensure a great time at all. You will also be privileged to see and listen to Mr. Mum Boutnarey (or Mr. Ray for short) who, at 76 years old, still has that magical sparkle in his eye and portrays the spirit and passion of Cambodian music that the regime of the late 70s could never extinguish. Please be aware that this is a first-time and unique performance that is being put on by the Chinese House in collaboration with the Leng Pleng Web Site and as such promises to be a very special event that should not be missed.

If any of you were at the Cambodian Space Project's single launch in October then you would have been privileged to witness a preview of this music. Anybody that was there will tell you what a totally great time it was. We are hoping for something similar again this weekend.

On before this event will be an all day party at the Alley Cat as they celebrate their 5th anniversary - congratulations to Mark and Dallas. It should be totally cool and the Cambodian Space Project will feature with a special musical performance at the venue starting at 2:00PM. Another anniversary is happening that night at the Java Gallery which is celebrating 10 years in operation (fantastic and congratulations Dana) with pumping music from DJ Nam and DJ Radioactive Anne. There will be an open-mic on beforehand starting at 7:00PM hosted by Berkavitch. Friday also see's a totally new scene emerging in the Phnom Penh nightlife with DJ Dandanbeck and DJ Cyncity presenting Fruity 001 at Me Mate's Place - should be worth checking out.

Los Popork return to the Phnom Penh music scene again to treat us to another great gig at Equinox on Saturday night. That should be a blast, as will the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra and Wazobia Africana Group at the Chinese House on the same night. Totally great!

No excuses for staying indoors this weekend. Get out there and dance and party and have yourself a totally great time.

Here is this weeks gig guide.
