The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday 29th of April, 2010

Yo!

Don't forget that you can catch the Friendship Festival on this weekend in Siem Reap. It is being held at the Paradise Resort . You will not only get some great music and other festivities but you will also be supporting Phare Ponleu Selpak - the Battambang circus troupe.

Hellhounds on my trail!!! Yes, the The Hellhounds return to at Sharky Bar at 9:00PM tonight - and as the bands guitar player, Stevie "Sweet Licks" Goodman, puts it -The Hellhounds will be forced to recite their arrangements of various blues, oddball hillbilly and twisted country favorites with a nearly imbecile-like lack of showmanship or enthusiasm.

Good news too with the Chinese House back online with 2 performances this weekend. Patrick Mercier performs a night of Leonard Cohen songs. For those who have not had the pleasure of witnessing one of Patrick's performances previously, then I really recommend you get down there this Saturday night. Lost Highway will also make a debut at the venue on Sunday night.

You may have noticed an increase in activity for the Following the Applause . This is a result of contributions forwarded by other readers such as yourself. This is a blog moderated by Scott Bywater and covers any stories / news of live music gigs and how they went etc. - plus anything else you want to have published. Please feel free to forward Scoddy any write-ups / reviews of gigs using smbywaterTAKE IT OUTER HERE@yahoo.com

Three pieces of other interesting news from around the traps. Look out for a brand new jazz ensemble that includes the dulcet tones of Jimmy Baek on sax - I am sure this will be well worth tuning into.

There is also a new MetaHouse venue that will be opening soon, and, as some of you know, this will have include musical services and facilities as it is being run in collaboration with Anton Isselhardt of the Art Café. It seems there may be some sort of venue associated for live music performances. They are hoping to create a space to allow jazz musicians (and the likes) to gather and make music as they see fit - somewhat in the same vein as the famous Miles Bar did a few years back. More news on that later.

Lastly Dengue Fever is on the rise in Cambodia yet again - fortunately it is the type of fever that makes your feet shuffle and groove to that Khmer 60's rock and roll. Finalization of times, dates, venues and prices are all unknown 100% to me at this point. I do know they will do a benefit concert for Cambodian Living Arts  (possibly at Studio 182) and will conduct some sort of forum / discussion at the MetaHouse (may be) so as to talk about the state of Cambodian music past and present.

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday, 22nd of April, 2010

Hey Sport !

Things looking a little more happening after the new years break. The Cambodian Space Project start a new thing with their boutique acoustic sessions on tonight (Thursday) at La Croisette (They have a $2 Mojito special for the event also). Sharkys are back online with three bands over the next couple of weekends. The Velkommen Inn continue the live music this week is the debut of a brand new ensemble appropriately named the Bayon Blues (formerly known as The Sensational John Lee Hooker Band Without John).

Also there are three festival-type events happening this weekend and next. There are two in Phnom Penh this weekend and one in Siem Reap next weekend. The two in Phnom Penh are happening at different times - thus giving you a chance to catch both. The first is on Saturday morning when the NGO Mith Samlanh have their monthly Fun Fair. The fair will include performances by Army of Snipers and Skip Sutherland (as commented on in an earlier post) who will dust-off the vocal chords and guitar to perform for the first time since Radio City 30 years ago (a write-up of the original band can be seen here). The Fun Fair also constitutes a variety of other entertainment and fair for the kids and, of course, supports a very worthwhile organization.

The big festival in Phnom Penh this week is the event put on by KlapYaHandz. This is a significant event with the organization able to somehow garner the artistic forte of Pheap, Angry Woebot, and Felicia Cruz & Spills while they were passing by in a gig in Thailand. It will feature street art by Pheap and is a must for Hip Hop junkies.

Live music in Siem Reap is all part of the Friendship Festival 2010 on the 1st of May. It is featuring brand new names to this blog - including the Battambang Blue Grass Boys and Bass Steppaz and I am pretty sure the guys from Cambojam are in there somewhere too. Should be a total blast - please send any reports post-gig to Following the Applause if you are there.

      A request for resources

      Hello Leng Pleng

I'm putting together a band over the next month or so and I need two things:

      1) some kind of space for a series of rehearsals over a few weeks, evenings and/or weekends.  maybe an empty bar, maybe a large living room ... not too noisy and all my musicians are house-trained.

      2) a talented and imaginative graphic designer who can assist with a logo.  this is a paid gig, not a freebie.

anyone who can help drop me a line at smbywaterTAKETHISOUT@yahoo.com or drag me aside at the bar some time.

      cheers

      Scoddy

Early New Years Gig Guide - Tuesday 13th of April, 2010

      Hey,

As expected, not a lot on this week due to the Khmer New Year holidays. Hoping the gambit of the local authorities is all but disappeared since they should now have collected enough revenues for their holidays. Hopefully Sharky's and other venues will be back online next week.

It seems only the Riverhouse is the place to be over the new year break. They are featuring a New Years Eve party tonight plus two more shows over the coming days. If you are staying in town and looking for somewhere to dance then this is a good choice.

As mentioned in the post just prior to this one KlapYaHandz are staging a great all-day event at the Phnom Penh Night Market on Saturday the 24th of April, 2010. If you would like to perform at the event then please contact Andrew - andrew@klapyahandz.com

KlapYaHanz Event on the 24th of April, 2010

      Hey!

On April 24th, 2010 KlapYaHandz will be putting on a special event at the Phnom Penh Night Market featuring a number of local and international Cambodian acts. The event will feature street art by Peap (http://www.fatcap.com/article/peap.html) and musical performances by Angry Woebot and Spills Vs. FeleciaCruz . A profile of the event can be downloaded here (2MB).

KlapYaHandz are looking for musicians to play at the all-day event. They have no problem in accommodating local, expat, solo, bands etc. of mostly any kind - so if you would like to participate in a totally cooool and worthwhile event and need some exposure then contact Andrew using the following email andrew@klapyahandz.com. Please do it soon.

Couple of Links to Cambodian Space Project Videos

The Cambodian Space Project recent trip to Hong Kong not only included a number of gigs at some well known venues but also resulted in the production of a number of videos. They can be seen below:

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday 8th of April, 2010

Couldn't believe the bad luck with Lou Reed last week. There were some reports that he had been hit by an out-of-control SUV in Phnom Penh driven with impunity by some crazy UN person and another saying it was a mix-up with the airline. I also heard that it was something to do with a cruel April Fool's joke - but if that was the case it would only be funny to the person that started the rumor.

Finally some Siem Reap content in this weeks gig guide. Local Siem Reap expat band Cambojam will play two gigs at the well renowned Banana Leaf on Friday and the Brick House Bar in the Angkor Night markets on Saturday. If you are in Siem Reap then get down there (and then send a gig report to Following the Applause). You can check out some of their songs at http://www.ilike.com/artist/Cambojam

There are also 2 new venue editions to this weeks post. A new place called Paddy & Rice which apparently is "somewhere on the riverfront" is all I know. If anyone has more info then please post a COMMENT to this post. The Lazy Jazz Drunks will play there tonight. There is also a brand new club opening in the Attwood Centre on Pochentong Road. They are starting off with VDJ Tashi from Japan and then Ritchy & Phil tomorrow night.

The Chinese House also has something a bit different from us live music lovers with the Cambodia Living Arts Moahori Ensemble playing tonight and Cambodian band VOP tomorrow night. This is all part of a 3-day event staged in regard to the Khmer New Year break. Mohaori music is an old, traditional art form in Cambodia, and is often played at the beginning of Khmer New Year.

Anyway, here is this weeks guide

THIS BASTARD’S NOISE (TBN) RECORD LABEL’S PRESS RELEASE
      4 APRIL 2010

BUM N’ DRAZE RECRUITS GUITARIST JET ODRERIR (USA) TO FORM ARGUABLY THE FIRST ROCK’N ROLL SUPERGROUP IN POST-WAR CAMBODIA!

The Finnish-dominated Bum N’ Draze band’s latest long and winding search for a new guitarist is finally over. The longest serving, probably most theatrical original material-playing expat rock band in post-war Cambodia has suffered from changing guitarists during both their 2009 ‘Siberia Teaches’ and 2010 ‘Back To Abnormal’ tours.

“When James Phipek (USA) moved to Germany and his successor G-String Gildas (France) is now too busy with his other bands in Cambodia, a sustainable solution had to be found and fast”, tells Twilight Dzouns, BnD’s drummer, singer and lyricist, and continues that “I had seen Jet Odrerir play many times during past years on Phnom Penh stages with for example Betty Ford and The GT Falcons, and after a vital rock’n roll conversation on one fateful night at the Cantina’s bar counter I decided to invite him to a BnD audition. I thought, this tattooed dude from the hometown of Hüsker Dü, Minneapolis, who can debate with me forever about Jethro Tull’s best albums, cannot be thoroughly bad, heh… he is a brilliant solo guitarist and especially looks good on stage, that is what really counts in rock’n roll”!

BnD’s bassist and composer P. Sonic is equally happy about Jet’s entrance to the band. “Jet seems to be weird enough to fit into our band. Many have tried but most have failed in the end. You have to come from the shadows and have also something else than Siem Reap’s half-marathon behind”, smiles P. Sonic and orders another double Russian Standard vodka with Perrier and lime on TBN’s bill.

Supergroup or not, fans and supporters will judge soon, Jet will make his live debuts with Bum N’ Draze in April at Sharky and in May at Cantina in Phnom Penh, so stay tuned for the exact 2010 ‘Back To Abnormal’ tour dates and follow www.myspace.com/bumndraze for further developments!

      Rock on,
TBN – The Real and Independent Rock’n Roll Record Label

Live Music This Weekend - Thursday the 1st of April, 2010

Exclusive to the Leng Pleng Blog!  Phnom Penh will be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime event TONIGHT as Lou Reed makes an appearance at the Velkommen Inn on Street 104. He just got into Phnom Penh this morning and will make an acoustic set with Tree (Patrick Reed-Molsolf). Apparently he is Patrick's great-Uncle and is in Cambodia to see Angkor Wat and the surrounds! Don't miss it! Starts at 9:00PM

International live music returns to the FCC Phnom Penh again this week with P. Jae Stanley and Swackhammer. The band hails from Ho Chi Minh City but the lead-singer originates from Washington and cites influences by Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack and Dionne Warwick. A full write-up of the gig is available at the FCC web site here.

As mentioned in a previous email, the authorities have been stamping out what they consider to be loud music. There are several theories about what is behind the cloak the said authorities use to obscure their actions. I mentioned mine being the outrageously thumpingly loud disco music from the old T3 prison site. The expectation is that it won't last long.

Two good pieces of news is also conveyed. This Saturday will see the much anticipated return of D'Sco: The Geckos of Love. Dan & Scott from the Geckos crooned and swooned their way through many a classic jazz ballad in the last half-of last year. If you haven't seen them then I urge you get to the Chinese House this Saturday. Also - be sure that Pontoon is still open and will feature Tim Coats and 2 local DJs this Friday.

The Cambodian Space Project played their gigs in Hong Kong and by all accounts had a total blast! They played 3 gigs and shot some videos (a taste of which can be seen here). Stay tuned to Following the Applause which will probably give a rundown of the trip at some point soon.
