The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday the 24th of June, 2010

Hey,

Phnom Penh will add yet another new live performance venue this weekend when the brand new German Cambodian Cultural Center finally opens to the public. The new venue is supported by the German Goethe Institute, and is a consolidation of the “Art Plus” Foundation, the local NGO “Karuna” and the MetaHouse. There first event is on Friday and involves an art exhibition together with an ambiance created by DJ Dr. Wah Wah from Primitive Souls. On Saturday the first of the concerts presented through the ArtPlus foundation will feature Markus Gundermann on violin, Anton Isselhardt on flute and Steven Retallick on the violoncello. There will be a number of other new events and happenings coming up with this venue - so stay tuned. The new building is located at #37 Sothearos Street - south of Sihanouk Blvd.

Another feature for those of you who are more culturally inclined is next weeks jazz charity event put on my Studio 182 for the A NEW DAY CAMBODIA. This NGO helps support children at the rubbish dump and will be collecting money at the door. Studio 182 continues to bring high quality performers to Cambodia when next month they will introduce Jus' Cynthia - it is well worth catching this highly polished act.

Mith Samlanh (Friends) will also be having a huge event this weekend when they celebrate their 15th year anniversary of this very worthwhile organization. The Mayors of Simpleton and Los Poporks will feature as live music at the party and it will be followed up by DJ Frankie as he slides through his selection of digital tracks. It will be held at Romdeng Restaurant which is located at #74 Street 174 in Daun Penh. All proceeds from the event go to the support of vulnerable children and youth.

Also make sure you get down to Equinox this Saturday to catch Los Poporks as they inaugurate the brand new venue setup.

Note that the Curtis King Band gig slated for next weekend at Sharkys has been canceled with the only good news being that it has been rescheduled for later on in the year. Instead you can be treated so some outstanding classic rock & roll / blues from Kenny and the boys from Lost Highway on the 4th. They will be supported by Cambodia's irrefutably worst punk band- the Stiff Little Punks.

Please also note that I tend to get a lot of requests now from venues looking for live music bands nowadays. It would be most convenient if you could pass me the details of any acts you have in order for me to have information placed on our PERFORMERS page. If you have something you think it worthwhile presenting as an act then please forward me (as appropriate):

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday the 17th of June, 2010

    Hey,

The World Cup of Football sure has put a major dent in the live music scene - not too much on this week. Might also be associated with the departure of some northern-hemisphere musicians back to their native countries for their summer sojourns.

Anyway, the Bayon Blues are still playing and it will be tonight (Thursday) at 8:00PM. Note the early start time. Also note that this will be the last time you will be able to catch them before Little Duke heads back to Sweden for a few weeks.

Also, at the brand new Dream Up on this Friday is the debut of the acoustic duo Minstrel & Tree. I am highly recommending this gig for those who appreciate acoustic ballads presented with passion. This  American and Russian duo have exquisite vocals individually, and their combination in post-cold war Cambodia should make this an event not to miss. Dream Up is on Sothearos Blvd. about 300m south of Sihanouk Blvd. near to where the Winking Frog used to be.

Another great piece of news is the expansion of Equinox. The venue has now renovated and opened a huge new area at the back of the top floor - thus allowing room for a good place to perform. The space will be dedicated for live performances and will have a stage, a guitar amp, a bass amp, an electronic drum kit and a good (B52) sound system. The venue will debut with Los Poporks on Saturday the 26th of June. Should be huuuuge!

The Cambodian Space Project will play again at La Croisette next Wednesday - one of the band's classic venues for previous gigs. It is framed by two world cup games - the first being England V Slovenia, so might be a good place to watch the game, have dinner and catch some Khmer 60's rock & roll vibe for the rest of the night.

The first week of next month is shaping up to be a weekend of international music with the return of the Curtis King Band from Vietnam as well as Warapo all the way from Cuba and playing at the FCC Phnom Penh. Curtis and the boys always put on a great show when they are in town. They will perform at Sharky Bar for American independence day.

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday the 10th of June, 2010

    Hi,

Everything is happening on Saturday this week with 7 different acts on that night. It was only 3 gig-guides ago that nearly everything was on a Friday. I guess things will change with the availability of bands and with the season.

My apologies for the erroneous info in regard to double-header - being the Java and Mekong Pirates gig and the Fête de la Musique with CCF. As Dominique pointed out, it is actually happening on Wednesday the 16th of June (oops).

There is another double-header occurring this Friday at Sharky Bar with both the Stiff Little Punks and Lost Highway playing. Lost Highway are really hitting it off at a lot of places now - they will also play for the train ride party offered by the Chinese House this Sunday.

Several gigs are being associated with the World Cup of Football - this includes the gigs at The Cavern and Pontoon. Should be a great month of football and music - no doubt. The Bayon Blues will be back at The Gym after the football hiatus but in the mean time will play at a brand new place for the music scene. This is at The Lazy Gecko, which is in the lakeside area (take the first left after the Phnom Penh Hotel on Monivong) and will happen on this Saturday night.

If you are heading down south then don't forget Los Popork's gig in Kampot over this weekend - it will be a totally fun and cool way to chill-out for the weekend.

Also, don't forget internationally renowned Hip-Hop exponents this Saturday at the Chenla Theatre for the . Phnom Penh Hip-Hop Festival II. It will feature Wanted Posse from France. Also, Hip-Hop enthusiats should not miss the KlapYaHandz event this Friday that will feature a "big music, art and dance night" at the NEW MetaHouse (German Cultural center - now loacted on Sothearos Blvd., south of Sihanouk Blvd.). - it should be HUGE!

The BIG news this week is the launch of the brand new Dream Up Restaurant and Bar this Saturday night. It will feature the band Shangri-la which will play a great array of acoustic Blues & Jazz and feature a Russian repertoire.

      Hey,

The weekend may start tonight for some - especially with the World Cup of Football starting this Friday night. Anyway, just as a reminder - the Bayon Blues will play at The Gym (details here) - so it's all coool.

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday the 3rd of June, 2010

      Howdy,

The BIG event on this week is the party at the Phnom Penh railway station as organized through the Chinese House. It will feature a train ride to a secret location where the Phnom Penh Hot String Jazz Club will perform for the lucky 100 people who got in and purchased tickets early. Sorry, I have been reliably informed that all tickets have been sold out for that gig - but............... no worries - you can still join the party afterward at the Phnom Penh railway station. This will be a huge party and will feature the totally danceable, Khmer 60's rock & roll exponents the Cambodian Space Project (from 9:30PM to 11:00PM) followed by a DJ dance party featuring Dr. House and DJ Marine.

If you looking for something just as danceable but more on the Latin side of the music stream then head to the FCC Phnom Penh. Bad Neighbors are back - and this time they are performing a Sunday gig also - so keep your feet moving until the very end of the weekend.

Yet another new line-up will hit the traps on Saturday night at The Cavern. This is BluesBerry Jam and will feature members from some of Phnom Penh's most prominent bands. It is being billed as an "eccentric eclectic collaboration" and will be a great place for a beer on Street 104 on a Saturday night.

As mentioned in last weeks guide, there is also a new jazz formation in town - the group is made up of some of Phnom Penh's premier jazz musicians - they are known as the Eastern Jazz Brigade. I believe they will be playing only this one gig before an extended summer break - I urge you to get down there if you don't want to wait. They play at a new music venue called Le Jardin this Friday. The Hellhounds will also be taking an extended summer break after their gig at Sharkys tonight - so get down there.

Other big news to keep in mind is the gig by Los Poporks next weekend in Kampot. It will be live at the Bodhi Tree. The Bodhi Tree is located right on the Kampot river (on the other side of the river from town) and is a totally excellent place to chill. The fact that Los Poporks are there next Saturday makes all the more reason to make the trek next weekend.

Some will remember the huge gigs made by the Happy Lucky Love You Long Time Band that played around Phnom Penh back in 2007/2006. They were a total blast and the brain-child of band leader Davis Zunk. Davis has now made the recordings from his original band - the Adult Toys - available via the internet. They can be accessed by the URL http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/AdultToys

Also, for all those people who were lucky enough to see the Rise Up ! performance by some of Cambodia's best, newest and premier Hip-Hop performers then an exhibition will be on at new German Cultural Center. The event will feature music video clips, prints, CDs and other merchandise all associated with the event - more details are available by clicking here
