The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday the 29th of July, 2010

PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Bona Thiem cuts out a classic rock & roll song at a recent gig at the Memphis Pub. The venue will be hosting a special Cambodian Rock Night this Saturday that will present a range of songs from the golden era in Cambodian rock history -  including songs from Pen Ron, Ros Sereysothea, and Sin Sisomouth. Expect a long list of special guests as well as a great array of lucky draw prizes.

Hey,

The Cambodian Space Project will perform their very last gig before heading to France. The gig will happen at Equinox on this Saturday the 31st of July, 2010 starting at 7:30PM. Note the early start time there. Hopefully some of the members will be heading over to Memphis Pub after their gig. If you will be in France for any part of August then please feel free to contact the band as they would be more than happy to catch up with everybody while they are there.

For the more culturally inclined, the Cambodian Youth Arts Festival presented by Cambodian Living Arts will be starting next week on the 7th of August, 2010 at the Chaktomouk Theatre. It will include a number of exhibitions, performances, ceremonies and screenings by local artists and visitors. More details of the event can be found here. There is a benefit concert for the festival happening this coing Tuesday at the CJCC that is featuring two international performers from prior CLA productions - being Diane Phelan and Marc de la Cruz.

For the less culturally inclined (or for those who prefer culture are a much more obtuse angle) there is Cambodia's worst punk band playing again at Sharky's this Friday in the form of the Stiff Little Punks. They will be joined by new band to hit the scene - the Teener Turners - who play Indie covers and start at about 9:00PM. The Stiff Little Punks will be on at around 10:00PM.

A brand new combination is also going to hit the Phnom Penh streets this Saturday at Paddy Rice. Known as Those Guys they play a series of classic rock & roll & Blues. They represent the first of a series of bands playing at Paddy Rice as this venue revs up the live music scene on the riverfront. Over the next three weeks Paddy Rice will feature 3 great acts - including another performance from the elusive and beautiful, rock & roll Apsara, Melanie.

The gig for the Phnom Penh Hot Strings Jazz Club at the new MetaHouse that I mentioned last week is definitely on this week. The Sunday session will probably turn into a regular Sunday evening jam session - so all musicians are invited to get down to support it.

If you are in the beautiful, serene city of Siem Reap then you can catch the CamboJam at the Banana Leaf on Friday night. Cool!

Here's this weeks guide.

The lovely Srey Thy  from the Cambodian Space Project and Expresso Thmei will perform this Friday at the brand new Dream Up bar. There will be 3 bands, Russian food and a truely ecelectic experience.

Hey,

Still in the slow season but still good stuff to see around the traps this weekend. Nearly all local bands familiar to this blog will have members missing over July and August.

The Bayon Blues will make a series of gigs over the next few weeks starting with a Blues/Rock Party at the Dream Up bar this Friday. The party will also feature Minstrel and possibly members of the Shangri La band as well as some members of the Cambodian Space Project. The Dream Up bar is also hosting the Bluesberry Jam again this Saturday - and according to all reports was a full house and a totally great time last week - so see you there this week

Tree  at Paddy Rice on the riverfront and the Lazy Jazz Drunks on at Sharky Bar on Friday nights rounds off this weeks gig guide.

Hey,

It is nearly the weekend so the Leng Pleng web site is here again to bring you the latest in live music news straight to your desktop.

The Cambodian Space Project will be at the brand new MetaHouse on Friday this week. There may be a few sound issues to sort-out at the new venue before the gig but that won't stop them as they blast another couple of sets of psychedelic Khmer rock & roll. The new MetaHouse is located on Sisowath Quay about 300m south of Sihanouk Blvd. Next weekend the band heads to Battambang for a couple of days - anyone wishing to join the band for the trip is more than welcome (see the Performers page for contact details).

The gigs keep rolling in for the Phnom Penh Hot Strings Jazz Club as they feature at next weeks Belgian Festival on Wednesday at La Patate. It is located on a quaint road, (Street 5) nestled between Sisowath Quay and Street 13. If there is a crowd then expect the party to spill out onto the street - could be huuuge! The band will also inaugurate the new MetaHouse next weekend with a show billed as a "Green Night, Jazz and Poetry" !

The Dream Up Bar keeps on cookin' with a great array of live music - this week featuring "lip-smakin' good entertainment" from the original Bluesberry Jam. They start at 8:00PM together with a special BBQ and  music from Minstrel. The following weekend the Dream Up Bar is looking at getting a collection of bands together in order to throw a huge music night - stay tuned for more details.

It will be your last chance to catch the original line-up of Keltica this Friday at Paddy Rice. The lead singer, Fearghal, will be heading back to Ireland. So if you want to hear the best, authentic celtic music in town then get down there.

A photo of the legendary Leonard Cohen. He will play in Phnom Penh on Saturday, the 27th of November, 2010 indoors at the Olympic Stadium. Note the NEW time for online tickets sales being 9:00AM GMT (4:00PM local time) this Saturday the 10th of July, 2010. Click here for more details or click here to buy a ticket.

Hey,

International music hits the Chinese House this week as Doc Span joins together with the Phnom Penh Hot Strings Jazz Club. Doc is an American expat living in Australia and is a superb exponent of the blues-jazz harmonica.  You can see his story and listen to some of his music by going to http://www.docspan.net/. His combination with the Phnom Penh Hot Strings Jazz Club should prove to be an event not to miss.

The Shanghai bar is back into hosting live music again this week  with the Stiff Little Punks playing this Saturday night. The gig is sponsored by EzeCom.

Also, there is the Cambodian Space Project who will play at Le Lotus Blanc this Friday and will feature founding member Davis Zunk on drums. This will be a once-off opporunity to be able to catch Davis as he is in town for one week only. The band will be preceeded by another ensemble that features members of Los Popork - the exact make-up of this performance is unknown to me at this time. The performance starts at 8:00PM.

The Cambodian Space Project will also play this Sunday at La Croisette as a lead-up to the World Cup of Football final. Note the late start time for this gig being 10:00PM. This will be on of the last times you will be able to catch them before the members head of the France.

All are invited to a farewell party at Equinox this Saturday also. It is somewhat akin to a jam session and all musicians are welcome to get down there and get up on stage.

Gig Guide of Cambodia - Thursday 1st of July, 2010

Hey,

Photo of the Week
Kenny from Lost Highway performs at Sharkys at a recent gig.

The band will perform again this Sunday at Sharkys for the special 4th of July Party. They will be ably supported by the Stiff Little Punks.

Welcome to the new look and feel of the Leng Pleng weekly gig guide. Since it seems to be becoming a regular thing I thought I had better professionalize-it-up a little bit. The space for advertisers might be a bit of a shock - I hope you don't mind. It does take a significant chunk of time every week, so in order to sustain it I am aiming to garner some support from local venues(or others) who would like to advertise.

Part of the new design is the Photo of the Week - which can be seen above. This weeks shot comes from Steve Goodman - probably the Kingdom's most renowned rock & roll photographer. Steve is currently running a SPECIAL OFFER (of which I urge you to take advantage) where he will create a portrait of any local band or solo performer for FREE. These are not performance shots, but off-stage portraits. Steve is not only uniquely adept at capturing the passion, energy and feel on and around the live music stage - he also manages to encapsulate Cambodia, it's people and the lives that they lead. You can see his full portfolio and get his contact details at http://www.stevegoodman.com/.

It seems a Battle of the Bands competition is in the wind - you can almost smell the sweat on rusty guitar strings. Also coming in next 4 months is the Wave Dance Music Festival (and its associated pre-festival parties) - it should be HUGE! Keep tuned for more details over the ensuing weeks.

The Chinese House will also be taking their summer sojourn soon, but before they do they are going to treat us with a local performer that is brand new to Leng Plang . It is a young, acoustic guitar player who goes by the name of Sai. He is billed as performing "his own melodic and catchy tunes, some Khmer classics and a few international hit". He will also be joined by other accomplished local artists so it should be a great event. It happens this Saturday.

This is not the only significant event on Saturday. At Studio 182 you will have the opportunity to witness a rare combination as Michelle Manzo and Jus'Cynthia play together with the boys from Studio 182. This may be the only time you will be able to dance to this combination because it is occur only whilst the venue is in a transition phase between the two accomplished jazz vocalists.

Saturday also brings Warapo to the FCC Phnom Penh stage. They have arrived all the way from Cuba and will be a night of total energy and dance. Also fronted by two gorgeous ladies, it is going to be a hard choice for us gentlemen to know exactly which gig to check out first. Luckily Warapo are doing two gigs for the weekend and will follow-up with another gig on the Sunday which starts at 6:00PM.

The Memphis Pub also has a special event on this weekend with it's 6th Birthday Bash. Memphis is one of Phnom Penh's most popular rock & roll venues, I am sure the place is going to be absolutely packed, pumpin' and a totally great time.

You might also want to head down to Rubies on Friday night as DJ Clockwork Soul plays his Soul, Motown  & Rare Groove. Always away from the mainstream, this DJ will always make sure you totally enjoy your night and the company you keep.
