The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 30th of September, 2010

Hey,

The open-mic continues tonight and now every Thursday at Paddy Rice with the Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam sessions. All musicians are welcome to play as the venue makes available a full drum-kit, 2 mics and a PA with fold-back.

Friday sees the return of Tree at the Velkommen Inn - a great place for an after work beer with good food and a blend of folk, pop and rock songs, with an emphasis on melodic songs. Later the same night sees the return of the Lazy Jazz Drunks at Sharkys. There is a possibility that this gig will be preceded by a set by one of two preeminent Khmer rock bands - either Cartoon Emo or Pilgrim. These bands will be worth catching as they are the first known (to this blog at least) foray by Khmer rock bands into the sphere of original material and true rock & roll. They will be worth catching (if their management get their ass into gear).

The Bayon Blues will also be playing this Friday night at Equinox. This will be the bands debut at this venue and it should really be one of the best gigs of the night. Their coverage of old-style, classic blues from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s is one of the most professional in the country. The band is also embarking on a fully-electrified foray into true Chicago-style blues.

The big gig for Saturday will be the induction of another new combination into the Phnom Penh music scene called The Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra. The band consists of 12 musicians playing Eastern-European, Arabian, Jewish, Middle and North-American traditional music. There should be a lot of dancing to be had and should definitely be worth catching. They will play at the Chinese House starting at around 8:00PM. Saturday night also sees the Wonders Band elucidating the best afro-reggae beat in town.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 23rd of September, 2010

The gigs keep coming your way again this week - with 16 gigs over the next 7 days. This is mostly due to the International Music Festival which return again this year thanks to the Art+ Foundation. The program for the series of seven concerts can be seen here.

I won't bore you with my blurb too much this week - mainly because I am snowed under with work - and also partly for the fact that you can see the gigs that are coming up below. Suffice to say that the big gigs this week are the Stiff Little Punks on Friday at Candy Bar when they will be joined by the brother - yes that's right, the legendary brother - of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook.

Also, on Saturday Los Poporks will play at Equinox - that will be a totally pumpin' gig no doubt. The Cambodian Space Project will also play Saturday night at Paddy Rice but if you can't catch that gig then may be you can join them on the "space bus" to the village of their drummer Bong Sak in Kampong Speu. If you wish to go then meet the bus that will leave at 10:00AM on Sunday morning in front of La Croisette. The $10 ticket will include transport there and back, lunch and the show. BYO refreshements.

Rock the Cambodian Countryside on September 25th

Hey,

The Cambodian Space Project will be heading about 40km out of town for a concert at the village of their drummer, Bong Sak (whose other job is castrating water buffalo), on the 26th of September. The band has done this before and it is always a great time - not only in terms of the music but also getting to meet real Cambodian people and mixing with them on a totally musical level. The band is hiring a 45-seater "space bus" for the journey and the $10 tickets will include all the transportation and lunch as well as the CSP live show at the venue.

All and sundry are more than welcome to get on the bus and cruise to the countryside for the day. To book for the bus just let them know by filling in the form at the link here:

Cheers

Latest Gig Guide

The summer hiatus is well and truly over because there are over 8 acts on the Friday alone!!! This includes the Bayon Blues who are making a welcomed return to the Chinese House and, significantly, the début performance of Cartoon Emo – a young Khmer band playing original Indie rock at the MetaHouse. This Saturday includes the Cambodian Space Project at Equinox, Lost Highway at Sharkys and Kheltica at the FCC Phnom Penh. Also note that the Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam at Paddy Rice is now on EVERY Thursday night and consequently will be on tonight.

Of special note this week is the Phnom Penh Acoustic Sessions that began last night at Setsara. Setsara is a Thai restaurant right next door to Equinox and boasts a spacious and comfortable eating area that borders the bustling street-life of Street 278. Every Wednesday for the next month (at least) Setsara will clear a space to allow Phnom Penh's best resident musicians to perform. The idea is to create a space that will facilitate the creation of music from a wide variety of musical tastes on whatever acoustic instruments a performer wishes to engage. The important word here being acoustic.

The current host of the sessions is Julien Poulson. Julien has many musical credits in his portfolio, the latest being a successful tour of France with the band he founded - the Cambodian Space Project. Julien, himself an accomplished musician on several acoustic instruments, hopes to attract  many local artists to the open-mic over the next four weeks. This will most likely include some of Cambodia's pre-eminent acoustic instrument players and, as such, will ensure a good mix of style and culture. Last night's session included a great line-up of musicians – including performances from members of the Cambodian Space Project, TJ, Ian White,  and Dan Ögren.

All musicians are encouraged to come down to play and listen. Absolutely any musical style is welcome as well as any acoustic musical instruments. The acoustic sessions will be on again next Wednesday the 22nd of September, 2010. The music will start right on 8:00PM and is augmented by a Thai buffet served from 7:00PM for $5.00.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 9th of September, 2010

Hey,

A packed edition. No wonder - with all the musicians returning to the land of wrong-way-drivers and, as a consequence, there being over 28 gigs slated for the next month or so.

My sincere apologies for my  terrible spelling and grammar in this weekly newsletter. I really try - I promise - it is like my brain takes on a whole new mistake-recognition-system AFTER I click the send button. I am trying to evolve. Thanks to Matt Bolton for helping me out with this edition.

Thursday the 9th of September, 2010

The Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam is on again tonight at Paddy Rice. It is turning in to a popular and truly great time every 2 weeks with an 'eclectic' mix of music and musicians from all around. It is a great way to start your live music weekend so get down there early.

Also, tonight there will be the debut performance of one of the capital's two new bands - the Cambodian Cowboys. They will play a collection of songs that are on the more sophisticated side of rhythm and blues, along with a mix of swing and soul. It will also mark the much anticipated re-opening of the Chinese House which has been offline during the summer sojourn.

Friday the 10th of September, 2010

The Chinese House also marks their return  with the ever-popular, classic guitar riffs of Lost Highway playing on Friday. Cool!

Friday also sees the re-emergence of the Eastern Jazz Club as the band debuts at Equinox. This line-up features some of the capitals best horn players. The band presents a laid-back music session and, as such, it is a great chance to sip on an exotic cocktail and soak up the technical expertise of these accomplished players. The Paddy Rice house band Holiday in Cambodia will feature on the river front on Friday night also.

Lovers of Khmer 60s rock can catch Srey Thy and Scoddy as Expresso Thmei play at PSE on Friday. This will a  great boutique version of this pair's other band. You will need to book with the venue to make use of the all-inclusive food-drinks-music for $15.00.

Classical music is on offer this Friday at MetaHouse with Trio Concertante as Anton Isselhardt and his students present works by Joseph Haydn and his famous pupil Igance Pleyel (1757-1831).

Saturday the 11th of September, 2010

On Saturday, the second of the capital's new bands debuts at the Do It All Club on Street 174. It will feature a 7-member band playing African music (sorry - the name is unknown to me at this point) and should be a great new addition to the Phnom Penh live music scene.

Saturday will also see the official return gig of the Cambodian Space Project. It will occur at Maxines (Snow's Bar across the river) starting at around 6:00PM+. Note the early start which is set to coincide with the sunset. Also note that Maxine's is a limited access venue and, as such, will only accommodate a maximum of about 70 people. You may need to get there early if you want to make sure that you will catch the show.

Saturday night also sees the FCC mix it up with some classic blues-rock as they present the venue's debut of Lost Highway.

 Coming Up

Lots of stuff coming up too as several bands return to the live music scene. The Bayon Blues will be back - playing 3 gigs over 3 weeks at Chinese House, Equinox and the Phnom Penh Swings Boat Party. This band is looking to get together a new electrified version of their line-up - so stayed tuned for more news on that.

Another piece of good news is that Los Poporks will return to Equinox. Anybody at their last gig at this venue are sure to return and bring friends because it was such a blast last time. This should be one not to miss.

Also on the agenda is the 7th International Music Festival. This event is organized by the Art+ foundation and spans several days at various venues. International music will again feature at the Sunway Hotel's Oktoberfest with a band from Germany called the Bayern-Land Echo. Oktoberfest at this venue is a classic annual event. Also, there will be a triple-bill down in Sihanoukville occurring some time over the next few weeks. More details on that later.

There is also word of another open-mic night that will begin at the Java Cafe next week. It will occur once a month and is slated as a night of "poetry, music and comedy featuring local and international acts". The set-up will be more for acoustic ensembles rather than full-on bands.

Extra Stuff

Please don't forget that if you go to any of the gigs and feel inspired to do a write-up - be it just 1 paragraph or even a couple of sentences then you will be able to get the published by sending them to Scoddy at Following the Applause

That's it for now. Here's this weeks gig-guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 2nd of September, 2010

Hey,

A bit light on this week for the live music scene, but the ectro-groove picks up where that drops out. The highlight being the 4 DJs playing both Friday and Saturday at Pontoon. Totally cool!

The Teaner Terners and the Lazy Jazz Drunks keep things happening though - this week the bands play a double-header at Sharkys. As disseminated in an earlier post - don't forget to get involved in their video production if you are coming down.

Classic Rock will be performed by Rock Xpress at the Memphis Pub this Saturday when Bona and the boys play a selection from Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Eric Clapton and much more. Truly one of Phnom Penhs best and most consistent venues with some of the best performances you can get in live music here - well worth catching it.

For the more classically inclined, there is the Sunday evening performances put on by the Art+ Foundation at MetaHouse. They will be performing masterpieces by J.S. Bach and contemporaries.

There will be live music a-plenty coming up  as well with the Cambodian Space Project  returning to Phnom Penh after a great tour of France. They played to a rousing reception by a packed audience at their last gig in Paris and are already in the throws of organizing a return tour next year. This will be after their trips to Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia. Cool! The band is also looking at a series of live gigs over the next couple of months in Phnom Penh - including the launch of the 7" vinyl single. The band will be playing at a bar opposite La Patate 1 on Street 5 - sorry the name eludes me this Friday followed in subsequent weeks by gigs at Le Lotus Blanc, Maxines (Snowy's Bar), the Alley Cat, Equinox and several others. Also, look for the band along the riverfront on occassions as they bring out their battery powered amps across the street from La Croisette. The band will also be working on the release of their first album - due out in November.

Also on the cards will be the return of the hugely popular Mekong Pirates. This band will be in the studio this month and next also, recording their first album. That will be a much anticipated release. How the Phnom Penh live music scene has developed over the past 18 months.

There is a new band set to emerge also. Known as Cartoon Emo they play a collection of their own material - thrash / Indie rock and consist of entirely of young Cambodian blokes. Great to see this sort of stuff emerging - creative stuff from  Cambodian youth, and moving away from the sugary, poppy, love-song crap. This,  combined with the great work of KlapYaHandz and Tiny Toones, means the live music scene over the next few years is looking a lot more creative and inspiring.

There is something slightly more than a rumor that says there may be 1 or 2 music festivals happening this year around the middle to the end of October and also November. Keep tuned for more details.

Here's this weeks gig guide.
