The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Friday the 29th of October, 2010

Hey,

A bit late with the gig guide this week. Hope those of you in the know caught the Bayon Blues at the Chinese House or Balgass at Equinox last night. If not then the Bayon Blues will be at Maxines (Snow's Bar) next Sunday and Balgass are on again tonight at Equinox together with Patrick Mercier as part of their French Week music ensemble.

There are Halloween gigs and parties a-plenty this week. Not the least of which is at Paddy Rice on both Saturday and Sunday with Kheltica and Balgass respectively. The gigs will feature an "interactive devil" for the first time in Cambodia. I will be sending out a special *feature* email this afternoon with more detail on these gigs.

On Saturday I totally urge connoisseurs of Americana blues / rock / country to get down and catch Lost Highway at Sharky Bar. The current line-up with both Kenny and Chris Kebeck on guitar is just such a total treat for us here in Phnom Penh. For those who are inspired by this genre then this gig is a total must. The enjoyment, energy and expertise between these two guitarists is something that inspires your heart to start pumpin' and your feet to start movin'. (NOTE: watch out (!) as the Hash House Harriers are in town for this gig too ;)) Another totally great gig will happen at the same venue on Sunday as the immimicable Bum 'N Draze present their Halloween show. Should be great. Notably they will be supported by the debut gig of another of Cambodia's premier rock & roll bands - Pilgrim.

A HUGE gig and party will welcome in Karen's birthday this Saturday night at Equinox. This gig includes...........wait for it............. an open bar! So it's going to be packed - not only with a lot of partying people but also with great music from the Teaner Terners and the Cambodian Space Project (who, as rumour would have it, are at this moment planning to include a Cambodian Punk song that will be worse than the Stiff Little Punks).

Also, don't forget next week that the Acoustic Sessions continue with Scott Bywater at the helm. It is an open-mic with a great arrangement and environment for all musicians to get up and do their thing.

Stayed tuned for next week with news about a brand new line-up to hit the bars of Phnom Penh - a tribute band to the classic Rolling Stones album - Exile on Mainstreet.

Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 21st of October, 2010

Hey,

Plenty of stuff on again this week as we start to (rock & ) roll out of the Silly season and into the milder, holiday, high-season months - cool!

The big event this week is the launch of the Cambodian Space Project's single at the Chinese House on Saturday at 7:00PM. It will be the first 45RPM single to be released in Cambodia since 1975. The event is being supported by the Leng Pleng web site and, as such, we are inviting musicians, artists and all Khmer 60s rock & roll enthusiasts to join a special pre-performance  party at the venue starting at 6:00PM. Please feel welcome to join if you feel so inclined. Please be aware that there is a $2 cover charge.

This will most definitely be a auspicious event and will include special performances by Hem Sovann (who sang and released a single with Sin Sisomouth at the age of 18) plus Mr. Svay Saw and Mr. Ray (both keyboard players and song-writers for Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Sin Sisomouth). There will be several other former songwriters and musicians who performed with the stars of Cambodian rock & roll's golden era of the 1960s and 70s.

In a recent interview conducted by Leng Pleng Mr. Svay Saw recalled how all the musicians at that time felt so good together. There was a wide range of good experience among the musicians and the level of technical expertise was very high. They felt that there was a special feeling among the musicians and it was acting as a basis for Cambodian music to flourish and grow. As such, the older and more experienced musicians regularly invited younger musicians to come and play. Mr Svay Saw was one of these lucky younger musicians to be able to have this opportunity. He regularly played with Sin Sisomouth and Ros Sereysothea at a place called the Bar Mekong (which is still open in Phnom Penh today). He fondly recalls how Ros Sereysothea would often come to bite him on the shoulder as a sign of friendly, joking affection.

In reference to today's music, Mr. Svay Saw believes the Khmer rock & roll from the 60s and 70s still has a lot to offer. Today he uses his own time and money to teach young Cambodians to music of the golden era to ensure that the feeling and power of his generation is not lost. He feels that it is important that young Cambodians become exposed to a wide variety of music and are able to play internationally with musicians from other countries. The full interview can be downloaded here (26MB).

There will also be a very special performance by Arn Chorn Pond (founder of Cambodian Living Arts and the subject of the documentary The Flute Player). This will be followed by the presentation of one of the last songs performed and recorded by Pan Ron, Ros Seryeysothea and Ho Meas and will be jointly performed by Ouch Savy, Srey Thy and Srey Ma. We will also be graced by the presence of the sister and former-manager of Ros SereysotheaPrince Sisowath (Khmer rock & roll historian and actor) will also probably be there as well as many other people in the media, music and arts field in Cambodia

Basically a stage is being set to allow a great mix of musicians get up and celebrate the golden vinyl era of Cambodian music. It will be the first time some of these musicians have been together since the 1970s. Please understand that these performances will start at 7:00PM sharp.

Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 14th of October, 2010

Hey,

Live gigs a-plenty again this week with no less than 16 performances over the next 7 days. Cool!

The open-mic sessions have really caught on now with spaces for musicians to get up and play as they like at 4 regular venues now. This includes Acoustic Sessions at Setsara on Wednesdays, the grungy, cool, effervescent mix at Paddy Rice on Thursdays, the open-comedy, art-based mix at Java happening monthly on Wednesdays and the brand new Jazz Jam Sessions that (I am reliably told) will happen every 3rd Saturday at MetaHouse. All fours open-mic sessions take on a totally different mix, thus allowing you to find the space you feel comfortable with and also to go to just listen when you feel like that is more your thing.

From all reports the Green Mist gig at Equinox last weekend was sensational - for those of you who missed it then you can catch them again this weekend - be sure to notice the change in date and time for this one - now happening on Friday.

The Mekong Pirates are back again this weekend at the Chinese House. That will no doubt be a packed house yet again. This same venue will be the location of a very special event the following weekend with the release of the first 7" single in Cambodia for 35 years by the Cambodian Space Project. The gig will include special appearances by some of the former performers and songwriters for Sin Sisomouth, Pan Ron, and Ros Seryeysothea. It will also include a special performance that will involve Ouch Savy, Srey Thy and Srey Ma who will jointly perform a classic song from the golden era that was originally performed by Pan Ron, Ros Seryeysothea and Ho Meas. Plus more -  [MORE INFO].

There are lots more huge events coming up too. So stay tuned.

Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Wednesday the 6th of October, 2010

Hey,

Those of you wanting the full complement of live music for the coming days will have to wait until next week as the PChum Ben holiday has engineered sober weekend. So you might have to get down to the open-mic jam sessions on at Setsara and Paddy Rice to really get your fill. This is not to say there are no great gigs on.

One of the best gigs for the week will be the introduction to Phnom Penh of The Green Mist on this Saturday at Equinox. The band is a concoction by a musician familiar to many of you, Julien Poulson (on guitar & vocals), and has involved many other musicians in the past, most notably Brian Ritchie and Charlie Owens. The make-up of the band for this Phnom Penh gig will introduce the totally cool, steady and driving beats of Stuart Robertson on drums. The full story of the band can be seen at http://www.myspace.com/themysteriousgreenmist. The band also plays the same venue the following weekend.

A totally not-to-be-missed session will occur just after PChum Ben on Tuesday next week at the Chinese House. This is a special gig will present the fusion of the musical talents of Norwegian composer Ingolv Haaland together with Khmer singer and chapei player Srey Ouch Savy and Tro Sao player Yun Theara. The style of the music is calm, quiet and ambient with a hint of lounge-style - good for a Tuesday night after the holidays ;o). More information is available at http://www.ingolvhaaland.com .

The coming weeks will see the re-emergence of the full-flavored live music scene. It includes the introduction of a further regular jam session that will occur at the MetaHouse every second Saturday. It will be hosted by Mathius Wagner (e-violin), Dan Ögren (bass), and Giacomo (Accordion) and will also be an open-mic arrangement. These sessions are trying to re-establish the jazz groove generated by the players that used to frequent Miles back a few years ago. All musicians will be more than welcome to join.

That's it for now. Please make sure to enjoy the holiday break and remember - be careful on the roads. Here's this weeks gig guide:
