The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 3rd of February, 2011

Hey,

Bucket loads of videos emanating from across the web in the direction of Sharkys Penhstock II festival last weekend. The pick of the bunch in my opinion has to be Devo's Mongoloid as performed by The Stiff Little Punks (click the image below). The performance from the
band totally picked the energy up and set the tempo for the rest of the weekend. A stack more videos from the weekend are available at the URL http://www.youtube.com/user/SharkyBarBoss and are provided by the boys from Sharkys. Photos also abound from the three day festival and I have have scattered a few throughout this weeks blurb.

If you are a user of Facebook you can now also pick up Leng Pleng updates and additions as they come to hand throughout the week. In order to do this go to the URL
http://www.facebook.com/LengPleng and click on the LIKE button. You will then see status updates on your wall as we post them. You can also post comments  and abuse us across the page also. Please help us by spreading the word to other punters , publicans and musicians.

One not to miss this weekend will be the inagural Kep Beach Festival. The line-up promises a totally cool time as the grandfather of Khmer music, the Ray Charles of Cambodia, Kong Nai and his son Kong Boran performs at sunset on the beach in Kep.

This will be preceded, and followed, by line-up of local and international DJs, including:
DJ Antaro, DJ Hoxup, and DJ Ste. There will also be a dance performance by the Khmer Cultural Development organization featuring 30 children from Kampot plus a special performance by the sensationally cool professors of Khmer thrash rock Cartoon Emo. Also look out for a totally danceable repetoire outlayed by  Professor Kinski & MC Curly at around 9:30PM. Cool!

I believe, as many others do, that 2010 will go down as an auspicious year for the local/expat music scene in Cambodia because there has been such a huge expansion and diversification in all aspects.  One of the most important aspects is the fact that a large number of the bands are performing original material.

The year saw the emergence of the Khmer 60's space rock outfit the Cambodian Space Project plus a number of indie-thrash-punk rock bands in the form of the Teaner Terners, Bum N Draze, Cartoon Emo the Stiff Little Punks, and The Choppers. There has also been huge emergence of the local-international hip-hop, electonic music scene from people such as Tiny Toones,  Professor Kinski & MC Curly and Klapyahandz. Combine that with the reggae-funk-French influence of Los Poppork and the Mekong Pirates and you can see that there is a great basis to conclude that there is something very special about what is happening here.

This is also evidenced by the fact that within the next few months the local music scene will see the release of no less than 5 new albums from local bands. These being from bands such as Tiny Toones, the Teaner Terners, the Cambodian Space Project, and Professor Kinski & MC Curly - all of which will add to the songs already released by Bum N' Draze (who are entering their 8th year and take the mantel as the Kingdoms longest running original expat band).
The first of these album releases will occur at MetaHouse this Saturday at 8:00PM. It will be the album Generation Z by Tiny Toones. It should be a great party as the new album will be performed plus there will be new video clips, T-shirts and auctions, as well as (of course) your chance to be one of the first to pick up an authentic master copy of the new album.

For this weeks download I will point you in the direction of another great local ensemble? These are some of the songs from  Soren Borch & the Dudley Do-Rights and they can be listened to here: http://sites.google.com/site/thedudleydorights/home/free-mp3s . Enjoy them as you type ;o) !
