The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 21st of April, 2011

Hope everyone had a totally great and relaxing Khmer New Years and is still in one piece and safe and sound back at home. A good weekend of live music coming your way once again this weekend - so get out there and get on the dance floor.

The best news in recent times for the live music scene is the emergence of a great new venue - Mao's. If you can get past the name and have a look inside then you will see it is a really fantastic venue. It is right on the riverfront (Sothearos) next to the night market on the corner with Street 106 (the double boulevard coming from the railway station). It has great views to the river, is spacious and well laid out.

On Friday night you can catch DJ Cool Sam, DJ Achaya, DJ Rob Little and DJ Stevie J who will be pumping out some RED HOT vibes and giving away free Bloody Maries! On Saturday Holliday in Cambodia will play 2 or 3 sets of live music. Next weekend the Chicago blues maestro Little Duke together with the Mekong Blues Messengers will debut at the venue. Totally worth getting into this new scene.

There has been a noticeable lull within the local music scene recently due to the non-appearance of a number top bands - including the Mekong Pirates and Los Poporks and the Cambodian Space Project. Thankfully the latter is back in-country and will perform a number of gigs over the next couple of months. They will play in Siem Reap this weekend and at Equinox next weekend. There is talk that the members of the former two bands are reconfiguring and re-coagulating into 2 new outfits. This augers well for the live music scene over the next few months. You might be able to catch some part of the outfits at Equinox on Saturday night as a jam session has been organized to replace a canceled gig.

Another gig that was canceled this weekend was the much anticipated and hotly sought-after Pussy & the Learjets from Thailand. It was a totally unavoidable consequence of the fact that one of the band members fell seriously ill earlier this week. All members of the live music scene here in Cambodia send our thoughts, hopes and wishes for a smooth and speedy recovery and are eager to see the band perform their totally high-energy thrash-rock here in the land of the Khmers. If you haven't seen anything from them yet then you can see a totally great video of the band here.

Although the gigs were canceled Sharkys are still going to present some great punk and alternative rock over the weekend. The Stiff Little Punks will play on Friday and will be preceded by a showcase by Rock & Roll High School (The Ramones tribute band). On Saturday Squishy will put on their all-girl rock sets. Cool!

Rubies also have a party on this weekend and DJ Dr. Wah Wah will be pumping out the tunes. Should be a great party - as usually the case at this venue. Another welcome return to the scene is Les Bannis who will perform on Sunday after noon at The Local II near the riverfront.

Cheers, have a great weekend and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.
