The DJ scene is definitely carrying us through this weekend as the live music scene takes another dip into the low season.
The only reprieve is the gig of the week which is happening at Equinox as they come back online with the return of international the hip-hop duo 12em & Raph for a one-night-only show. It is happening this Saturday night. Cool!
You might also want to try a new venue in town playing live music. It is the Red Orchid. They have a regular Friday and Saturday night gig from 8.30PM to 10.30PM (which apparently is open-mic-ish) and a Sunday session for expats 4pm till 6-ish. The Red Orchid is a nice intimate venue for cool tunes and is getting Karaoke together with western and Khmer music 7 days (somebody needs to sort-them out about that one !). The music currently features Brentus JP who is an Australian singer, songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, percussionist, didgerido-er. Playing mainly originals "Coffee Shop Rock " cross genre , jazz, blues, folk, country influences , celtic. Give it a try.
Pontoon are delivering us a totally special series of gigs with 3 international artists over the next few weeks. They definitely take the mantle as the #1 DJ scene over this period.
Plenty more coming up also as the Cambodian Space Project make a surprise, one-off return on their way back from London, England and then on to Australia. The show put on by Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers on the FCC rooftop in a couple of weeks will be a totally awesome gig. If you have not seen this band before (and even if you have) then it is really worth getting down to see them. They are really a totally great outfit with a musicianship that is unique to this part of the world. Additionally, the wonderfully beautiful songs from singer-songwriter Amanda Bloom teams up with international poet Colin Cheney for Phnom Penh's Poetry Series and Open-Mic at the Java Cafe. All coming in the next few weeks.
Some people may definitely hate me for this next bit but here it is anyway. The following is a retro video remix by Super Simple Side Dish of a Teaner Terners' song It's the 80's. It was passed to me by Lance from the band a couple of weeks ago. If you listen to it then the words "What the #@$# is this $#@!#$^" may come into your mind. If you listen to it again then you the words "Yes, this is total #%^%$#" will also come into your head OR the single word "mmmmmmmmmm........" as you peruse the deeper meaning of the artists' work. If you listen to it a third time then you will be taken to a place inside your head that you would never have been to for years (you might not want to be there but it will take you there anyway) and an annoying riff will float around your head for the next couple of days - but anyway, that is the idea of an artist - to get inside your head. Enjoy it (or not) here:
Have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig-guide.
