The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 3rd of February, 2011

Hey,

Bucket loads of videos emanating from across the web in the direction of Sharkys Penhstock II festival last weekend. The pick of the bunch in my opinion has to be Devo's Mongoloid as performed by The Stiff Little Punks (click the image below). The performance from the
band totally picked the energy up and set the tempo for the rest of the weekend. A stack more videos from the weekend are available at the URL http://www.youtube.com/user/SharkyBarBoss and are provided by the boys from Sharkys. Photos also abound from the three day festival and I have have scattered a few throughout this weeks blurb.

If you are a user of Facebook you can now also pick up Leng Pleng updates and additions as they come to hand throughout the week. In order to do this go to the URL
http://www.facebook.com/LengPleng and click on the LIKE button. You will then see status updates on your wall as we post them. You can also post comments  and abuse us across the page also. Please help us by spreading the word to other punters , publicans and musicians.

One not to miss this weekend will be the inagural Kep Beach Festival. The line-up promises a totally cool time as the grandfather of Khmer music, the Ray Charles of Cambodia, Kong Nai and his son Kong Boran performs at sunset on the beach in Kep.

This will be preceded, and followed, by line-up of local and international DJs, including:
DJ Antaro, DJ Hoxup, and DJ Ste. There will also be a dance performance by the Khmer Cultural Development organization featuring 30 children from Kampot plus a special performance by the sensationally cool professors of Khmer thrash rock Cartoon Emo. Also look out for a totally danceable repetoire outlayed by  Professor Kinski & MC Curly at around 9:30PM. Cool!

I believe, as many others do, that 2010 will go down as an auspicious year for the local/expat music scene in Cambodia because there has been such a huge expansion and diversification in all aspects.  One of the most important aspects is the fact that a large number of the bands are performing original material.

The year saw the emergence of the Khmer 60's space rock outfit the Cambodian Space Project plus a number of indie-thrash-punk rock bands in the form of the Teaner Terners, Bum N Draze, Cartoon Emo the Stiff Little Punks, and The Choppers. There has also been huge emergence of the local-international hip-hop, electonic music scene from people such as Tiny Toones,  Professor Kinski & MC Curly and Klapyahandz. Combine that with the reggae-funk-French influence of Los Poppork and the Mekong Pirates and you can see that there is a great basis to conclude that there is something very special about what is happening here.

This is also evidenced by the fact that within the next few months the local music scene will see the release of no less than 5 new albums from local bands. These being from bands such as Tiny Toones, the Teaner Terners, the Cambodian Space Project, and Professor Kinski & MC Curly - all of which will add to the songs already released by Bum N' Draze (who are entering their 8th year and take the mantel as the Kingdoms longest running original expat band).
The first of these album releases will occur at MetaHouse this Saturday at 8:00PM. It will be the album Generation Z by Tiny Toones. It should be a great party as the new album will be performed plus there will be new video clips, T-shirts and auctions, as well as (of course) your chance to be one of the first to pick up an authentic master copy of the new album.

For this weeks download I will point you in the direction of another great local ensemble? These are some of the songs from  Soren Borch & the Dudley Do-Rights and they can be listened to here: http://sites.google.com/site/thedudleydorights/home/free-mp3s . Enjoy them as you type ;o) !

Gig Guide - Thursday the 24th of February, 2011

Hey,

Lots on this week for patrons and punters of live music. No less than 2 festivals on this weekend - being Khmarnaval in Sihanoukville and Penhstock II in Phnom Penh. You will be able to catch performances from both festivals with relative ease as the Khmarnaval  begins on Thursday and goes through till Saturday whereas Penhstock II begins on Friday and goes through until Sunday night.

The HUUUUGE event in Phnom Penh will be Penhstock II occurring at Sharkys over three days. There is a total of 18 bands all band dates and times at the time of writing are now available here. Each band will be playing for a limit of 25 to 30 minutes so the best idea would be to get there early, settle in and enjoy the entire collection of performances. With such a huge participation from the expat music community in Cambodia you can expect something very special.

During Khmarnaval there will be street performers, street dance, street parades, and music over 2 days - but the big night will occur on the Friday as upwards of 4 bands take to the stage - including At Robieb and Octopus (who will also perform on Thursday). The night will be rounded off with the sub-atomic beats of MC Curley featuring Professor Kinsky, who will probably be injecting a few of the electronic versions of the Cambodian Space Project tracks he has mixed. Totally cool!

Other gigs of note is the main performance of Octopus at Equinox on Saturday. I have seen these guys and they really put out a great sound and have a very professional and polished performance - worth catching. If you don't cacth them on Saturday then there are several other gigs they are playing - including at The 252 (which was moved from Thursday the 3rd to Wednesday the 2nd) and the brand new and total cool venue Le Moon.

This weekend also sees the return of Live African Music at the Do It All Club as well as danceable, Latino pop at the FCC Phnom Penh on Friday and Saturday nights.

Lots coming up. I will leave you with this special download from Richard Ian Greene who wrote this song called Alexandria (5MB).

Cheers and see you around the traps.

Lots of Extra Stuff to Add to Yesterdays Gig Guide

Hey,

Several things to fill you in on that were not included in the previous gig-guide spiel.

Additional Gigs
  • The Riverside Bistro is well an truly supporting the local live music scene with live music there every week from Tuesdays to Sundays from 8:30PM. Currently there is a Filipino House Band called Livewire who perform a mixture of pop and rock, new and old. This is really a good music venue and supporting this place could really help the local scene.

  • There is a French band which is just about to hit town and make a short tour. They are called Octopus and feature a huge brass section which includes a HUGE tuba pumping out the bass rhythms.

During the tour the band is also extolling the virtues of music and how it can help poor and underprivileged children through a project called Fanfare Sans Frontieres. If you are able to read French then you can pick up some of the story here www.fanfaresansfrontieres.org. You can also catch some of their tunes on their MySpace page here - http://www.myspace.com/560463415/music/playlists/octopus-brass-band-s-playlist-1508687

The band will be playing at The Score Friday 18-Feb-2011 and at Gasolina the day after starting at 6:00PM. They then head down to Sihanoukville for the Khmarnaval before returning to Phnom Penh for gigs at Equinox, The 252, La Croisette and Paddy Rice. The details of all the gigs are now listed in the gig guide below.

  • Also worthy of special mention is Khmarnaval which will occur in Sihanoukville next week - from Thursday the 24th of February to Saturday the 26th of February. The festival is organized by local rock & roll legend  Bob Passion and is a huge event in support of people (especially children) affected by HIV and AIDS. There will be street parades, theater, dance, DJs as well live music (as mentioned above). You can see more details at Bob's web site at http://www.bobpassion.net/

  • Another gig that didn't make it into yesterdays email is the DJ D'Tonn at the X-Bar in Siem Reap. See the gig guide below for details
Downloads

There have been a myriad of downloads that have been made available by some of the local bands. I would like to include links to downloads as a regular special section in the weekly emails if there is enough content so please let me know if you have any videos or MP3 links you would like putting out there. The ones I have this week include:
Well that should be it until next week. Make sure to tune into the web site for any updates from here.

Cheers

Gig Guide - Thursday the 17th of February, 2011

Hey,

Well it looks like the music scene here is going through transitional phase with some groups disbanding or moving outside the country while other evolve into something fresh or brand new bands coagulate from the eclectic mix of lone musicians. A showcase and celebration of the local live music scene is the annual Penhstock put on by Sharkys. In November 2009 the inaugural Penhstock showcased a total of 8 of the countries best expat bands - this month, with the emergence of Penhstock II, there will be over 18 bands! The festival will occur over three days on the 25th, 26th and 27th with 6 bands performing on each night. An un-ordered list of  the bands for each night is available on the Sharky blog at http://sharkybar.blogspot.com/2011/02/penhstock-ii-schedule.html.Stayed tuned for more next week.

Another great happening will occur in Kep on March 5th with the Kep Beach Festival. It will include a great DJ line-up playing a mix of African groove, soul, funk and more. Kong Nay - the grandfather of Khmer blues -  will also perform there as will 30 local orphans who will perform a mixture of Apsara, modern dancing and theatre. Should be a totally great event - look out for more news via this web site and http://www.kepbeachfestival.com/.

The Srey Thy and the Cambodian Space Project are set to return to Cambodia this coming week and will perform at Equinox on the 4th of March before heading off the Hong Kong (with Bong Sak) and the U.S. - cool!

Equinox will also host Soren Borch and the Dudley Do-Rights this Saturday and will be definitely worth catching. They are an acoustic setup that play a totally danceable mix of blues, folk, country, bluegrass, gospel, jazz, rockabilly, and other forms of good-time upbeat music. Another danceable mix will also come from the 14-member Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra which will perform at Sharkys on Saturday night.

Also, as an adjunct to last weeks post, I have it on good authority that you can currently catch Jimmy Baeck and his great saxophone licks on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at Studio 182.

Cheers and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 10th of February, 2011

Hey,

Several new faces at the Setsara Acoustic Sessions last night with cameo performances by several passing travelers. The appreciative audience burst into song with the performers on many occasions. The open-mic night continues at Paddy Rice tonight.

Studio 182 will be hosting a new singer for the coming period and the change-over night can be caught there on Friday. Watch out for ex-Hellhounds slide guitar player Jimmy Baeck at this venue. Jimmy's licks through the saxophone are a rare and totally worthwhile experience in Phnom Penh.

Also on Friday night you will be able to catch Bun 'N Draze as they do their best to completely annoy the neighbors as they set themselves to demolish Equinox. Should be a real exercise in true rock & roll grit.

Another new ensemble to hit the Phnom Penh airwaves this week is Squishy, featuring Melanie. They will do a support gig at Sharky Bar starting at 8:00PM on Saturday night. This will be followed by the congruous Captain Jack who continue to pump out a great Rolling Stones mix in totally danceable proportions. Steve 'Sweet Licks' Goodman will be there and he promises to have a totally in-tune guitar for the whole night.

Also on Saturday night will be Kheltica who perform at a new venue known as The Score. Not sure the details of this venue - all I know is that it is behind a place called The Place. Additionally, if you are in Kep on Saturday, then catch the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra at the Kukuluku Beach Club. If you in Siem Reap on Sunday then catch Milo and Friends (and there are a lot of them) at Molly Malones. Cool!

I neglected to mention last week of the gig at the 99 Bar featuring the Stiff Little Punks and The Choppers. By all reports the gig was totally packed with people spilling out onto the street. The Choppers are an original band playing a mix of original indie-rock numbers - totally great sound coming from these guys. Also, I have also been told that the band At Robiep have been wowing their audience with some unbelievably good French rock & roll. Make sure to catch all these bands in the coming weeks if you can.

Finally, you can catch a rare performance by Skip Sutherland (Ex-Radio City) at the Mith Samlanh Funfair on early Saturday afternoon. Before that I urge you to get to the fun fair in the morning. It is a great ambiance, lots of things to do and see and some bargains to be had at some of the stalls selling second-hand stuff.

Cheers and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide:
