The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 31st of March, 2011

Hey,

The web site has a slightly new look now with regular gigs being moved to a permanent position on the right-hand side menu. The main gig guide will highlight just the new, latest info every week and open mic gigs will be highlighted using a green microphone .

As the heat starts to bear down on us and the low-season starts to bite on some venues, we can expect a few changes to the live music landscape over the next few months. Things are a lot better than they were just a year or two ago - as evidenced by the array of great performances on offer this week - but times must always move on. First there was the Chinese House (which has metamorphosed into a new restaurant and bar with rumors of possible live music - albeit toned down somewhat) and then there was Maxines (Snow's Bar) last weekend (with fairly valid rumors that a new venue will open up a little further down the river some time in the not too distant future). Now it looks like there is one more ...........

Ritchy and Phil pose for a recent promo photo
One of, if not THE best quality performances on offer in Phnom Penh over the past 18 months has been Phil & Ritchy who showcase their totally amazing talents every day at Studio 182. The quality of technical skill and artistic feel these musicians have brought to this town has been generally unsurpassed. Today we are greeted with the news that Studio 182 will close. Fortunately for us it is not all bad news because this wonderful French duo will return after recording an album with Mr. Nash in Malaysia and Laos to join the Cambodian live music scene yet again - phew! And this is preceded by............... the Studio 182 closing down party !!! Whoooo-hoooooo. It will happen tonight at Studio 182 - so make sure to get down there and make it a great time worthy of the great shows put on by this classic Jazz Club bar.

One of the highlights this week will occur on Friday night when Los Poporks return to the PSE Charity Fundraiser Festival at the PSE compound in Steung Meanchey. This is a large annual show over 2 days that has many activities and performances that aims to raise money for the organization in it's quest to provide proper education and a stable future for many of Cambodia's underprivileged children. The night will probably also be highlighted by a surprise performance by the members of the Cambodian Space Project.

Another performance this Friday will be an acoustic version of the Lazy Drunks at the Frog & Shamrock. It features two of the members from the full band - Tom and Ian and promises to be a great performance with unique quality.

Le Jardin has stepped into the live music scene quite purposefully again this week with two gigs in their garden featuring French performers - CARMEN flamenco on Thursday and the Family Sunday Sessions with Sycé Swing on Sunday afternoon.

Sharkys introduce the first, of what is being termed, the Showcase Evenings. The idea of these evenings is to showcase new solo, duo and other new ensembles to the Sharky crowd. This first session features the classic Irish folk tunes of the Jameson Brothers. These are totally great for a beer and a sing-along to some totally classic tunes.

I leave you this week with a sample of the great work available in Phnom Penh by Ian White and Chris Minko. Ian is a video / documentary producer and he recently completed this film clip called Bangkok Tattoo by local band Krom - it can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/user/themekongsessions and is a song dedicated to the memory of Wassana Panmannee-Minko.

Cheers and see you around the traps. Here is this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 24th of March, 2011

Hey,

Another full weekend of music a-commin' your way with no less than 11 gigs this Friday and 7 on Saturday. Not only that, but there are gigs listed in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kep, Sihanoukville as well as Prey Veng and Kratie - outrageous!

The Kratie gig is the debut of local expat band the Kratie Scratch Band featuring Karl Gerner on the harmonica. It is a long and much anticipated wait for these guys and promises to be a totally great night at the best restaurant in town - Red Sun Falling. The Prey Veng gig will happen in about three weeks during Khmer New Year - on the night of the 16th of April - when Srey Thy's village will put on their annual party and host to the Cambodian Space Project. Stay tuned in future editions for more details.

Equinox continue their bi-weekly swing show tonight as the Phnom Penh Pswingers kick off their Big Swing Out Weekend. This 4-day event has always been a totally great time for the participants and promises to be a wild weekend of swing dancing. Having played for the PPPSwings previously I can personally recommend it as a great night for any blokes out there as the club is full of gorgeous women. The Bayon Blues will feature in their Blues Cruise on Friday evening.

Dan Ögren plays with the Lazy
Drunks
at Penhstock II
Tonight is a sad night. Tonight will possibly see the final performance of the mainstays of the expat live-music scene in Cambodia - the "Swedish Ambassador", the Mr. Music of Cambodia, Dan Ögren. Dan has played with just about every expat-band in town - including The Hellhounds, Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers, the Cambodian Space Project, Soren Borch and the Dudley Do-Rights, the Hot Strings Jazz Club, the Uke Dukes, the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra, and the Lazy Drunks to name but a few. A highly skilled and creative musician who totally loves his trade and all those who are lucky enough to have his respect. He has always been there whenever someone needed a bass player, drummer, or keyboards or for some backing vocals. Dan's plans involve getting on a yacht to sail the waters around Europe - pulling the ropes and strumming the strings. You can keep up with Dan at his blog (http://www.myspace.com/renaramadan). You can wish Dan well on his new ventures at his final performance tonight at Paddy Rice's Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam where his talents just shine with D'Sco: The Geckos of Love.

There are several other special gigs that are also on this weekend - including the fundraiser hosted by the Memphis Pub in aid of Krousar Thmey's 20th Anniversary. It will feature Srey Nuch together with Bona Thiem and the boys from Rock Xpress. Additionally a new venue comes online now with Mao's hosting 2 gigs over the weekend - DJ Coolsam on Friday night and Holiday in Cambodia on Saturday. This relatively new music venue on the corner north of the Night market and will hopefully manifest into a great new venue for us to enjoy our weekly music buffet. Get there and support them.

The Teaner Terners return to Equinox this weekend. The band has delayed the release of their new album - probably by about 1 month. It will be a 2-volume set of original songs with both volumes being released separately, online and in hard-copy, during two separate gigs that promise to be a huge show for all followers of the band.

Another great gig this weekend for lovers of classic Chicago blues should be Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers on Saturday night at Sharkys. Also look out for a totally great series of gigs coming up at this venue for April - including Pussy and the Learjets and the Cambodian Headbangers Ball - as Dave, Ross and the boys ramp up the volume and present some of the Kingdoms best Khmer original rock bands.

One last thing is for me to point you in the direction of Ethnomite Pux who is a local experimental sound and vision artist. Some of the work they have on offer can be seen here: http://www.myspace.com/ethnomitepux.

Cheers and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 17th of March, 2011

Hey,

...and a happy St. Patrick's day to all and sundry. Paddy Rice will be celebrating such tonight on the riverfront with two bands Kheltica and Holiday in Cambodia - expect a packed house. The venue follows up with more music on Friday night with the Ten Dollar Bill Band a rock & roll cover band hailing from Ho Chi Minh city who promise “If you can’t dance to it, we don’t play it.”.

Squishy headline Friday at The Cavern on Street 104 and will extol a night of alternative rock. An acoustic sample of the bands music can been seen at the TukTukSessions.com web site as lead singer/guitarist Melanie sings a song made famous by Cindi Lauper I Drove All Night - http://www.tuktuksessions.com/?p=135 .

Pontoon continue with a experimental mix of electronic and live music this Friday night when sax player Jose Costillo will combine with the house-electric vibes pumped out by DJ Illest, DJ Lefty, and Marc Anthony. The HUGE news coming from this venue is the imminent arrival of one of the original members of Prodigy - Leeroy Thornhill and electronic celebrity, music & visual artist and actor Goldie (who, amongst a long list of other tributes, appeared in the movie Snatch) on the 8th of next month. The combination of these two internationally renowned DJs in Phnom Penh will definitely be something not to miss.

An electronic-house-funk mix can also be caught at Equinox on Saturday night as Professor Kinski and MC Curley combine to pump out a totally danceable mix of Khmer funky hip-hop, Khmer 60's electronic psychedelic rock. A more down-home friendly atmosphere of country-rock and blues can be heard at Sharkys on Saturday with Soren Borch and The Dudley Do-Rights.

If you are in Siem Reap for the the weekend please try to get down to the Banana Leaf on Saturday night as Milo and Friends put on a charity fundraiser for the victims of the Japanese earthquake. Later on you can catch DJ D'Tonn and DJ Chase at the X-Bar.

Cheers and see you around the traps.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 10th of March, 2011

Hey,

This week I want to start by pointing you in the direction of a totally cool new web site. It is called the Tuk Tuk Sessions and can be found at http://www.TukTukSessions.com. The site is based on a simple concept -  "One song, one take, one tuk-tuk". A quick peruse of the site will clue you into what the authors, Alan Soutaris and Rory, are doing but basically it is a collection of videos of acoustic cover versions by local musicians. Each song is performed within the confines of a tuk-tuk as it is driven through the streets of Phnom Penh and, as such, the true meaning of the song and the feeling it pervades is enhanced by the scenes in the background and the faces of the curious onlookers as the vehicle roles on down the street. Totally cool!. I encourage you to take a look. If you are a musician then I also encourage you to get in contact with Alan and Rory and talk to them about getting a song up there.

A quick reminder about our new Facebook page. It can be found at http://www.facebook.com/LengPleng and will allow you to make comments and keep in contact with what is happening over a shorter time frame. To become a part of it just visit the page and then click the LIKE button (and sign-up there is you are not already on Facebook).

Gigs of the week include the Stiff Little Punks at 99 Bar on Friday. It is a farewell gig to their drummer and promises to be a great party - anyone who saw the band at Penhstock II will know not to miss this one. The Lazy Drunks will also rock through some 60s and 70s classics at the same venue on Saturday night. The FCC Phnom Penh continues to import outfits from surrounding countries as the band Swackhammer - an expat band from Vietnam - returns to the rooftop on Sisowath Quay. They play both Friday and Saturday. On Saturday also you can catch the new full-on electrified Chicago blues of Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers at Equinox. They will be playing with their new bass player, Chris, and promise to be a totally great way to enjoy your Saturday night.

I want to also quickly update you again on the growing list of open-mic nights around the traps. Setsara continues every Wednesday night with their very popular Acoustic Sessions and is followed on Thursday by the Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam at Paddy Rice. If you are looking for somewhere to listen or play live music on a Sunday afternoon then there is The Local 2 which starts at 4PM near the riverfront. There is also the Riverside Bistro which has an open-mic every Tuesday and Sunday from 8:30PM. Finally there is Sihanoukville's great live music venue called The Wall who have an open-mic every Friday night starting at 9PM. This week it is being hosted by guitar god Kenny Smith. If you are in town then I encourage you to get down there.

Next, just some news that in the coming days a new page will be added to the web site and will contain a list of links to worthwhile downloads of photos and videos. Haven't had time to do it yet - but it will be done in the next few days. Stay tuned! If you have any you want included then please feel free to email me.

I will leave you this week with a link to some great tracks from the Khmer electro-hip-hop-rock-funk maestro's Professor Kinski and MC Curly. Their latest tracks can be listened to here , including Kinski's Bachelor mix of the Khmer 60s rock song Roam Roam Roam featuring the great vocals of Srey Thy (http://soundcloud.com/user1700117/cambodian-space-project-roam/).

Cheers and see you around the traps.
