The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 28th of April, 2011

Hey,

This weekend sees a certain amount of consolidation in the local live music and DJ scene with totally great array of quality live music from classic 60's and 70's pop to 80's/90's alternative-indie rock, to reggae/funk, Cambodian rock, to hard-core metal, to gypsy jazz and to un-miss-able full-on Chicago blues. The great thing about it is that there are more bands playing original music than ever. Variety is the key and you will need to make your choice on Friday and Saturday as they are all (mostly) crammed into these 2 nights!

If you want to get an early start this weekend then I recommend you heading to Mao's tonight for the versatile and wonderful sounds of Holliday in Cambodia. They will start at around 8:30PM.

Friday night sees the much anticipated return of some members of the Mekong Pirates as they re-coagulate into a new outfit with the great name of Cyclosonik. They will make their debut at Le Jardin starting at the earlier time of 7:30PM. Sharkys will have the full membership of the Lazy Dunks playing on Friday night and will be preceded by a showcase of the The Choppers. Later on Friday you can make your way to Mao's (cnr. the riverfront and street 106) for a great night of  DJ collectives from DJ Lefty featuring DJ Cool Sam.

On Saturday, Mao's will also host the totally great pumpin' Chicago blues riffs and standards from Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers. This band should totally roar at this venue with the well laid out format. This band can really get the whole house moving and dancing - and this venue will really suit them. The band is fronted by Jonas 'Little Duke' Hastings who has played with the likes of Peter Green and Taj Mahal and other great blues legends. This band at this venue is not to be missed.

Earlier on Saturday, at MetaHouse, you will be able to catch another serene, self-possessed and enigmatic performance from Ingolv Haaland as he joins with Ouch Savy and other special guests for an eclectic performance of soothing Khmer/Nordic original compositions. Definitely worth getting there.

The ever-popular, totally danceable and rockin' psychedelic riffs of the Cambodian Space Project returns to the capital this Saturday night at Equinox. Expect a packed house at the newly-renovated venue that promises more space and better air-conditioning. Should be a HUGE gig.

The Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra will also most likely play to a packed dance floor this Saturday night at the FCC Phnom Penh. The wonderful array of eastern-European, gypsy-swing and folk presented by the (up to) 14-member band is totally worth seeing.

Lastly but not 'leastly' is the inaugural Cambodian Headbangers Ball that will be showcased at Sharkys on Saturday night. This is a totally new concept and many say it the start of something BIG in this country. The night will include performances by Pilgrim, Anti-Fate, Sliten6IX, Oscar's Band and AstraNova. Several of these bands are young Cambodians performing full-on hard core ORIGINAL Khmer rock. If you are a Sinn Sisomouth fan then I would imagine that this gig might not be for you - but if you are bold enough to get there then you may bear witness to the beginning of a new era of alternative rock in Cambodia.

It's a totally tough choice - I know - but whichever venue and gig you decide to get to then have a great time. Also, if you like this web site and newsletter service, then please mention it to your friends and also particularly to the managers of the bars around the traps. Please understand that if we don't get some level of benefit for the service we provide then we will not be able to continue.

Cheers, have a great and totally danceable weekend and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 21st of April, 2011

Hey,

Hope everyone had a totally great and relaxing Khmer New Years and is still in one piece and safe and sound back at home. A good weekend of live music coming your way once again this weekend - so get out there and get on the dance floor.

The best news in recent times for the live music scene is the emergence of a great new venue - Mao's. If you can get past the name and have a look inside then you will see it is a really fantastic venue. It is right on the riverfront (Sothearos) next to the night market on the corner with Street 106 (the double boulevard coming from the railway station). It has great views to the river, is spacious and well laid out.

On Friday night you can catch DJ Cool Sam, DJ Achaya, DJ Rob Little and DJ Stevie J who will be pumping out some RED HOT vibes and giving away free Bloody Maries! On Saturday Holliday in Cambodia will play 2 or 3 sets of live music. Next weekend the Chicago blues maestro Little Duke together with the Mekong Blues Messengers will debut at the venue. Totally worth getting into this new scene.

There has been a noticeable lull within the local music scene recently due to the non-appearance of a number top bands - including the Mekong Pirates and Los Poporks and the Cambodian Space Project. Thankfully the latter is back in-country and will perform a number of gigs over the next couple of months. They will play in Siem Reap this weekend and at Equinox next weekend. There is talk that the members of the former two bands are reconfiguring and re-coagulating into 2 new outfits. This augers well for the live music scene over the next few months. You might be able to catch some part of the outfits at Equinox on Saturday night as a jam session has been organized to replace a canceled gig.

Another gig that was canceled this weekend was the much anticipated and hotly sought-after Pussy & the Learjets from Thailand. It was a totally unavoidable consequence of the fact that one of the band members fell seriously ill earlier this week. All members of the live music scene here in Cambodia send our thoughts, hopes and wishes for a smooth and speedy recovery and are eager to see the band perform their totally high-energy thrash-rock here in the land of the Khmers. If you haven't seen anything from them yet then you can see a totally great video of the band here.

Although the gigs were canceled Sharkys are still going to present some great punk and alternative rock over the weekend. The Stiff Little Punks will play on Friday and will be preceded by a showcase by Rock & Roll High School (The Ramones tribute band). On Saturday Squishy will put on their all-girl rock sets. Cool!

Rubies also have a party on this weekend and DJ Dr. Wah Wah will be pumping out the tunes. Should be a great party - as usually the case at this venue. Another welcome return to the scene is Les Bannis who will perform on Sunday after noon at The Local II near the riverfront.

Cheers, have a great weekend and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Wednesday the 13th of April, 2011 - Special Khmer New Year Edition

Hey,

Not a lot of gigs in this weeks guide - no doubt due to the exiting of most of the musicians and patrons to far flung places around the region for their Khmer New Year holiday. Lots of gigs coming up over the next few weeks however.

You can get stuck into some sounds of the DJs at the Riverhouse tonight as they put on a party especially designed for the start of the holiday period. Also, if you are staying around town like DJ Rob Little, DJ Stevie and DJ Achaya then you can dance to the rhythms of said DJs at Pontoon on Friday night.

A very special provincial party can be had in Prey Veng this weekend also as Srey Thy has returned from her tour of the U.S. and will party on with the Cambodian Space Project in her home village. This is turning into an annual event and I can tell you that it was a lot of fun and a totally unique experience last year. The party will occur on the Saturday night the 16th of April. One way to get there is by jumping on a specially arranged Cosmic Space Bus on Saturday morning at 10:00AM outside La Croisette. The bus will re-enter the Phnom Penh atmosphere at the same location at evening on the next day.

If you are staying in town to relax and enjoy the quietness then there are still several venues that are still open. The Memphis Pub will be open as usual all through Khmer New Year. This venue can always be relied upon for great quality live music late into the night. Pontoon is still open as mentioned previously, as is Mao's, the Heart of Darkness, and Setsara.Equinox will be open also but only from 5:00PM onwards.

If you are a msusician then don't forget to keep your eyes on the Leng Pleng Music Classifieds - it has a relatively regular flow of people looking for bands or band members. Please also feel to LIKE our Facebook page at http://www.Facebook.com/LengPleng/

Cheers and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 7th of April, 2011

Hey,

Little doubt that this weekend's main gig is the Friday night hosting of international stars Leeroy Thornhill and Goldie at Pontoon. Latest news via the venue's web page (http://www.facebook.com/#!/Pontoon) has it that the gig will also now include MC LowQui (Goldie´s number one MC of choice). There are tickets for sale for this gig at the level of $8 in advance or $10 on the door. You might want to warm up at The Score and KlapyaHandz which starts at the earlier time of 8:00PM.

Mao's are hosting Professor Kinski, MC Curley, VJ Scouty and  DJ Yaka on Saturday night - which should be a good way to keep the electro-house-funk party happening. Live music punters can catch Holliday in Cambodia who play two gigs this weekend and also Soren Borch and the Dudley Do-Rights who play at Sharkys on Friday night and will be showcased by the Lazy Drunks (Unplugged) beforehand.

Next week will be a News Years Holiday - so drive safe on the roads and have a great time. If you want to get the news of the Cambodian Space Project's latest tour of China and the U.S. then you can join the band for their sojourn to Prey Veng and Srey Thy's Home Village Party on the 16th of this month. Look out in subsequent weeks for the Mekong Pirates Album Launch at Gasolina and the Cambodian Headbangers Ball at Sharkys.

I will leave you this week with a taste of new releases of original material from two local expat acts. A beautiful song from Sergey Minstrel which he recorded in his home studio after traveling through northern Cambodia & Angkor Wat - the video can bee seen and listened to here: Sergey Minstrel - http://www.facebook.com/#!/video/video.php?v=175451242503882&comments . The Teaner Terners have also made available the opening track of their upcoming album, A Dark Art - http://soundcloud.com/theteanerterners/a-dark-art

Cheers and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks' gig-guide.
