The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 2nd of June, 2011

EQUINOX - bar cocktails, art gallery, live music, restaurant, pool table, foosball, dancing, rooftop. Open daily from 7:00AM
Hey,

The great news this week is that the Kampot River Music Festival is all set for take-off. The 3-day music festival will happen over the full-moon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 24th, 25th and 26th of June, 2011. There will be a total of 3 venues and 10 bands, including (in probable order of appearance over the 3 days):
  • The Teaner Terners
  • Dub Addiction
  • Chiet's Kampot Band
  • Lost Highway
  • The Grass Snake Union Band
  • Cyclosonik
  • Captain Jack
  • The Cambodian Space Project
  • Bayon Blues
  • Syscé Swing
Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 on the door for the complete 3-days. For the Saturday and Sunday events, people between the ages of 10 to 15 (inclusive) can get tickets for $12 and children under 10 are free.

The Friday night also has special tickets just for that night only. If you want to be part of the festival for this night only then the cost will be $5 in advance and $10 on the door, however a 3-day pass includes this event in the ticket purchase already. This should be a totally smokin' gig with one of the hottest bands in the country topping the bill - Dub Addiction. This has band totally wowed audiences in their two opening gigs so far, with their last gig at Sharkys drawing calls for an encore 3 times. The energy and the groove of this new band is awesome and I encourage you to get down to see them at their next gig - which I believe is penciled in as Mao's on the 18th of this month. They will be preceded at the festival by the indomitable Teaner Terners.

Tickets will for the festival go on sale this Monday - keep tuned to the web site for more details of how and where to get your tickets. The festival is looking really great at this point in time and I urge you to get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

On to this weeks gig guide, and it has dominated by Mao's who have had live music on every night this week. They continue to present to you the best of Cambodia's bands this weekend with Sysé Swing on Friday and the Cambodian Space Project on Saturday night. Really looking forward to these gigs. Mao's will continue to provide the best Phnom Penh has to offer over the next few weeks with regular gigs from Mix & Match, Musikero, Muzikbyte and DJ Cool Sam and totally one-off gigs from Lost Highway and Dub Addiction (as mentioned) plus more!

Another new band that is really making waves across the live music community is the Grass Snake Union Band. They played to a packed house a couple of weeks ago at Equinox and will return to the same venue this Friday for a repeat performance. Equinox boasts the best system of sound performance available to local bands and the new layout and great air-conditioning will have the punters jumping till late in the night. The venue has Sysé Swing playing at their regular swing dance tonight.

Some of you may have been wondering what happened to Captain Jack - well they are back with a huge new couple of sets this Friday at Sharkys. This will be a much anticipated return and the punters and patrons of this venue are looking forward to a huge night of full-on Rolling Stones-esk rock. Not to be missed !

The Intercontinental Hotel is presenting Cecilia Yudha this weekend for the more culturally incline. The 8:00PM start time is not definite and I encourage you to call Art+ before you go to confirm. The X-Bar in Siem Reap will have a huge party this weekend with both Lost Highway followed by DJ Paradise on the bill. The Elsewhere First Friday party is on again this weekend and will happen across the road from Equinox with DJ DSN tuning the dance floor.

Look out in coming weeks for two more parties at Rubies, Diplo at Pontoon, the Ukes of Hazzard at the 99 Bar and a suite of local Khmer rock & roll bands at Sharkys

I leave you this week with a link to a video showing the total uniqueness and expertise of local Norwegian composer Ingolv Haaland and his group and and their original composition Cambodia. Ingolv can be seen and heard around Cambodia on occasion and I, like many others, hope he can bring his full band here one day. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxGLR4AoOmA

As always, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 26th of May, 2011

EQUINOX - bar cocktails, art gallery, live music, restaurant, pool table, foosball, dancing, rooftop. Open daily from 7:00AM

Hey,

The Kampot River Music Festival is rolling ahead as planned and will feature at least 7 of Cambodia's premier musical acts preforming beneath the full moon in one of the most beautiful and auspicious locations imaginable - the banks of the Kampot River, Cambodia. The festival will occur on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 24th, 25th and 26th of June, 2011 and information on how, when and where to buy tickets will be available in next weeks Leng Pleng newsletter.

A huge number of gigs on this weekend. Friday night is totally packed with 10 gigs whilst Saturday daytime has 3 special gigs and night-time has only 5 (but very special) gigs. Tonight you can catch Holliday in Cambodia at Mao's and the debut performance of Jimmy James Caporn at Setsara. The latter is a new performer in town and will turn into a regular Thursday night performance at this venue.

As mentioned last week, Equinox introduces to us yet another of the capitals newest bands - showing us that they are at the forefront of Cambodia's live music scene. The new assemblage is the Grass Snake Union Band and they play bluegrass with a bend toward rock, blues and skiffle. Should be a totally great way to spend Friday night. This venue will also hot a new band in Cyclosonik on Saturday night.

Ritchy & Phil Quartet will also play in Phnom Penh on Friday night at the FCC. This gig will be preceded by free dance lessons on offer by the PSwings dance group from 7:00PM till 8:00PM.

On Saturday Mao's present the a performance of the totally unique, totally eclectic, totally huge Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra. If you haven't been to this venue yet then I urge you to get down there. It is a large, well laid-out colonial era building on the first floor and on the riverfront - corner Sisowath and Street 106 (right next to the night market). Being that this band normally attracts a large number of dancers - the huge wooden dance floor should really allow people to twirl and step their way through the gypsy-folk, swinging sounds of this professional ensemble. Should be a great gig! Look out for the Cambodian Space Project at this venue in the coming weeks.

Great DJ gigs on this week both at Mao's and Pontoon. On Friday is DJ Rob Revo and DJ CoolSam at Mao's playing their Twisted House mix. On Saturday night (well Sunday morning more precisely) DJ Solo and DJ Illest will play Pontoon but be aware that the doors will not open until 1AM that night.

One of the three Saturday afternoon gigs is the special edition of the Tuk Tuk Sessions at the Mith Samlanh Fun Fair on Street 13. They will maneuver a tuk-tuk on stage and have a variety of acts perform to the gathered crowd. Should be quite a spectacle. There are a myriad of other displays and activities on at this afternoon fair and it is worth a look if you have never been before.

Also, news this week of two new web sites. Equinox now have a new site at their domain at http://www.equinox-cambodia.com . You will be able to keep up with all the gigs at this venue, plus art exhibitions, and music and video downloads. Cool! The Teaner Terners have uploaded their new and totally cool site at http://www.theteanerterners.com/ . There are some sections still awaiting content - but when it is finished you will be able to pick up all the band news, download songs and videos and keep up with the bands whereabouts. Right now you can pick up a free download of volume 1 of the bands latest album "Is it Just Me?" at http://soundcloud.com/theteanerterners. Cool! Also, if you are unable to reach the Sharky Blog then you are not the only one - it is because you have an ISP that has blocked all access to URLs with blogspot.com.

I will leave you today with the latest offering from Krom. It is a song entitled "Prison of Sobriety" and can be downloaded here http://www.youtube.com/user/themekongsessions.

Cheers, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 19th of May, 2011

EQUINOX - bar cocktails, art gallery, live music, restaurant, pool table, foosball, dancing, rooftop. Open daily from 7:00AM
Hey,

Just a quick plug for our Facebook page - you can join us at https://www.facebook.com/#!/LengPleng and if you are looking for a job you can join our sister publication of Bong Thom Jobs at https://www.facebook.com/#!/BongThomJobs or more directly at http://www.BongThom.com. Cheers.

This weeks gig guide is testament to the continued growth of the local live music and DJ scene in Cambodia. There are five new venues included in this weeks guide and four new performers. Additionally, there is news of no less than four (4) music festivals coming up in the next few weeks - two in Siem Reap, one in Phnom Penh and one in Kampot. The Kampot River Music Festival is being organized by Leng Pleng and will include at least 3 venues and feature some of the best bands in the country. If you want to become part of the festival then it is still possible - please contact us by replying to this email.

If you are in Siem Reap then don't miss the gig on tonight as the Cambodian Space Project help celebrate the opening of a brand new venue known as The 1961. Phnom Penhers can catch Sysé Swing at the Phnom Penh Swings (http://www.pppswings.com/) troupe weekly dance assemblage at Equinox. Cool!

Equinox are leading the way this week with the exclusive premier of totally new fusion music from a special outfit known as Dub Addiction. Touted in the direction of a reggae-ragga-dub band, the ensemble includes a collective mix of some of the best local and international musicians and electronic music mix artists in the country. It is the first sound of this nature to be available to an audience in Cambodia and is en-swathed within Khmer lyrics. Catch it this Friday at Equinox.

Before that gig you might want to enjoy a dinner and a dance just 100m down the road at a brand new venue called Chayyam. The Bayon Blues will be playing there, starting at the earlier time of 8:00PM, and the great food, wooden floor and spacious dance area should make a great prelude to a great night.

Alternatively there is the all-girl group known as the Mesenger Band who will play at Le Jardin starting at 7:00PM on the same night. This band is made up of girls previously employed in the garment industry and sing songs describing the situation and expressing their hopes for change. Definitely a unique gig.

Mao's continue to support the local live music scene with four performances on this week, including Holliday in Cambodia and Musikero. Sharky's have a showcase on Friday night in the form of Oscar's Band and on Saturday night feature the total rockin', Chicago blues of Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers.

Cartoon Emo Play at the CSP Single Launch
Other great gigs of note include the much-anticipated re-emergence of the Ukes of Hazzard, who will make a special appearance on Tuesday night at the Local II. Also catch Dr. Wah Wah  at Rubies on Friday night. Cool!

Coming up - look out for the Tuk-Tuk Sessions (http://www.TukTukSessions.com/) at the Mith Samlanh Fun Fair and Cartoon Emo at Koh Pich. Also, Equinox will introduce us to two more new bands next weekend. All coming up in future editions.

Have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weekends gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 12th of May, 2011

EQUINOX - bar cocktails, art gallery, live music, restaurant, pool table, foosball, dancing, rooftop. Open daily from 7:00AM

Hey,

Another Thursday rolls around and it is time, yet again, for Television Ted to scribble down the latest happenings in the live music and DJ scene from around Cambodia. If you want to disengage yourself from this weekly newsletter then  use the following link: Change email address / Leave mailing list

Some of you may have been surprised to turn around this week and be faced with yet another 5 day holiday! These Cambodian public service holidays do tend to sneak up from behind and catch you unawares - certainly it has not seemed to have reduced the ferocity of gig guide this week with 8 gigs on Friday and a further 8 on Saturday and Sunday.

Ritchy & Phil have obviously thought ahead and are putting on a series of shows for the residents and holiday revelers in Kep. They will be playing three gigs in celebration of King Sihamoni's birthday - all of which start in the early evening. The gigs will involve special guests with DJ Knaight spinning tunes after the live music on all the gigs and with that most-grooviest of blues-harp players Mr. Nash playing on the Saturday at Knai Bang Chatt. Cool! Let's hope there will be more of these special events put on by provincial venues during future holiday seasons.

A new band hits the Phnom Penh venues this week in the form of the all-Filipino band Musikero. They are a revamped version of Les Bannis and their gigs include Mao's and The Local II this weekend. Mao's and will also have the acoustic classics sung by the two lovely ladies of Holliday in Cambodia tonight - great to see this band for a Thursday night beer on the riverfront. Also, the regular Friday night DJ gig at Mao's will be on with DJ CoolSam and DJ Bob Revo on Friday.

Friday's live music pick is Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers at Equinox. This band played a totally grooving and happening gig at Mao's a couple of weeks ago and are set to swingin'-blues the Phnom Penh PSwings (http://www.pppswings.com/) at the totally revamped venue again this week. Marco and the crew at Equinox now have installed 5HP air-conditioners that will control the heat generated from the packed dance-floor (and should make it totally more bearable for non-smokers ;o) ). It is best to enter the dance scene from the stairs located inside the venue (i.e: past the pool tables) rather than the set of stairs outside on the right.

The Teaner Terners will connect us with the second installment of their "Is It Just Me?" album launch. The event also coincides with the bands anniversary and is going to be filmed by an international professional music video production team who will record the gig and edit the footage to create some music videos - cool! The gig will be happening at Sharkys this Saturday night.

Look out for some exciting gigs coming up with two new bands and possibly two music festivals in June. Have a great extended weekend and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.
