Gig Guide - Thursday the 30th of May, 2011

Hey,

Won't be a long blurb this week due to the fact that I am still in recovery mode after the huge gigs in Kampot last weekend. It was a total blast and thanks have got to go out to all the managers of the venues - Jos and Hugh at the Bodhi Villa, Jean-Yves and Phear at Les Manguiers and Hans and Frank at Villa Vedici. It would never of happened without their thoughtfulness and cooperation. Thanks also to all the bands that put on a totally awesome set of gigs - although things were not perfectly arranged for them, all bands did a totally brilliant set of performances. Special thanks goes to Alex from the Grass Snake Union Band who controlled and engineered the sound the Saturday gig - totally appreciate you Alex. Also thanks the Gildas Maronneaud for the use of all the equipment. Special thanks must also be extended to the staff for the event - Sann Sokha and Sokha Kallyan for their tireless work before, during and after the festival.

Great set of DJ gigs on this Friday - including the regular and totally anticipated First Friday Party at Elsewhere. DJ Illest,DJ Gang & Marco Anthony return to the Riverhouse Lounge and DJ Seiji will pack the dance floor at Pontoon.

Live music on Friday includes a special celebration of Canada Day at The Score that will feature Kheltica.  There will be a lucky draw, and extended happy hour - great! The totally cool and danceable sounds of Sysé Swing will be at Mao's and Musikero play at Paddy Rice.

Saturday night only has four gigs, but every single one of them are smokin' hot - so take your pick. The biggest party has got to be the annual Independence Day Party at Sharkys. A totally famous and anticipated event, this year they feature the wonderful full-on Chicago Blues sounds of Little Duke an the Mekong Blues Messengers. There will be an all you can eat BBQ that starts 5pm plus free flow of Angkor draught from 5pm-9pm all for $9.00 - can't beat that! The immimicable Teaner Terners will debut at Mao's after their return from Kampot and the totally great, totally danceable, totally ragga sounds of Dub Addicition will fill the room at Equinox. As if that's not enough, Memphis Pub are also celebrating this weekend with their 7th anniversary featuring Cartoon Emo, Skip, Section 5 and surprise guests. It will be absolutely massive and totally packed there late into Sunday morning.

Signing off and getting some rest. Have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 23rd of June, 2011

Hey,

Well, the big news this week has got to be the Kampot River Music Festival. It should be a great occasion and it is a privilege for Leng Pleng to have the opportunity to present the festival. We appreciate and thank all the bands and the venues for their participation in the event and hope everyone has a totally great time. This weekend is all about the successes of the live music scene in Cambodia over the past 2 years and is a celebration and a showcase of the totally great talent, original music, incredible fusion and creativity of the diverse array of musicians that live here.

If you are not heading down to Kampot for the weekend then there is still plenty of good live music around the traps. Sharkys are showcasing a new band dubbed the Clash City Rockers and they will perform this Friday just before the full-on heavy-metal rock of Cartoon Emo. There are two great DJ parties on this same night with the Latino Night at Mao's with DJ Rob Revo and DJ Cool Sam and the second of a series of Donkey Kong parties at Rubies with Dr. Wah Wah.

On Saturday there is also plenty to do, particularly with a performance by KlapYaHandz at Equinox. The totally talented Musikero perform at Mao's as well and DJ Jimmy Salsa will set the dance floor afire at Paddy Rice. Cool! Holliday in Cambodia will perform both nights with there great mix and 3 hour sets.

I will leave you this week with no less than 4 links to download ;o). The first is a totally great song and video from a couple of Danish fellas, one of whom is Nick Jacobsen. Obviously shot in and around Cambodia - I am not altogether sure of it's origins but it is totally worth hooking into - see it here:

The second is another totally cool video produced by Ramon Sanchez Orense. The video features the Grass Snake Union Band and a a gig, from go to whoa, they performed at Equinox. It is backed by a recording of one of the bands songs - totally great. Look out for the band this weekend in Kampot.

The next is a dedication by Lance Thomas and the Teaner Terners to to world's largest land animal. Also look out for this band at the Kampot River Music Festival this weekend.

Lastly an old classic posted by Steve 'Sweet Licks' Goodman on Facebook a couple a days ago. It's not how technically brilliant you are, it's all about the way you lick it! Look out for Steve and Captain Jack as well this weekend.

Have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 16th of June, 2011

EQUINOX - bar cocktails, art gallery, live music, restaurant, pool table, foosball, dancing, rooftop. Open daily from 7:00AM
Hey,

There are still a few tickets remaining for the Kampot River Music Festival. It will be on for 3 days over the full-moon on the banks of the Kampot River in just over 1 week from now. Details on how you can secure tickets for this very unique, totally fun and groovin' event can be seen here: http://www.lengpleng.com/p/kampot-river-music-festival-for-june.html . If you are intending to take the bus down to the festival then please make sure to inform us on which day - you will need to do this before lunchtime on Friday the 17th of June.

A very special week this week in music also because next Tuesday is the 21st of June, and that means it is the northern hemisphere summer solstice, and with it comes the global music celebration which is the Fête de la Musique. This unique festival happens every year on this day and is huge celebration of human creativity and spirituality that comes from through the materialization of music. The festival manifests itself as a series of musical events - both big and small - on the street, in local bars, and in concert halls and is performed in a plethora of musical genre. The Fête de la Musique began more than 30 years ago in France and has since spread across the world. Cambodia is celebrating again this year with 4 special events.

The first event will not occur on Tuesday (!!?? yeah tell me about it!), but on Saturday at the Chenla Theatre. It will feature international jazz-rap duo of 12Mé &  Raph and will be preceded by a series of short performances by a variety of local performers - one of whom will be the Hot Strings Jazz Club - in an open-mic arrangement. Cool! The remaining 3 events all occur on the solstice (Tuesday). The biggest in Phnom Penh will probably be the event at the Memphis Pub where there are over 11 acts on the bill - including top performers such as Cartoon Emo, Sliten6ix and the irrepressible Rock Xpress.  The other special event in Phnom Penh will happen in the garden of CCF starting at 7:00PM. This annual event at this venue always attracts a lot of people and usually has a few surprises. There will be plenty of food and drinks and will also be an open-mic - so all musicians can get down there and get involved. Finally, the CCF is organizing an event for the festival in Siem Reap. This also has more than 11 acts on the bill, including Master Kong Nay, The Cambodian Space Project and the Svay Sor Band. Smokin'!

Before that all happens though, we still have this weekend of musical performances which are just as truly smokin' as those which follow. The MetaHouse continue to treat us with truly international mastery of the Benny Lackner Trio on Thursday - should not be missed. On Friday, Equinox will preview 12Mé & Raph and follow-up with another unique show from the Cambodian Space Project on Saturday. This latter performance will be preceded by an acoustic set that will showcase some of the bands new material.

Friday will also see the introduction of another music venue to the scene with The Score putting on the classic Lost Highway. Captain Jack will perform this same night on the riverfront at Paddy Rice.

Saturday sees another highly anticipated performance by Dub Addiction. They will debut at Mao's. This venue is supporting the live music industry in Cambodia in a big way and I urge you get get down there and support the place. Please feel free to tell the management what you would like to see in terms of live music and DJ gigs and what you believe they can do to really get the place happening.

If you are in Siem Reap for the weekend then don't miss Bum N Draze at the X-Bar on Saturday night.

I will leave you this weekend with a brand new release from Dub Addiction - CLICK HERE. Totally cool mix of ragga-dub put together by Prof Kinski. Enjoy it!

So, until next week, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig-guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 9th of June, 2011

EQUINOX - bar cocktails, art gallery, live music, restaurant, pool table, foosball, dancing, rooftop. Open daily from 7:00AM
Hey,

Coming at you live from the neighborhood of Daun Penh in the heart of downtown Phnom Penh.

As mentioned in last weeks weekly blurb, tickets for the Leng Pleng Kampot River Music Festival are now on sale. The details of how you can get tickets as well as information on how to get to the festival, band schedule and venue location and contacts, can all be see here. More than half the tickets have already been sold, so we urge you not to delay in getting yours.

In this week's gig guide there are two international artists in town that will perform at exclusive events in the capital. The first is international award winning, classical-jazz pianist Gabriele Faja from London, England who debuts at the MetaHouse tonight. This is part of this venue's continuing dedication to Franz Liszt and is a rare opportunity for people based in Phnom Penh. More details in the link below. Entry fee is $5.00.

The second much anticipated arrival to Cambodia's capital is DJ and music producer Diplo from Philadelphia, U.S.A.. Diplo has collaborated with artists like M.I.A., Shakira, Robyn, Kid Cudi, Bruno Mars and Snoop Dogg and was instrumental in putting together Major Lazer - a collaborative music project with Switch. He will be playing at Pontoon this Sunday. Click here to hear samples of his music. Entry is $8 on the door and $6 if you purchase in advance.

Friday sees a Rubies' party with Dr. Wah Wah, and the acoustic tones of Manu at Paddy Rice. Mao's also present the latest offering from Musikero. Cool!

On Saturday night there will be a great gig at Equinox entitled Drums, Bass & Horns. This will be one of the the last performances by the cool yet effervescent Benjamin Clouet from Los Poporks and will involve a number of musicians from this band and the disbanded Mekong Pirates. It promises to be a 'funky jam of musical madness' and should not be missed.

The new band, the Cyclosoniks, played a great couple of sets at the Bong Thom dot Com 11th Year Anniversary Party last weekend and were totally grooving and happening. Totally worth catching these guys at the Alley Cat Café this Saturday at 7:00PM.

Another great gig will be Lost Highway as they return to Phnom Penh from the capital of the northern reaches of Cambodia and play at Mao's. This may also be one of the last times you will be able to catch this classic country-blues-rock outfit as some of the members may be returning back to their country of origin some time soon. They will be on stage this Saturday at around 9:00PM.

Saturday also sees the DJing skills of Fruity at the new Eighty8 venue as well as the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra at Sharkys. This latter gig will also include a lot of beer drinking during a number of competitions they will run for their Beerfest Feast. The competitions have some great prizes plus some special items from the famous Sharky's menu. Should be a totally great night of beer, food and music.

In other news, look out for the Cambodian Space Project and Music Buddies in a village near you as they take the band on the lesser-known roads of Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. The plan is for the musicians to tour the remotest areas in three countries over 50 days and nights and to take the message of peace and happiness that music brings. The project is looking for any advice or suggestions for places you might think are worth visiting - feel free to contact them. More details are available here.

In coming weeks look for Milkteeth from Hong Kong playing at Equinox plus a huge night of music at the Memphis Pub for the Fête de la Musique and Lost Highway playing at a great new venue for music called The Score.

I will leave you this week with a totally great video from UK rapper GobShite, who recently relocated to Cambodia, and really wraps up and lays down his feelings on the status of things as he sees them. It can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URYAQxx1wc4&feature=player_embedded.

As always, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig-guide.
