The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 20th of December, 2012

Hey,

Another huuuuge musical feast coming your way this weekend - it must high season. Especially on the south coast where the live music scene in Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep is on the up and up.

Six gigs on the horizon for those in Sihanoukville this weekend. The great harmonica work of James Cecil hosts the regular Thursday night open-mics at Ritchies Bar this week and every week at this venue. Located right on the beach - a totally cool place to be on a Thursday evening. If you are a musician and you are in Sihanoukville then you should check the whereabouts of the Sihanoukville Music Collective - a band of disparate expat musicians playing a mix of  pop, rock, blues, jazz, and funk apparently. This weekend they are playing are three different venues - The Kuren Bar, the newly opened Otres Market and Dara's Beachside Bar. Check it out.

Metahouse continues to ramp up the DJ mix this weekend and it all starts tonight (Thursday) with a performance by VJ Schkouty, DJ Tonle Dub and Amplifire - featuring electronic mix artiste - Professor Kinski. On Friday the venue hosts a Fusion Party and on Saturday the Invisible Agent label brings you four DJ performers, Dr. Wah Wah, Warren Daly, Chris Bradbury and DJ Wez-T together with a visual show. Cool!

As you may have heard, the world is about to end at midnight (presumably) on the 21st of this month (i.e.: Saturday - don't forget to put a reminder on your phone). There are several venues in party-mode for this so as to make sure that patrons can make sure they get their fair share of alcohol before this relatively tragic event. Equinox has astutely recognized that it is also the winter solstice and are celebrating both events, as well as Nick Kelly's birthday apparently. Pontoon have DJ Eclectik and DJ Ollieple playing, whilst La Croisette will host the Cambodian Space Project as celebration of the official soft re-opening of the venue. Super-cool!

There are several other auspicious gigs on this same night. A new David Bowie Cover band will play at Sharkys this Friday. They are called Station to Station and JJ from the band writes: Taking the stage will be mixture of familiar and new faces on the local music scene - Jet Odrerir (vocals), Smokin' Kenny Smith (bass), Darren Jensen (Keyboards), Julien Mariani  (drums), and JJ on guitar. The set list moves around the early to middle eras of Bowie's catalogue, so if you haven't heard "Let's dance" for a while, "put on your red shoes, and dance the blues" ! Or, help sing along to Fa- Fa-Fa-Fa-Fashion ! More info can be found on the band here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Station-To-Station/453304414704700.

Also on Friday night you can attend the launch of the new album by Gobeshite and DJ DSK at The Doors. Cool!

If you somehow miraculously make it to Saturday then you will be able to be at the return of the totally house-pumping, eclectic reggae-dub band of Dub Addiction to Equinox. A totally great band. You will also be able to see the return of another band to Sharkys - the Lazy Drunks - this time sporting Scott Bywater on lead vocals as regular front man Ian Rowlett Anderson is currently with friends and family in England.

The musical weekend doesn't stop there as there are gigs that occur on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. These gigs in celebration of Christmas festivities.

Coming up look for the elusive Krom as they make another appearance at The Doors. Also, if you are in Siem Reap, the look for a totally great acoustic performer called Mathius who will play at The Warehouse. Check out the following song from Mathius by CLICKING HERE. You can catch more of this performers music at http://www.reverbnation.com/mathiasmusic.

Also (possibly) look for Finnish performer Bon Jouni who may be playing around the traps soon (more details here).

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 13th of December, 2012

Hey,

The local music venues are offering an great variety of live music and DJ gigs  across the country again this week - from House to Funk to classic rock and all the way to Yiddish Klezmer dance.

Metahouse again have three gigs this weekend starting tonight (Thursday) with a mix of live drums from Greg Lavender (Durian, Up Two You Mango + more) and electronic mix artists DJ Flo Trallala and DJ Wez-T. Friday sees the venue traverse the cosmos of House music with DJ Dan Beck and DJ Moodydann and on Saturday night the exquisite, melodic saxophone of Stephane Routier will be joined with the funky spins of DJ Funkeslastiks. A cool set of DJ gigs.

Sharkys celebrate their 17th Anniversary with a great set of gigs this Friday, Saturday and Sunday - all live sets. Friday sees the Kampot Playboys up from the south coast with their great renditions of Khmer 60s rock. On Friday the Curtis King Band returns to the land of wrong-way-drivers with, what will probably be, a night filled with total rock & roll entertainment. Curtis is certainly a guitar and harmonica player who is able to hit the special note combinations at the good times. The same can be said for Smokin' Kenny Smith who is one of the Kingdom's most outstanding exponents of classic Americana country-blues-rock guitar riffs. That is why the combination of Kenny, Curtis and Nikki Buzz and the boys from Play Like Jimi on the Sunday night jam at Sharkys should be something not to miss. There will probably be a long list of other local rock & rock exponents at this gig too - so I totally urge you to get down there and not miss this once-off classic combination.

Play Like Jimi also play in Sihanoukville this weekend with two gigs at the Led Zephyr. Probably the biggest band yet to hit this venue so don't miss it.

Other gigs of note this Friday include a good-wine, acoustic session by Scott Bywater at Rubies as well as the full-on danceable rhythms of Grass Snake Union at the Memphis Pub. Also you can go to see the new layout of La Croisette as Nancy Germany, SexPat Butcher and  The Readers Wives make some big claims to radically shake-up the local music scene. Also see some thigh-slappin' rockabilly tunes by Two Shots & a Chaser at Paddy Rice this same night.

On Saturday Equinox celebrates the holy days of Hanukkah with a what, from all accounts, will be a totally great night of dance in the form of Yiddish music from Eastern Europe. The Sapbai Hanukkah Klezmer Band is a new ensemble and should totally have the place dancing and getting stuck into the kosher wine. Check out some Klezmer music here:

Also on Saturday look for Durian as they follow-up there great return with a gig at the FCC Phnom Penh.

News this week of the passing of one of the legends of alternative 60s pop rock - Ravi Shankar. In celebration of his music and in a continuation of last week's video theme, check out the following 12 minute track.

Also check this totally outstanding video and totally well written and mixed production from The Beards & Julien Poulson. I can almost guarantee that you will be having this song in your head for the rest of the day after watching this video.

Also check THIS great track from the a band playing around the local trap here - Auric Eyes.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 6th of December, 2012

Hey,

Another packed week of music coming our way as we cruise into December.

Scott Bywater (aka Scoddy) will kick off the weekend and a month of Thursday gigs that he will host at the Riverhouse Bar & Bistro. Scoddy tell us to also watch this space for the return of the totally beautiful acoustic Khmer classics from Expresso Thmei - totally looking forward to that. DJ Afro also kicks off the weekend tonight (Thursday) in the first of a series of three DJ events at the Metahouse.

Friday sees the Cambodian Space Project celebrating their 3rd anniversary at the FCC Phnom Penh. This is the first time the band has played at this venue and they will be joined by Chugge Khan. Chugge Khan is a total unique individual an amazing array of musical skills and a totally talented improvisational vocalist. This gig could be a totally great night and a not to be missed unique opportunity. A couple of weeks ago I featured one of his promotional videos (see here) which showcases his talent and connection to an amazing musical vibe. The video below shows his musical roots. Expect something very special when he teams up with the Khmer vocals of Srey Chanthy with the backing of the rest of the band.

On the same night Sharkys present you with a great musical smörgåsbord with three bands - including the return of Squishy. Should be totally grungy, loud and danceable.

If you are in Kampot then you have got to get to the Bodhi Villa on Friday as there is a great double bill with both the Kampot Playboys and Auric Eyes. Totally special.

The huuuuuuge news on Saturday is the much anticipated return of total funk band Durian. The band is now featuring the gorgeous Rhiannon Johnson on funkadelic vocals. Expect a packed house and dance floor. A taste of what to expect can be seen on Chapter 45 of the Tuk-Tuk Sessions web site. The video features the old line-up of the band but it will give you an idea of the total quality you can expect on Saturday night (remember this was all done live in one tuk-tuk).

Also, two anniversaries on this week. On Sunday don't miss the new ensemble Jet and the Alley Cat Strays at the 7th anniversary of the opening of the Alley Cat Cafe. Next Wednesday catch Euan Grey and GTS Jazz as they help celebrate the 12th anniversary of the Riverhouse.

Other gigs to look for are a series of gigs with DJ Martic Dinsdale in Siem Reap where he teams up with the sax players on a couple of occasions. Also, Balgass, early on Friday at Le Jardin as well as gigs at two new music venues - the K'nyay Bar and The Blitz. Also in Siem Reap you can catch the continuation of the tour of Cambodia by Play Like Jimi - the Jimi Hendrix Tribute band. The totally great guitar work and a great set of songs can be heard at Paddy Rice on Friday with Sugar Daddy.

News in also that a moviecalled Bangkok Jam has been selected for the 3rd edition of the Cambodia International Film Festival. The movie will be screened for free at the Platinum Cineplex (5th floor of the Soirya Shopping mall) on Monday, December 10th at 5pm. The film features French punk legend Didier Wampas the lead male role and the female Cambodian bass player Nalen plays the lead actress. The shooting of new scenes for a sequel is planned on the same night at the Sharkys.

The film festival will be opened by music from the Cambodian Space Project at the Legend Cinema on the third floor of City Mall (next to the Olympic Statium on Monireth Blvd) on this Friday at 4:00PM. They will play a fifteen minute rendition of an original soundtrack to the classic Une Voyage Dans La Lune. Cool!

I will leave you this week with another Rajasthani style video. Get into it!

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Starting Friday the 30th of November, 2012

Hey,

A totally happening gig guide this week - especially on Friday when a veritable smörgåsbord of quality gigs is coming our way.

It starts off with an exclusive gig by the elusive Krom who will play a number of songs to celebrate the launch of a new book Phnom Penh Noir . This event will also feature talks by Roland Joffe (director of The Killing Fields) and international author Christopher G. Moore plus others. It happens at the FCC Phnom Penh on Friday but you will need to find a way to get an invite. We have some invites here - so you can contact Leng Pleng if you'd like to join the event. Also, check out Krom's latest video below. It is a haunting traditional Cambodian song which was written shortly after the downfall of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime and the liberation of Phnom Penh in 1979.:

A new venue, the Opera Cafe, is inviting musicians to participate in their Friday night Jazz Jam session. Could be quite cool and worth a look. They are situated on the corner of Streets 13 and 178.

Also this week look for the international Jimi Hendrix tribute band known as Play Like Jimi as they start their Cambodian tour. The band will open their tour at Memphis Pub tonight (Friday) and continue on to Sharkys on Saturday followed by gigs in Siem Reap (X-Bar and The Warehouse) and Sihanoukville (The Led Zephyr). They are a blues-rock band that play classic riffs from the blues-rock era of 40 years ago. They are fronted by full-on blues-rock guitarist Niki Buzz who was stated by Curtis Knight (whom purportedly discovered Jimi Hendrix) as the best guitarist that he had performed with since Jimi Hendrix. Check out this video of Niki Buzz here:

See the band's web site here - http://playlikejimi.com/

The Grass Snake Union are playing in Kampot tonight at the Bodhi Villa. Definitely worth getting to - chilled and right on the river. On Saturday in Kampot you can travel up river a little bit and catch Balgass at The Greenhouse. A totally great way to spend the weekend.

Equinox have two special gigs on this weekend. On Friday they host a Canadian band that originate from Argentina known as Rio Samay. The band will play a range of gypsy-style flamenco and rumba dance tunes. A taste of which is shown below:

On Saturday, the venue will host Auric Eyes. Auric Eyes is a rock band of four members from four different countries, playing original songs and fusing different musical genres such as rock, indie rock, blues, folk, Irish folk and African percussion. The members first met in New Zealand while travelling and busking, and later the band was formed in Brisbane, Australia. They've been in Cambodia for a few weeks now (mainly Siem Reap so far) and are planning to stick around for a few more months. Cool!

There are some cool gigs happening in Siem Reap this weekend too with DJs Tom Tom and Bubble at the X-Bar on Friday night and then the Cambodian Space Project playing at the Asana Wooden House on Saturday night. Also catch saxophonist Steve Cadd and DJ Martin Dinsdale at The Dohgouse later that same night.

Also make sure to get down to see the latest in a series of totally and outrageously fun gigs performed by Up To You Mango at the Riverhouse Bar & Bistro on Wednesday nights. They are in the midst of a campaign run in raising awareness for their NGO. The bio of the NGO from James Speck looks like this:

"Also of interest.....we are now the OFFICIAL band for the new NGO called "StinkY" which is "Save Tarantulas in Kampong Cham You!". The objective is to stop the trafficking and exploitation of underage spiders. To do this we will be raising awareness (the more money you give the more awareness we raise) and we are raising money for a deluxe Lexus SUV and for a soon to be built Italian villa in Kep. where we will set the spiders free in their own air conditioned workshop. In the interest of the best use of funds...we pledge to only bet on "Lucky Number 8 (in Honor of the spiders 8 legs) in Naga World casino. Again...the more money you give ...the more awareness we raise. This is a must-give-all-your-cash-too NGO!!! Stop by on Wednesday night at Riverhouse and GIVE!" .

Sounds like a worthy cause to me.

Also, news in that Dengue Fever have now created their own record label and will make available a series of re-releases. The band writes - "The first two digital releases will include the long out-of-print Eponymous 2003 Debut and the 2005 follow-up Escape from the Dragon House - which features rare  and previously unreleased tracks from band's archive". Cool!

Other gigs of note include Sugar Daddy who will play at Sharkys on Friday night. Also look for Musikero as they return to Paddy Rice.

Coming up is the Cambodian Space Project's 3rd birthday party gig at the FCC Phnom Penh. A special gig that will also feature Chugge Khan. Also the Sapbai Hanukkah Klezmer Band at Equinox and the return of Durian at the same venue.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 15th of November, 2012

Hey,

Totally packed music-wise this weekend. A total of 22 gigs spread over 4 days. Totally cool.

The revamped Phnom Penh Hippie Swingers will open a brand new venue on Street 13 (cnr. 178) called the Opera Cafe. Phil has returned from France to join back up with Ritchy and the duo will be playing a couple of gigs this weekend. The most auspicious of which may be at the VIP lounge at the Beeline Arena on the Chroy Changva peninsular. Their gig will be preceded by an international boxing bout and a concert by a 6-piece Brazilian percussion ensemble called Batucada. That gig happens on Friday. Cool! The MetaHouse and the Riverhouse Lounge are hosting international DJs this Friday with DJ Matt Richardson at the former and DJs Double Tapo Beat Boxer at the Lounge.

A very special gig will be hosted by Kosal Kiev this weekend at both the Java Cafe and a new venue (at least to Leng Pleng) called Show Box. Kosal Kiev aims to show young Khmers in prison a better way to live life through the use of music, poetry and the performing arts. He will be using his own experiences to enable this as well as the great sounds and moves emanating from a host of performers - including Amanda Bloom, Pou Klaing, DJ Peanut, Gobeshite and the Tiny Toones dancers. The gig will raise funds to allow the performer to bring these ideas into the prisons of Cambodia.

On Saturday Dub Addiction will finally return to the stage at Equinox. One of the best bands in the country - no doubt. Get to see them and the packed house at Equinox. Saturday also sees the maligned Bum N Draze launch their latest album The launch will happen at MetaHouse earlier in the evening and then the band will take their performance to Sharkys where the totally great sound from this three-piece hard core rock band extoll the virtues of the new album.

Also this Saturday tune your TV in to CTN at around 7:30PM to see the debut of the band called Krom. The broadcast will include an interview with Krom vocalist Sophea Chamroeun followed by a live performance of 3 songs from the recently released debut album Krom - Songs from the Noir

Other gigs of note include the return of Luna Negra at the FCC Phnom Penh on Saturday night as well as a packed 6-band night of punk at Sharkys on Friday night. Also don't miss Up 2 U Mango featuring Greg Lavender on drums who now play a regular gig every Wednesday at the Riverhouse Bar & Bistro.

Coming up look for the Cambodian Space Project as they team up with Rajesthani gypsy Chugge Khan. Should be a totally excellent show. Check out this video:

Also a couple of tracks made available from DJ Matt Ricahrdson who will appear at the MetaHouse this Friday.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 8th of November, 2012

Hey,

I'm definitely not busy - I got passed busy about 4 days ago. Where I am at in terms of busy-ness there has not been a word in English yet defined. Always got time for the gig guide and the great music coming out of the bars, clubs and restaurants around Cambodia's major urban centers though ;o)

This week sees the return of everyone's favourite son - Scoddy. Fresh off the plane on a sojourn from the cooler climes of France, Scoddy will definitely delight you with his great acoustic renditions of originals and covers from ballads to rhythmy rock&roll. It will almost certainly be a packed house so get down there early. The performance starts at 6:00PM at Rubies Wine Bar.

Elyxir are now also catering to those who enjoy a nice wine, a swimming pool, a relaxing garden and some cool cool jazz. This week they will feature a great line-up featuring the vocals of Rhiannon Johnson. Look for Rhiannon soon too as she has now joined the new line-up of the Durian Funk Band and will play at Equinox early next month. Cool!

For something more rapid, dancey, and bluegrassy see the Grass Snake Union this weekend. Take your pick (or go both nights) as the band will be playing two gigs this weekend - Friday night at Paddy Rice and Saturday night at Equinox. Totally great night with these guys playing.

The Kampot Peppers play Sharkys on Friday. Totally great blues band these guys. Great laid-back rhythms with a totally untroubled feel. If you are in Kampot this weekend then get to the Naga House on Saturday night as the Kampot Playboys together with Rendezvous will be playing. Great atmosphere and right on the river.

If you are in Siem Reap and you like old-time rock & roll then you have got to be at the X-Bar on Friday night at 8:30PM. There is a a charity band called the A-Band touring south-east Asia  and one look at the flyer will tell you why you have got to be there.

Nothing swiped from the Internet this week in terms of videos or MP3s - my apologies. I will try to make up for it next week - but I can't see things slowing down yet.
