The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 19th of April, 2012

Just a quick note to say that we have been experiencing some difficulty with the service provider that hosts some parts of the web site. If some of the details of the gigs are not accessible sometimes then please wait some time and then try again. We are in the throws of changing our host and hope to have it complete soon. Thanks for your consideration in the mean time.

Friday has been well and truly taken over by the DJ scene. The Riverhouse Lounge are totally coming back into the thick of the scene with the presentation of 3 international DJs this week. The best of which is touted as the "UK Godfather Of House" Danny Rampling who starts at 11:00PM. Cool! Even cooler, the venue is offering the first 200 people to receive an exclusive CD mixed personally mixed by the man himself. The gig is supported by DJ Joeki 4Play from Thailand and DJ Ilona from the U.S. You will probably have time to then move onto Pontoon who are presenting the Breakbeat/Electro House  style of international UK artist DJ Adsorb

Saturday sees the Death or Tchi Tchi tour of Bum N Draze continuing at Sharkys. You can always expect an outrageously and unapologetically full-on rock music show from these long-standing, black-punk artistes. Loud and treacherous - so get down there. They will be joined by Sharky Ramone Blitzkrieg.

Other, more light-hearted, shows of note include Holliday in Cambodia at one of the best equipped and managed live music venue in town - Equinox. CamboJam return to the capital all the way from Siem Reap at the FCC Phnom Penh on Saturday evening. Also catch the totally appreciated, totally funkadelic and totally dance-able grooves of Durian at the beautiful Latin Quarter.

At the Memphis Pub they are having a special Night of Khmer Rock - presented by the masters of Khmer Rock themselves Bona Thiem and Rock X-Press. If you haven't managed to catch Bona's fingers working the fretboard at the Memphis Pub yet then I totally encourage you to get to this venue - one of the best and most influential live music venues in town - always a guaranteed great live music experience late into the night. The GhettoBlasters return to Phnom Penh at Pontoon later that same night. Cool!

On Monday you can celebrate St. Georges Day by joining the recently reformed and reformatted Stoned Again (formerly the Stone Daddies) - a Rolling Stones tribute band of some exceptional note. On Wednesday Pontoon will present Grandmaster Flash - by all accounts looks like an awesome gig. Also on Wednesday on Street 144 at the Velkommen Backpackers there will be a brand new open-mic - all musicians welcome to check it out.

Coming up don't miss a brand new monthly arts and music publication known as Skuit - which should hit the streets soon. Also Penhstock III will occur at Sharkys in May - probably the 11th, 12th and 13th - with over 24 local bands on the live music platter.

I will leave you this week with a wrap about the forthcoming album by the Cambodian Space Project entitled Not Easy Rock and Roll. It seems this album has had a lot more time put into the mixing and mastering than the previous album and, although it still has the the definite western backing flavor / Khmer-rock mix for which the band is famous, many of the covers also manage to capture the sounds and feel generated by the original performers of this genre from the 60s and 70s. As mentioned in previous issues, it features the totally great vocals and natural performance of Srey Thy, however this album is also of great credit to the album's producer (and band's lead guitarist) Julien Poulson as well as to the work of Sarin Choun and Kong Boran of Cambodian Living Arts in Phnom Penh and of Lindsay Gravina and Rob Long at Birdland Studios in Australia. To be able to re-create such an auspicious era of sound in such a fundamental way deserves much accolade. They have managed to produce something that could be held up as a centerpiece of artistic recreation and musical fusion and should be looked back upon as one of the best celebratory albums of Khmer 60s rock music.

From Ted and I here in the back Streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig-guide.

  1. Your band list makes me so excited to head there the soonest possible time and party with friends. It's like I'm at the Long Island live music club whenever I go here.
