The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 14th of June, 2012

Another great long weekend of music again this week - well at least it is for Ted and I - it is always hard to figure out what is happening with these holidays and who gets the days off. There are a few returning bands as well as some leavers - always the case in a country such a transient expat population.

The bad news is that the totally funkadellic outfit of Durian, that has wowed audiences over the past year around Phnom Penh, is about to call it a day. As mentioned such losses to the local music scene are difficult to avoid and so you are just going to have to make the best of what you can get when it is available. The concession to this sad departure is that the band will be performing a huge send off this Friday at Equinox. A great show is assured. I totally urge you to get up, get out and step up to Equinox this Friday.

The much anticipated return of the countries biggest roots-a-billy, folk band will occur at this same venue on Saturday night with the Grass Snake Union. The promo goes like this:
New insanely good band members, new instruments (did someone say, 'mandolin?'), special guests, pickin', singin' and a stompin'. Don't miss it. Sleep 'til noon on Saturday and then come ready to get folked-up. Do it! This is gong to be one hell of a musical weekend in Phnom Penh. Are you ready?

It will be yet another totally great time by one of Phnom Penh's best music venues.

Friday night at Sharkys sees a different return for Holliday In Cambodia - with a fully electrified line-up instead of their normal acoustic set up. Bolstered by the punchy bass lines of former Teaner Terner (Jimmy), the evening promises to be a great night of popular rock/pop tunes (old and new.)

Saturday night sees the surprise return of Little Duke & The Mekong Blues Messengers. Spurred on no doubt by their recent cracking performance at Penhstock 3, the guys have decided to blow us away once more with their powerhouse Chicago Blues. The band's performances are somewhat few and far between these days, however, Saturday night should be a great chance to catch this band and see one of the great blues guitar players in the region - no other than Jonas Hastings (a.k.a Little Duke.). Don't Miss It ! Show starts 9pm.

Ritchy & Phil and friends are out again this weekend at the Bouchon Bar (Friday) and the Red Apron (Saturday). Always a quality act and always something new.

Huge stuff coming up too. Not the least of which will be the last couple of shows by the Cambodian Space Project before they head off to London and the other exotic European destinations. The most auspicious of these will occur next Sunday when the band hosts a fund raising event for the Buck Hunger. This small organization aims to provide free food to those that need it most. It is run by a fellow by the name of Johnny Philips, who worked in the commercial food and beverage industry for over 30 years before coming to Cambodia and feeding the poor and hungry. The band will aim to raise awareness, money and support to keep the doors open by putting on this great street party. The band has invited many other musicians from around the local music scene - so expect a totally awesome time. Johnny is also looking for other contributers to help put the event on and you can contact him using the email address at their web site - http://buckhunger.com/ . Please help if you feel you can.

Also, the Fete de la Musique is on next week. There is the great annual event that happens at Memphis for the event and this year they will feature a great array of bands. Totally looking forward to it.

Before we go a couple of great videos. The first is a totally superb piece put together for Professor Kinski & MC Curley by Marc Eberle and edited by Jean Mathis. If you ever look at only one video via the Leng Pleng newsletter then I totally urge you to make this the one. Great stuff by all those concerned. Share it with your friends.

Also, see the Cambodian Space Project's latest video put together by K.M. Lo and Julien Poulson. This version of the song Bang! Bang! I'm Afraid of Love and was shot on the streets of Macau. The song started from the pen of Sonny Bono (of all people!) in 1966 and was covered, and made famous by Nancy Sinatra that same year. The dark beauty of the song was not lost on Pan Ron who sang the Cambodian created version not long after. A great piece from the band's wonderful forthcoming album.

Lastly, a video released from the Buck Hunger people.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weekends gig-guide.
