The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Friday the 31st of August, 2012

A multitude of quality gigs again this weekend. We will be welcoming back some performers, saying bye-for-now to others and enjoying the expansion and re-mixing of still others.

The far-reaching appeal of the Khmer 60s rock reaches new ground this week with the release of a feature article in a one of Sweden's largest newspapers - the Svenska Dagbladet (CLICK HERE - you might have to use Google Translate to get a translation). The article talks about the genre in general but also extols the great sounds emanating from Kampot and, in particular, the Kampot Playboys

Anyone witnessing the band at Equinox last week can vouch for the great sound and totally dance-able rhythms. In fact they are not limited to the Khmer 60s rock and play a range of traditional tunes as well as touching on western pop and rock with a unique Cambodian flavor. The great vocals and presence of Cheat up the front makes sure of that, and his energy fills the crowd with the essence of the rock culture - Cambodian style ;o). He is backed with a great array of rocking beats and dance-able rhythms and, last Saturday at least, featured a totally cool and happening horn section. If you missed the boys last weekend then - no problem - you can either catch them again this week at two venues (The Willow and the Spirit House) or see the video of the gig made available via the courtesy of Equinox (CLICK HERE). With the same link, you will also be able to catch the great debut performance of Conrad Keely and his new band Rendezvous who will also play the Willow this Friday. You will need to click well into the video (over 1.5 hours) before the music starts.

That second gig at the Spirit House starts at 5:00PM on Sunday and will also feature members of Durian - probably my most recommended gig of the week. The Spirit House is located right on the river across the Japanese Bridge. Patrons who reminisce over Maxine's (Snow's Bar) of a couple of years ago will appreciate the venue as it is in a similar area - but this time north of the Japanese bridge rather than south. Cool!

Sharkys will be a great place to be on Saturday night with some of the countries newest, best and biggest Punk performers on stage. Be ready for a high-energy, riotous night of full-on rock and punk. In the words of Laura J Snook "....expect the best of old-school Brit punk, Oi! and a big shout-out to the Putin-clobbering Pussy Riot!". Sounds totally awesome to me - you might have to stock up on some Sticky Fingers T-shirts before you head to the venue. Laura will head up the 8-member Shambolic69 who will feature in between Tango & Snatch (who opens the show) and Bob P and the Lop Lops. Note the gig starts at the earlier time of 8:00PM.
Punters in Sihanoukville this weekend will have the chance to see two performances at the Led Zephyr this weekend. The first, on Friday night, will be Stoned Again with Saturday night being followed up by Muscle of Love. Both performances are supported by local guy Roger de la Paz. Catch it if you are in town.

The other huge news is the return of the Cambodian Space Project, who will re-enter the Phnom Penh atmosphere at Equinox this weekend. It should be great to see the new collection of songs back at one of the band's original venues. The band returns from a successful tour with performances in Spain, France and England.

A very special DJ and live music gig will also occur on Friday night at Pontoon this weekend. For those who may not know, local Hip-Hop dub-artist MC Lisha will head to the east coast of the United States to be part of the U.S. State Department sponsored cultural exchange event named OneBeat. The month long tour will see MC Lisha join other artists from 21 other countries (see details here). The event at Pontoon will feature a mix some top performers in a celebration of the artists opportunity. Cool!

Other gigs of note this weekend include the KL Piano Trio for classical music lovers, as well as the Meta Sessions that continue to extol the totally cool and eclectic nature of the DJ scene at MetaHouse on Saturday night - billed as "the best in electronic sounds, hip hop, bass, house, disco/nu disco and cutting edge party music of the highest distinction". Also, a new gig at the Cadillac Bar debuts next Wednesday with the classic acoustic duo of Sugar Daddy. Definitely a great vibe created by these two accomplished musicians. This coming Saturday in Siem Reap Cambojam will host an Open Mic at the Banana Leaf. It will be the bands 50th time they have played at the venue and will be the very last with singer KC who is heading back to Philippines.

In other news, and as testament to the growing influence of the local music scene, local creative band Krom has released news that the band has now been commissioned to compose soundtrack for Australian - Khmer documentary “In search of Camp 32, a journey back to year zero.” For more information about “In search of Camp 32”, CLICK HERE   and HERE. Smokin'!

This week I leave you with the sounds of the Prey Veng rooster and the Cambodian Space Project and their rendition of the classic Don't Say You Love Me - featuring some totally great sax.

Also, check-out this great video from the Vietnam-based Wunderlusters who are looking to do a tour of Cambodia later this year. The band is led by former Phnom Penh resident Davis Zunk who many of you may recognize in the video.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
