The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 20th of September, 2012

Hey,

A great set of music again this weekend. We are totally in the middle of the main part of the wet season so expect lots of rain - but don't let that put you off form getting out and about.

This weekend sees Equinox, Tchou Tchou School and The Greenhouse hosting a very special series of gigs indeed. The venues will present the international French duo of 12em & Raph, UK rapper Gobeshite, Khmer rock space-trippers the Cambodian Space Project and other local musicians and artists over a 4-part series of gigs. The gigs are an effort to support the Playing for a Change foundation. The Playing For Change Foundation is dedicated to creating positive change through music education by developing music schools and programs around the world.

The special series of gigs starts on Friday night at Equinox with a great combination of hip-hop and saxophone from 12em & Raph. The guys will be joined by Gobeshite and will thus form a totally special atmosphere that will be abundant with cool backing melodies and rhythmical poetry. This gig will be preceded by the screening of videos that will show more about the Playing For Change Foundation. Worth checking out.

Part 2 of the special weekend will happen at the Tchou Tchou School at 12:00 noon on the next day (Saturday). It will be a performance by the Cambodian Space Project that will be followed up by a jam with the band and other local musicians. Should be a rather exceptional eclectic mix of local and western music. Following this performance there will be a bus leaving from the venue to Kampot. You might want to be on the bus because you will be able to catch part 3 of the weekend.

Part 3 will see the jazzy hip-hop of 12em & Raph combine with the spacey rock of the Cambodian Space Project on Saturday night at The Greenhouse in Kampot. The concert and inevitable party will go to the wee small hours of the night no doubt. This will also be preceded by the Playing for a Change videos.

Part 4, and the concluding part of the weekend, will occur the next day (Sunday) at lunchtime on the river as The Greenhouse puts on their weekly jam session and BBQ. This will include a great mix of local Potpat and Phnom Penhian musicians as well as visiting International artists and most likely continue for most of the afternoon. Don't forget your swimming costumes because the river is totally worth getting into. The bus will return to Phnom Penh at 6:00PM. Please contact the guys at Equinox for more details on this special weekend.

Returning the wrap to Phnom Penh, Bum N' Draze performed a totally energized performance of great metal-inspired quality last week at La Croisette's demolition party. They will hit the stage again this Friday at Sharkys. One of the longest surviving expat bands in the country, they would have to be one of the best exponents of this genre in the country. They have a great aggressive stage presence that totally infiltrates and motivates the audience and it's all done with just the bass, drums and guitar - a total boon for the local music scene. On Saturday at the same venue catch the Kampot Playboys and their awesome renditions and their full-on horn section.Cool!

Earlier on Saturday in the capital the band at the Red Apron turns to a four-piece with the return of Euan Grey and Lewis Pragasam as they join Seb Adnot  and Ritchy Boisson. Totally worth catching the great music at this venue.

In Sihanoukville this weekend there are a couple of totally great gigs happening. Saturday sees the entrance of MC Curley & Professor Kinski at the Samdan (NGO Mlop Tapang Application Restaurant, 100m from the golden lions). They will play a range of electronic mixed tracks with Khmer dub and totally cool and bouncy back-beat. On Sunday at 8:00PM The Schkoots will be in town and combine together with local legend Bob Passion to play at a music venue that is new to this gig guide - the Space Cat. The band will be j oined by Khmer-Indie rock exponent Su. Smokin'!

Other gigs of note include a brand new band to Cambodia that hits the capital this weekend. They are a high-energy, dance-able, Latin ensemble known as Luna Negra and they play at The Latin Quarter on Saturday night. Also the live music continues at Paddy Rice again this week with the great Celtic sounds of Kheltica. Cool!

I will leave you this week with a series of videos aiming to inspire you to join the Playing for a Change gigs this weekend.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
