The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Starting Friday the 30th of November, 2012

A totally happening gig guide this week - especially on Friday when a veritable smörgåsbord of quality gigs is coming our way.

It starts off with an exclusive gig by the elusive Krom who will play a number of songs to celebrate the launch of a new book Phnom Penh Noir . This event will also feature talks by Roland Joffe (director of The Killing Fields) and international author Christopher G. Moore plus others. It happens at the FCC Phnom Penh on Friday but you will need to find a way to get an invite. We have some invites here - so you can contact Leng Pleng if you'd like to join the event. Also, check out Krom's latest video below. It is a haunting traditional Cambodian song which was written shortly after the downfall of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime and the liberation of Phnom Penh in 1979.:

A new venue, the Opera Cafe, is inviting musicians to participate in their Friday night Jazz Jam session. Could be quite cool and worth a look. They are situated on the corner of Streets 13 and 178.

Also this week look for the international Jimi Hendrix tribute band known as Play Like Jimi as they start their Cambodian tour. The band will open their tour at Memphis Pub tonight (Friday) and continue on to Sharkys on Saturday followed by gigs in Siem Reap (X-Bar and The Warehouse) and Sihanoukville (The Led Zephyr). They are a blues-rock band that play classic riffs from the blues-rock era of 40 years ago. They are fronted by full-on blues-rock guitarist Niki Buzz who was stated by Curtis Knight (whom purportedly discovered Jimi Hendrix) as the best guitarist that he had performed with since Jimi Hendrix. Check out this video of Niki Buzz here:

The Grass Snake Union are playing in Kampot tonight at the Bodhi Villa. Definitely worth getting to - chilled and right on the river. On Saturday in Kampot you can travel up river a little bit and catch Balgass at The Greenhouse. A totally great way to spend the weekend.

Equinox have two special gigs on this weekend. On Friday they host a Canadian band that originate from Argentina known as Rio Samay. The band will play a range of gypsy-style flamenco and rumba dance tunes. A taste of which is shown below:

On Saturday, the venue will host Auric Eyes. Auric Eyes is a rock band of four members from four different countries, playing original songs and fusing different musical genres such as rock, indie rock, blues, folk, Irish folk and African percussion. The members first met in New Zealand while travelling and busking, and later the band was formed in Brisbane, Australia. They've been in Cambodia for a few weeks now (mainly Siem Reap so far) and are planning to stick around for a few more months. Cool!

There are some cool gigs happening in Siem Reap this weekend too with DJs Tom Tom and Bubble at the X-Bar on Friday night and then the Cambodian Space Project playing at the Asana Wooden House on Saturday night. Also catch saxophonist Steve Cadd and DJ Martin Dinsdale at The Dohgouse later that same night.

Also make sure to get down to see the latest in a series of totally and outrageously fun gigs performed by Up To You Mango at the Riverhouse Bar & Bistro on Wednesday nights. They are in the midst of a campaign run in raising awareness for their NGO. The bio of the NGO from James Speck looks like this:

"Also of interest.....we are now the OFFICIAL band for the new NGO called "StinkY" which is "Save Tarantulas in Kampong Cham You!". The objective is to stop the trafficking and exploitation of underage spiders. To do this we will be raising awareness (the more money you give the more awareness we raise) and we are raising money for a deluxe Lexus SUV and for a soon to be built Italian villa in Kep. where we will set the spiders free in their own air conditioned workshop. In the interest of the best use of funds...we pledge to only bet on "Lucky Number 8 (in Honor of the spiders 8 legs) in Naga World casino. Again...the more money you give ...the more awareness we raise. This is a must-give-all-your-cash-too NGO!!! Stop by on Wednesday night at Riverhouse and GIVE!" .

Sounds like a worthy cause to me.

Also, news in that Dengue Fever have now created their own record label and will make available a series of re-releases. The band writes - "The first two digital releases will include the long out-of-print Eponymous 2003 Debut and the 2005 follow-up Escape from the Dragon House - which features rare  and previously unreleased tracks from band's archive". Cool!

Other gigs of note include Sugar Daddy who will play at Sharkys on Friday night. Also look for Musikero as they return to Paddy Rice.

Coming up is the Cambodian Space Project's 3rd birthday party gig at the FCC Phnom Penh. A special gig that will also feature Chugge Khan. Also the Sapbai Hanukkah Klezmer Band at Equinox and the return of Durian at the same venue.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
