The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 23rd of February, 2012

Hey,

Another very brief blurb again this week as we head into the weekend of DJ party mix and live bands around Cambodia.

Tonight sees the return of Professor Kinski to the MetaHouse together with Nick Klapperton. The Cotton Club and the Do It All club step up the DJ mix with special party nights this week.

Equinox has a great couple of gigs this weekend, firstly with Billy Page and TJ Brown on Friday followed by a huge Saturday night with international electronic-mix musicians and dub artists Will & the People *, Gobshite* and Prolyfik*. The show will also inlude a set by DJ K'Dam. Totally cool!

Also, if you can get to Khmarnaval this weekend you can catch the Kampot Playboys and Dub Addicition on Saturday night. Also look for Dub Addiction at Gasolina in the Coming Up section

I leave you with the another beautiful, haunting ballad from Krom. It is from their forthcoming album Songs from the Noir and is entitled "Don't Go Away". It is one of the best releases from the album so far. The song features Jimmy Baeck (from The Helhounds and Durian) on slide guitar.

Have a great time this weekend and see you around the traps.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 9th of February, 2012

Hey,

A packed weekend this weekend with some very special gigs - so hold on tight for this weeks wrap of the local live music and DJ gigs.

The much anticipated return of local Blues-Rock legends Route 66 happens at several venues this weekend. Tonight they are playing at The Cavern, Friday at The Score and Saturday at The Red Orchid. It should be a very special series of gigs as the boys get together one more time now the LA Larry is back in town.

Most of you would have received our special email we sent yesterday of a special interview we spent with Jerry Joseph. If you did not receive it in your inbox then CLICK HERE to get the rundown. A very special man indeed with a very special couple of gigs this weekend. He plays, together with Frank Ruffolo, at Equinox this Friday and at the FCC Phnom Penh on Saturday night. Should be HUGE!

Friday also see international DJ artist Jaguar Skills hit town. This gig is at Pontoon and will start at 1:00AM. Jaguar Skills is not really known to me all that much because I am out of the loop in his regard but anyway he has just under 70,000 likes (!!!!) on his Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/djjaguarskills?sk=info) and is a regular DJ for BBC Radio One in England - so their is no doubting his popularity. By the way, if you feel like you have the 'skills' needed to do a weekly wrap of the local DJ scene in Cambodia then please contact me - we send out to more than 5,500+ people every week and we would really appreciate a proper wrap every week.

A totally special gig will happen on Saturday afternoon in Kampong Chhnang at about 55KM from Phnom Penh - in fact a Ka Ort Village, Kompong Tralach District, Kompong Chhnang Province (55km outside PP on National Road #5, take left turn at Sala Leek 5 Market). It is part of the Opening Doors Village Tour conducted by Marcel Crompvoets and involving Kong Boran, Conrad Keely and the Kampot Playboys. This tour has been happening since the 4th of February at various villages around southern Cambodia and aims to “bring the music to the people” who would not otherwise have access to live music or cultural activities. The tour culminates this weekend Ka Ort Village and will probably also include other special guest performers, such as Amanda Bloom. Very special gig indeed and worth the short trip out there to be part of it. A press release for the tour can be downloaded HERE.

Two more special gigs this weekend. The first will be the last of the final performances ever put together by Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers at Sharkys. A great band with a totally talented and professional line-up. Get down there to send the band off. The second is the return of Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra who will be playing at Equinox. Cool!

The week's gigs are wrapped up by Valentine's day specials on Tuesday at both Pontoon with DJ Illest and the Harem Shisha Lounge with DJ Alladin Sane. Also cool!

Also news this week of Krom's latest release ” Where are you?” featuring vocalist Sophea Chamroeun has premiered on two Cambodian TV stations - TV 5 and My TV - with the song now on the stations' regular play lists. Some of the contributers to the band are listed HERE.

The changes and updates to the Regular Gigs section of the Leng Pleng web site continues this week with news of Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at the Coolabah Hotel. Located near Ocheuteal Beach, just down the road from the Led Zephyr, the venue offers a swimming pool and mainly acoustic sets - Sundays featuring Billy Page. The Led Zephyr also has regular music - most nights with the totally professional trio Big Time and on Tuesdays with harmonica maestro James Cecil from Canada

Coming up next week in Sihanoukville don't miss this year's Khmarnaval street parade. A totally great spectacle organized by Bob Passion in support of the local street kids. This year it will feature two of the countries hottest fusion bands - Dub Addiction and the Kampot Playboys. Scccchhhhuuuuper cooool!

OK, I will leave you this week with a couple of videos from the two said bands of the last paragraph. The first is Dub Addiction in a recent gig at Equinox. The second is the Kampot Playboys taken just a few days ago during their current tour.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 3rd of February, 2012

Hey,

Another quick wrap of the local music scene to take you way into the first weekend of the second month of the year (already!). I don't know where the time goes sometimes. Anyway there is a veritable feast of music available for punters again this weekend.

The hottest reggae-ragga-dub band in the country, Dub Addiction, will be busy this weekend. They are playing at the Greenhouse in Kampot on Friday night. This venue is right on the river under the shadow of Phnom Bokor. It is a totally brilliant setting and promises to be an outrageously great time for all attendees. The band will return to Phnom Penh the next day to play through the countries best kept sound-system - Equinox. A totally pumping night is guaranteed.

Equinox has a totally great weekend for everyone with Durian playing at the venue on Friday night. The 8-member funk band will absolutely pump the place with full-on funk and rhythm. A great band to which to dance. Get there!

Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers have surprised everyone with a couple of return gigs this weekend in Sihanoukville. The future of the band is not certain due to the work commitments of a couple of the members, however it the band has reformed to take their blend of Chicago blues to the south coast. They will play at the Led Zephyr both Friday and Saturday nights. Well worth getting down for the weekend - might be one of the last times you can get to see this totally professional band. (With a bit of planning any punter could catch Dub Addiction in Kampot on the Friday night and Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers on the Saturday in Sihanoukville.)

The Lazy Drunks are the third band this weekend to have a couple of gigs - the first is at Sharkys on the Friday night and the second is at the Velkommen Backpackers on Saturday. Velkommen Backpackers is new to the music scene and is looking to have regular gigs over the coming months. Great place to meet new faces, have a good cheap cold beer and to listen to some classic rock from the local masters.

Late into Saturday night you can get to the Do It All Club on Street 174. They are having a HUGE party this weekend with DJ Achayer, DJ Wye and DJ Flow. Look for the venue on Friday night too now as they host their regular Afro-Latino Party with DJ Alcohol.

Another very busy band is the GTS Jazz Mesh who are now a five piece as, not only do they have their wonderful bass player Sebastian Adnot back on double-bass after his hiatus due to a couple of broken fingers, but they also welcome Kaë Lhassàn. Kaë is a jazz vocalist from France and will join the band for their series of weekly gigs at K-West and Sofitel Le Royal (see the regular gigs section for the details). They play Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Le Royal and Thursday nights at the bar at the top of K-West called Le Moon. The Thursday gig is a Jazz Jam Session so please feel welcome to come down and play as well as enjoying the atmosphere and music. Totally cool!

There is also a new series of regular gigs emanating from the Top Banana on Street 278. On Tuesdays there is an Acoustic Night with Jimmy James and on Friday nights there is Friday Funky Electro with DJ BASSBENDeR. On Saturday nights you can take the Lime Boat Party with DJ BASSBENDeR starting at 5:00PM. See the regular gigs section for details.

Coming up next week don't miss our one-off interview with the original man of psychedelic reggae Jerry Joseph. Jerry is a man with an amazing history, a lot of great stories and a totally great demeanor. Well worth tuning into this one next week as a prelude to his gigs with Frank Ruffolo.

Also look for the return of Route 66 as Las Vegas Larry, Tommy Nick, Smokin' Kenny Smith and Chris Hilleary hit town next week. They will play at The Score. Billy Page also returns to the FCC Phnom Penh.

I will leave you this week with an amateur video shot at the Cadillac Bar in Phnom Penh in November last year. It features the amicable and outstandingly talented Conrad Keely together with Matt Dwyer as they do a wonderful cover of Red Cadillac and a Black Moustache. See it below.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Daun Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. here's this weeks gig guide.
