The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 3rd of May, 2012

Hey,

The Cabaret Francophone is on tonight and is an open-mic arrangement, which requires you to register beforehand. It will be the last one for some time. Alternatively there is the Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam at Paddy Rice which often boasts some of the local music scenes best performers (see the regular gigs section for details on that one).

Friday sees the regular Lazy Drunks at Sharkys and the Cambodian Space Project's last show before heading to Hong Kong. Also, up in Siem Reap, you can catch some live music at Molly Malones this Friday. It is a new ensemble (to this blog at least) called Rhythm Conspiracy.

Saturday is pretty much packed - mostly with DJ gigs but also a couple of special live music gigs. A huge gig at Pontoon features on Saturday night. It includes the best of the local hip-hop dance and rap scene with Tiny Toones and KlapYaHandz together with DJs Hydrophonics and Tech 12 and international artists Gobshite and Akil the MC. It will be totally great - so make sure to be a in attendance.

Also the same night in Siem Reap, Cambojam will help the Under Construction Bar to celebrate their 1st anniversary - always a lot of fun and great quality music. Members of the Cambodian Space Project will combine in a new configuration to form the Mexicano Space Guerrillas at the Alley Cat early on Saturday night. Later on at Sharkys catch Stoned Again with special guest Curtis King. On Sunday catch the return of Syse Swing at Le Jardin.

Coming up look for the huge annual event which Penhstock. The third installation of the musical fest will occur at Sharkys next weekend from the 11th to the 13th of May and will feature an eclectic mix of over 20 bands. Always a great buzz over this event.

Leaving you this week with a great track sent to me all the way from the UK from Martin Armstrong (The Choppers). Check it out.

Also a taste of what's to come at Pontoon this Saturday night with this Frank Zappa-esque track featuring Akil the MC.

Finally a little mix of totally out there poetry and music from Scoddy.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 26th of April, 2012

Hey,

Well, it's Friday night that offers local music enthusiasts their greatest choice this weekend with 8 gigs but Saturday is not far behind with 7 with a couple of gigs finishing off the weekend on Sunday.

Friday sees a special gig at The Willow when Amanda Bloom once again teams up with the roots/folk quartet of the Kampot Playboys. This same combination played together at the MetaHouse some weeks back and were totally cool - despite the venue's terrible acoustics. Given a venue with good acoustics I would could imagine a totally outstanding performance.

The Teaner Terners are back in the capital this weekend and are raring it up for two totally smokin' gigs this weekend. The first happens at Equinox  on Friday and it will be packed and pumping. On Saturday the band moves across town to do a benefit gig for the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center.

This second event actually starts on the Friday with the return of the much missed Rolling Stones tribute band and recently renamed Stoned Again (formerly Captain Jack, formerly the Stone Daddies). Fans of the original band will not be disappointed with the great work of JJ on guitar and Chick Jagger out the front on vocals. The band will be ably supported by the brand new all-girl band - the Herding Cats. A total musical feast as well as some prizes to be won and auctioned off apparently.

Saturday see's another special gig by the totally wonderful duo of Ritchy & Phil. They will appear at the Red Apron at the earlier time of 7:00PM. they will be presenting a "sweet Brazilian jazz mood celebrating the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Joao Gilberto & Ivan Lins". Cool! Later on that evening you can dance the floor at Equinox as the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra return with their unique blend of eastern European folk - presented to you with up to 10 instruments or more.

On Sunday you might want to get down to the Riverhouse Bar & Bistro who are presenting a great ensemble which has recently be gaining in popularity. It is the Euan Gray Band and features Australian saxophonist and songwriter Euan Gray together with the members of GTS Jazz. Very much worth a Sunday evening wine or 2.

Lookout for coming gigs with a HUGE gig at Pontoon featuring Gobshite, KlapYaHandz and Tiny Toones as well as several international DJs. The Alley Cat Cafe will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo on the 5th of May with a special outfit of the CSP. Also, all musicians are reminded about the Musicians Sessions at Equinox on the first Monday of every month (click here for details).

I will leave you this week with another totally great video by Gobshite - totally well put together:

Also, most of you with the right contacts on Facebook would have seen this video already, however I include the extended version here just in case you haven't. It is the latest video by the band and is of their original song  Have Visa No Have Rice and features excerpts from Bum N Draze and their original 'release' called Sickville.

Also, a SoundCloud mix tape track from DJ Illest from 2011.

Also, another SoundCloud track from Gobshite and Disebeats.

Finally a tribute to the passing this week of Levon Helm.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig-guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 19th of April, 2012

Hey,

Just a quick note to say that we have been experiencing some difficulty with the service provider that hosts some parts of the web site. If some of the details of the gigs are not accessible sometimes then please wait some time and then try again. We are in the throws of changing our host and hope to have it complete soon. Thanks for your consideration in the mean time.

Friday has been well and truly taken over by the DJ scene. The Riverhouse Lounge are totally coming back into the thick of the scene with the presentation of 3 international DJs this week. The best of which is touted as the "UK Godfather Of House" Danny Rampling who starts at 11:00PM. Cool! Even cooler, the venue is offering the first 200 people to receive an exclusive CD mixed personally mixed by the man himself. The gig is supported by DJ Joeki 4Play from Thailand and DJ Ilona from the U.S. You will probably have time to then move onto Pontoon who are presenting the Breakbeat/Electro House  style of international UK artist DJ Adsorb

Saturday sees the Death or Tchi Tchi tour of Bum N Draze continuing at Sharkys. You can always expect an outrageously and unapologetically full-on rock music show from these long-standing, black-punk artistes. Loud and treacherous - so get down there. They will be joined by Sharky Ramone Blitzkrieg.

Other, more light-hearted, shows of note include Holliday in Cambodia at one of the best equipped and managed live music venue in town - Equinox. CamboJam return to the capital all the way from Siem Reap at the FCC Phnom Penh on Saturday evening. Also catch the totally appreciated, totally funkadelic and totally dance-able grooves of Durian at the beautiful Latin Quarter.

At the Memphis Pub they are having a special Night of Khmer Rock - presented by the masters of Khmer Rock themselves Bona Thiem and Rock X-Press. If you haven't managed to catch Bona's fingers working the fretboard at the Memphis Pub yet then I totally encourage you to get to this venue - one of the best and most influential live music venues in town - always a guaranteed great live music experience late into the night. The GhettoBlasters return to Phnom Penh at Pontoon later that same night. Cool!

On Monday you can celebrate St. Georges Day by joining the recently reformed and reformatted Stoned Again (formerly the Stone Daddies) - a Rolling Stones tribute band of some exceptional note. On Wednesday Pontoon will present Grandmaster Flash - by all accounts looks like an awesome gig. Also on Wednesday on Street 144 at the Velkommen Backpackers there will be a brand new open-mic - all musicians welcome to check it out.

Coming up don't miss a brand new monthly arts and music publication known as Skuit - which should hit the streets soon. Also Penhstock III will occur at Sharkys in May - probably the 11th, 12th and 13th - with over 24 local bands on the live music platter.

I will leave you this week with a wrap about the forthcoming album by the Cambodian Space Project entitled Not Easy Rock and Roll. It seems this album has had a lot more time put into the mixing and mastering than the previous album and, although it still has the the definite western backing flavor / Khmer-rock mix for which the band is famous, many of the covers also manage to capture the sounds and feel generated by the original performers of this genre from the 60s and 70s. As mentioned in previous issues, it features the totally great vocals and natural performance of Srey Thy, however this album is also of great credit to the album's producer (and band's lead guitarist) Julien Poulson as well as to the work of Sarin Choun and Kong Boran of Cambodian Living Arts in Phnom Penh and of Lindsay Gravina and Rob Long at Birdland Studios in Australia. To be able to re-create such an auspicious era of sound in such a fundamental way deserves much accolade. They have managed to produce something that could be held up as a centerpiece of artistic recreation and musical fusion and should be looked back upon as one of the best celebratory albums of Khmer 60s rock music.

From Ted and I here in the back Streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig-guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 12th of April, 2012

Hey,

A quick look at this week's gig guide will tell you that is is a holiday this weekend. By Monday next week the land of the Khmer's would have welcomed in the year of the Dragon and local people will be filtering back to their homes from their extended provincial celebrations.

For those of us still in the capital for the weekend, there are only two live music events scheduled this week. The first is the Lazy Drunks at the Velkommen Backpackers. It will be another totally full and friendly, beer swigging night of classic British and U.S. rock & roll from one of the longest running local bands. Definitely worth a look in if you are in town. Cheap beer and good food can be consumed as you enjoy the nights' entertainment. They are located about 200m from the riverfront on Street 144. Also on Friday night, Paddy Rice are featuring The Divas playing soul and R&B apparently.

When I say there are only 2 live music gigs - that is, of course, if you don't count the regular weekly gigs. Tonight's Paddy Rice Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam should be something quite special as it will be a huge send-off for one of the local expat music scene's best loved guitar players. I speak of Stevie 'Sweet Licks' Goodman and he will be in action at the venue's weekly open-mic tonight (Thursday). Steve has played with a number of bands around town and you will know him from several locally famous ensembles, such as the Taxi Guys, The Mekong Messengers, The Hellhounds, The Beer O'Clock Boys, and The Stone Daddies. Steve has been playing around the traps in Phnom Penh for many years and his totally sweet licks and booming vocals will be sorely missed. The Paddy Rice open-mic is probably the most well attended event of it's type in the capital. So get down there tonight.

The most auspicious Khmer New Year event will occur in Sihanoukville this weekend. It is being put on by the so called Sihanoukville Party People (see https://www.facebook.com/groups/238338909577870/), runs for 3 days and involves some of the country's best known DJs - Rob Little, Dr House, DJ El Kay,  DJ Flo Trallala, DJ Achaya, Lefty Stryker, DJ Papa K and Marcus Mikus. Cool! CLICK HERE for a map to the event.

Other events touted for the new year celebrations also happen at the Riverhouse Lounge tonight and with DJ Illest at Pontoon on Saturday night.

I have a few videos and MP3 downloads this week. The first is selection of traditional songs that are always heard on the streets and around the parties and Karaoke machines at Khmer New year.

Next is video clip from a HUGE Australian band called Short Stack. The video was shot in and around Kampot early last year.

The next is a video of a person whom you might recognize from the local music scene and was taken at a recent gig in Paris:

Lastly a new set of tracks released by KlapYaHandz featuring the great work of Dolla, Peanut, Gobeshite, Prolifyk, Aping and Lisha

Gig Guide - Thursday the 5th of April, 2012

Hey,

Another huuuuuuuuuge weekend of music coming your way this weekend - with no less than 26 gigs stretching from tonight (Thursday) all the way until the Open Mic of The Cavern on Monday night.

Live Music Wrap
Tonight at the Alley Cat Cafe, the latest production from the wonderfully creative mind of Marc Eberle will be released in the form of the Cambodian Space Project's latest video. Shot at various locations around Phnom Penh earlier this year, including the Alley Cat Cafe, the clip features members from various other local bands from around the traps - including Bum N Draze, El DealBreakers and the Bayon Blues. Should be a very cool gathering so get down there, get yourself a burger and enjoy the latest creative piece from this very unique band of local artistes.

The great annual fair which is the PSE Charity Party is on again this weekend. It happens on both Friday and Saturday evening and night this year. PSE (or Pour un Sourire L'Enfant) is a local NGO which helps poor and underprivileged children gain access to a proper education and a chance to contribute successfully to the community. They have hosted many huge performances in the past - including At Robieb, Los Poporks and the Cambodian Space Project. This year they focus mainly on local bands as they host Meas Soksophear, The Permis Team and Sokea. It is a good night out for the kids and is an organization and an event well worth supporting.

The pick for Friday night will be the return of the Cambodian Space Project to the capital after their recent tour of south-eastern Australia. The band has just gone from strength to strength and Srey Thy and her natural performance has become even more professional and has really shone a light far and wide for Cambodia. The band will be introducing another member to their show for this gig. He is Gareth Rivers. His Bio goes something like this:
Gareth began playing guitar and writing songs at age 6. His first recording (aged 11) titled; "I don't like this game Uncle Phil", earned Gareth his first Golden Guitar nomination and set him on the course for a successful country music career that would see him rise to the top of Australia's Country Music charts before his descent into the depths of personal despair and musical oblivion.

"I was a Big Star, many years ago............. I did some bad things in my time, I lost a lot of friends, and I broke an Angel's heart. I wanted a fresh start, so I changed my name. My old fans will probably recognize my voice, and maybe some of them will even forgive me and welcome me back into their hearts. I'm not a bad person, but, I did some stupid things when I was a younger man. Everyone deserves a second chance.............even a scoundrel like me."

Gareth is a new man. He is a decent man. He is a haunted man. Gareth's journey has only just begun...
Kheltica make a much welcomed return to Paddy Rice this Friday night also and, if you are in Siem Reap, then you can catch Cambojam at the Banana Leaf. Cool!

There are no less than 13 gigs on this Saturday night - so punters may be faced with some difficult decisions. One of the best shows has got to be on at Equinox. They will host one of the countries best live music bands - Dub Addiction. For those who may not be aware, the band consists of a live band (keyboards, guitar, drums and bass) which then incorporates the electronic mix, and occasional howling vocals, of Professor Kinski together with the awesome rhythmical Khmer dub vocals of MC Curley. The thumping vibe and dance-able reggae rhythms exonerated by this band have got to be seen live. They are a totally great band. What makes this gig very special indeed, is that this weekend they will be joined by Naby. See more below.

Naby is a internationally renowned reggae artist. He was born in Dakar and grew up in Mbour, Senegal. His style is a combination of hip-hop and ragga, soul, funk and blues. Naby will bring to the audiences a reggae vibe with a combination of African melodies - totally cool. Naby was brought to Cambodia by the French Cultural Center and they will present him and his band at a huge concert on Saturday starting around 7:00PM at the Chenla Theatre. PLEASE NOTE that this concert is free BUT you must pick up tickets at the French Cultural Center to be afforded admission.

Congratulations to CCF and the guys at Equinox for, once again, offering local music lovers the best in musical events here in Cambodia.

Also on Saturday night don't miss the Bayon Blues as they play the Velkommen Backpackers on Street 144 starting at 8:00PM. Great set of songs from the Blues genre of the early 1920s to the 1950s. The fourth Cambodian Headbangers Ball will be on at Sharkys this Saturday night also. This gig is featuring the cream of Khmer heavy metal bands and included in the 7 band line-up is Sliten6ix and Anti-Fate. Adding to Saturday nights smörgåsbord of music is the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra playing at the FCC Phnom Penh. Cool!
