The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 31st of May, 2012

Hey,

Welcome to another weekly wrap of the live music and DJ scene by the only web  site dedicated to bringing you the music scene available around venues in Cambodia. Please feel free to send any comments and questions about the service we provide to Televisionted@BongThom.com. Any feedback appreciated.

The CCF treats all lovers of the finer side of live music to guitar prodigy Thibaul Cauvin this Friday at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra. Thibaul starting learning guitar from his father at the age of 6. After studying at the Bordeaux and Paris conservatories he started playing and touring internationally. He has now played over 1000 concerts on every continent in the world. Not a bad achievement for a 27 year old. Please note that if you want to buy the $10 tickets then they are only available at the Media library of the Institut Français du Cambodge or Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra. See last week's gig guide for a posted video of this performer.

Friday night also offers Siem Reap a special concert at the X-Bar as Dr. JP (ex Dr. JP & the Nurses) will play a couple of great sets of French rock followed by a great 50s and 60 Khmer Rock DJ mix by DJ Edwardowski. Should be very cool. Also catch The Fumes at Equinox as they present their School's Out gig

Saturday night at Equinox will be very special indeed as the totally popular and totally energetic Mekong Pirates reform for one night only. This band was one of the 'hugest' bands in the local scene from about 2009 to 2011 - filling venues wherever they played. It will be the first time they have played together since their gig at the Gasolina early last year. This 13-piece band always offers a great show and I totally urge all fans to get there as well as people who have never seen them before.

On Saturday night also, a special one-off gig featuring Dr. Krach, Stonewall and Astra-Nova will take place. This will also feature Dr. JP who has brought his band over from Thailand. The band will play two completely different sets. The first set (Dr. Krach) will showcase some of his original/Indie songs, while the second set (Stonewall) will feature a more black metal, punky set. Local rock band Astra-Nova will offer support to the gig as they were once all music students to JP. It should turn out to be an interesting evening of contrasting styles within the rock genre. Show starts at 8:30pm and finishes at 11:00pm. Totally cool!

Before those gigs, you might want to catch the Art of Fusion gig as performed by the Gabi Faja Trio at the Hotel Intercontinental. The $10.00 ticket will afford you a very rare performance of a fusion between the classical and jazz musical styles. The gig starts at 7:00PM.

The X-Bar also presents a musical quiz night in Siem Reap this Saturday night, followed by a DJ set by DJ Matoo and DJ Chase. Cool!

Please note that Pontoon will be closed this weekend from 12:00AM Friday night to 12:00AM Sunday night. Don't forget to check our Regular Gigs section to catch up with all the weekly regular happenings around the country.

Heaps coming up in the next few weeks - especially at Equinox. I will leave you this week with a video from this venue and the band Durian, whom they hosted last weekend.

Also, a huge congratulations goes out to Srey Thy and Julien Poulson as they perform next to the River Thames in London as a lead up to the Olympic games. They will be part of the Bamboo Pearl Orchestra and peform with some of the regions biggest performers, including the SambaSunda Quintet. A video of this band follows.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig-guide.

Gig Guide - Friday the 25th of May, 2012

Hey,

Well the spiky-haired guy with headphones totally dominates the gig-guide this week as his head pops-up  in 11 out of this weekends 17 events. The Tabu Velvet Lounge are on board now and are totally revving up the scene as is the recently vamped Cotton Club. Joining the fray this week is the Platinum Club who are hosting DJ Leonie. The Box Niteclub in Sihanoukville also gets a mention this week as does the X-Bar in Siem Reap as they host two full-on DJ gigs over the weekend. Pontoon are  hosting the Stanton Warriors at 1:00AM tonight (Friday) - cool!. Other great venues with gigs on this weekend include the Riverhouse Lounge and the Do it All Club. Leng Pleng is looking for a DJ writer again to add content in regard to the DJ scene every week if you feel so endowed then please contact the web site.

In terms of the live music scene, Euan Gray will take his songs and his saxophone to The Terrace in BKK1 on Saturday evening. This venue is located on Street 95 near The Flicks and it should be a great gig to enjoy in the middle of your live music weekend.

After this you could move on to the totally funkadelic, full-on, pumpin' dance ensemble which is Durian. Expect a packed house at Equinox.

Saturday sees the the Indie rock of the legendary Alice Cooper brought to the small but totally atmospheric venue known as The Cavern (Cambodia) on Street 104. The music will be extolled through the sounds and movement of the Muscle of Love. Sharkys have Oscar's Band this Saturday - totally well worth catching this all-Khmer rock band. Earlier on you can see the Lazy Drunks who play at the Velkommen Backpackers on the same night starting at 7:30PM on (Street 144 near the riverfront). This venue is also having an open-mic on Wednesday nights now - starting around the same time.

I leave you this week of a video of Thibault Cauvin will be brought to Cambodia by the French Cultural Center on the 1st of June, 2012. Here is a tatse of what you might expect.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 17th of May, 2012

Hey,

After the hugely successful live music festival at Sharkys last weekend it looks like most live musical performers are on a break this weekend. They are still some great gigs to be had, however, starting with tonight with a unique gig from the Nortos Quartett all the way from Germany. Also, starting tonight, a new regular gig from Euan Gray and Louise Norup as they perform some live jazz at The Quay.

Don't miss the gig at Equinox this Saturday at members from the traditional Khmer ensemble Kok Thlok join together with some of the original members of the Mekong Pirates and the Cyclosonics and perform a great fusion mix of traditional and contemporary Khmer and western folk and roots. It will be a great mix and a lot of fun as the musician jam and exchange between electronic and traditional instruments. Worth seeing.

Also new this week is another venue - The Exchange. This is a beautifully renovated French-colonial building located north of Wat Phnom by about 400m. They will feature DJs Warren Daly (Invisible Agent Records) and Chris Bradbury

Quite a bit coming up over the next few weeks, including an apparent return of the Mekong Pirates - I will update you with more on that next week.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 10th of May, 2012

Hey,

Another 5-day holiday looms for this weekend in celebration of the Kings birthday. The only venue that seems to be aware of this is the Knai Bang Chatt in Kep who are putting on a special BBQ and buffet with DJ Frankie on Saturday evening.

Sharkys are putting on Penhstock 3 for the weekend. They have crammed 30+ bands into 3 nights starting on Friday. The first night should be pretty huge with the final ever appearance of the Teaner Terners. Hook into their web site at http://www.sharkybarblog.com/ for the latest info and changing band schedule.

The only other live music for the weekend is Ritchy & Phil who are putting on 3 performances plus a new ensemble - Wisconsin Mango - featuring members of the Ukes of Hazzard.

There are 10 DJ gigs listed this weekend - so you are sure to find somewhere to hangout and dance. Equinox is executing something different on Saturday night as DJ Bassbender plays ectro-swing-glitch.

Coming up - great to see Australian Blues slide and finger-picking legend Phil Manning returning to Cambodia later in the year. Leng Pleng was instrumental in bringing the performer to Cambodia for his first trip in 2009. It was a totally great gig and we are all looking forward to his next appearance in June at the FCC Phnom Penh. Also look for a very special gig by the Notos Quartett * at the CJCC next Thursday. If you are in Macau or Hong Kong over the ensuing period then make sure to catch the Cambodian Space Project. Also, coming up at Equinox is a new quiz night focusing in on music trivia. It will happen at the venue on the 30th of May, 2012.

I will leave you with some news that Davis Zunk (ex-Phnom Penh) and the Wanderlusters have just released their latest album and it can be listened to and purchased if you CLICK HERE. Also a video  a live performance of the band in Ho Chi Minh city.

Also, a track from Professor Kinski and his foray into Khmer electro.

Finally a new track from Gobshite and DSK that will lead to a release of their EP later this year. Catch the outstanding lyrics.
