The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 28th of June, 2012

Hey,

What a great weekend of outrageously cool gigs! Sincerest of apologies though, because, unfortunately, you are going to have to make some tough decisions about which live music or DJ event for you. It is unlikely that you will be able to see all of the gigs on offer. Having said that, this is Cambodia and hence it is totally possible for you to garner all manner of transport and zip from gig to gig via moto, tuk-tuk, cyclo and taxi. Whatever you manage to do just totally enjoy this weekends feast of great gigs.

It starts at the MetaHouse this evening where DJ Rude Boy and French House will dominate the airwaves after their scheduled movie. Later on, at Sharkys, there will be the first of three gigs that Lottie Dah and Furor U5 will perform over the weekend. This is part of the venue's Ladies Night and includes a number of drinks specials and a lucky draw. The music starts at 11:00PM.

Friday is absolutely packed with some totally great live music. The 7:00PM gig at The Willow will feature a new ensemble that brings together the wonderful sounds of Euan Gray together with the mellifluous vocals of the gorgeous Rihannon Johnson and great keys and vocals of Charlie Corrie. Really well worth getting there.

At the same time a great array of original and Latino covers can be heard from Diego "El Gipsy" Dimarques and Philippe Javelle at the brand new La Bodega (opposite La Patate on Street 5). Diego is a French-Spanish guitarst / singer-songwriter who is part of the Gypsy Kings family - the story of this very famous musical troupe and their families can be seen here. We are so lucky to have such great music in this part of the world.

Equinox puts on a totally special night of Hip-Hop this Friday when they bring the international talents of Lottie Dah and Furor U5 with Gobeshite and Task One. It will be a great mix of this genre and should be the most special way to catch Lottie Dah and Furor U5 over this weekend.

Friday night also sees one of Cambodia's premier rock bands Cartoon Emo descending on Sharkys to unleash their contemporary vision of futuristic deathcore rock n roll ! Not for the faint hearted ! The Score celebrates Canada Day this Friday also - with the professional sounds of Musikero. Also get to The Garage if you can to catch the Glimmer Twins perform their (presumably ;o) ) Rolling Stones dominated sets.

For lovers of Blues slide and finger-picking then you should definitely get down and see Phil Manning as he arrives direct from Australia at the FCC Phnom Penh this Friday and Saturday. Phil is the founding member of Australian heavy-blues band legends Chain. Definitely get down to see Phil this weekend for some brilliant guitar work and original blues.

Also on Saturday in Kampot the Greenhouse is re-opening. Marco (from Equinox) has now partnered with Donkey Dave to get this great south-coast live music venue happening. It is a totally gorgeous and beautiful area - right on the Kampot River near the foot of Phnom Bokor. Definitely the place to be this weekend for those in Kampot because the Grass Snake Union will perform there on Saturday night. Cool!

Latest news from Equinox say that they now have a live video stream available of their gigs. You never have to miss an Equinox gig again. You can see the live stream during the gigs at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-music-at-equinox-cambodia. So super-cool!

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 21st of June, 2012

Hey,

Some people might be surprised by the totally huge night of music on in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh tonight. The reason is that today is the annual Fête de la Musique or World Music Day - an annual event that happens every year on this day, the 21st of June. It is billed as a day when everyone around the world hits the streets to play sing and dance. Cambodia is not exception with at least five events happening this evening and tonight. Siem Reap is celebrating the festival in a famous street there known as The Lane. There are at least 7 bands and DJs on the bill.

Memphis Bar are championing this special music day in Phnom Penh again this year as they present a huge line-up that includes some of the countries best Khmer rock bands. The venue usually goes late into the night on this auspicious occasion and is one of the best places to enjoy the Fête de la Musique.

Tomorrow (Friday) at Pontoon is also a great place to be with a special fund-raising event for Kosal Kiev in order for him to participate in the Cultural Olympiad in London later this year - see more details in the link below. The line-up for the event is totally huge with some of the country's best hip-hop and dub artists performing together with smokin' DJs and dance performers. Should be huge.

The Lazy Drunks return to Sharkys this Friday evening, featuring no other than local legendary rock/blues guitarist 'Smoking Kenny Smith' ! The ex-Lost Highway/Route 66 guitarist is now playing his trade in Phnom Penh, so don't miss him and his electricfying blues style playing ! Just Smokin' ! Saturday night also sees Oscars Band return to Sharkys, after their successful performance at Penhstock 3. A very underated khmer rock band, who are fine muscians in their own right !Both shows are from 9pm - 11.30pm.

Another huge event will be one of the final performances of the Cambodian Space Project before they also head to London for the Olympic Games preludes. Friday will see the band officially release their new album Not Easy Rock & Roll. The band will also play Saturday at La Croisette. Also don't miss the band's fund-raising event on the streets of Buck Hunger on Sunday. Should be a huge weekend of music. I have embedded this video before in the Leng Pleng blurb, but it is so good I will include it again here:

Another totally excellent band playing on Friday is Holliday in Cambodia playing at Equinox. Definitely a very professional band with a great array of well performed songs. Saturday night at the same venue was to see another performance by Dub Addiction. Unfortunately this gig has had to be postponed due to the illness of one of the band members. We will let you know the rescheduled date as soon as we get the info.

Just down the road from Equinox on Saturday night you will be able to catch a trio of performers at the Red Orchid. The trio features Kenny Smith together with two guitar/vocalists -  Martin the Martian and Brentus JP. Worth a look. Also look for a regular open-mic that will happen at the Red Orchid very soon.

I will leave you with a song from the Grass Snake Union that was recorded at Equinox last week.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 14th of June, 2012

Hey,

Another great long weekend of music again this week - well at least it is for Ted and I - it is always hard to figure out what is happening with these holidays and who gets the days off. There are a few returning bands as well as some leavers - always the case in a country such a transient expat population.

The bad news is that the totally funkadellic outfit of Durian, that has wowed audiences over the past year around Phnom Penh, is about to call it a day. As mentioned such losses to the local music scene are difficult to avoid and so you are just going to have to make the best of what you can get when it is available. The concession to this sad departure is that the band will be performing a huge send off this Friday at Equinox. A great show is assured. I totally urge you to get up, get out and step up to Equinox this Friday.

The much anticipated return of the countries biggest roots-a-billy, folk band will occur at this same venue on Saturday night with the Grass Snake Union. The promo goes like this:
New insanely good band members, new instruments (did someone say, 'mandolin?'), special guests, pickin', singin' and a stompin'. Don't miss it. Sleep 'til noon on Saturday and then come ready to get folked-up. Do it! This is gong to be one hell of a musical weekend in Phnom Penh. Are you ready?

It will be yet another totally great time by one of Phnom Penh's best music venues.

Friday night at Sharkys sees a different return for Holliday In Cambodia - with a fully electrified line-up instead of their normal acoustic set up. Bolstered by the punchy bass lines of former Teaner Terner (Jimmy), the evening promises to be a great night of popular rock/pop tunes (old and new.)

Saturday night sees the surprise return of Little Duke & The Mekong Blues Messengers. Spurred on no doubt by their recent cracking performance at Penhstock 3, the guys have decided to blow us away once more with their powerhouse Chicago Blues. The band's performances are somewhat few and far between these days, however, Saturday night should be a great chance to catch this band and see one of the great blues guitar players in the region - no other than Jonas Hastings (a.k.a Little Duke.). Don't Miss It ! Show starts 9pm.

Ritchy & Phil and friends are out again this weekend at the Bouchon Bar (Friday) and the Red Apron (Saturday). Always a quality act and always something new.

Huge stuff coming up too. Not the least of which will be the last couple of shows by the Cambodian Space Project before they head off to London and the other exotic European destinations. The most auspicious of these will occur next Sunday when the band hosts a fund raising event for the Buck Hunger. This small organization aims to provide free food to those that need it most. It is run by a fellow by the name of Johnny Philips, who worked in the commercial food and beverage industry for over 30 years before coming to Cambodia and feeding the poor and hungry. The band will aim to raise awareness, money and support to keep the doors open by putting on this great street party. The band has invited many other musicians from around the local music scene - so expect a totally awesome time. Johnny is also looking for other contributers to help put the event on and you can contact him using the email address at their web site - http://buckhunger.com/ . Please help if you feel you can.

Also, the Fete de la Musique is on next week. There is the great annual event that happens at Memphis for the event and this year they will feature a great array of bands. Totally looking forward to it.

Before we go a couple of great videos. The first is a totally superb piece put together for Professor Kinski & MC Curley by Marc Eberle and edited by Jean Mathis. If you ever look at only one video via the Leng Pleng newsletter then I totally urge you to make this the one. Great stuff by all those concerned. Share it with your friends.

Also, see the Cambodian Space Project's latest video put together by K.M. Lo and Julien Poulson. This version of the song Bang! Bang! I'm Afraid of Love and was shot on the streets of Macau. The song started from the pen of Sonny Bono (of all people!) in 1966 and was covered, and made famous by Nancy Sinatra that same year. The dark beauty of the song was not lost on Pan Ron who sang the Cambodian created version not long after. A great piece from the band's wonderful forthcoming album.

Lastly, a video released from the Buck Hunger people.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weekends gig-guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 7th of June, 2012

Hey,

Amazing how the live music and DJ scene in Cambodia has expanded so much over the past 3 years. Our regular gigs section now has just under 30 regular gigs that happen around the country on various days every week. Certainly a lot different to early 2009 when there was only a handful of gigs occurring each month.

This, of course, is not withstanding the live music that occurs in all the Karaoke restaurants and such around the country which has always been exceptionally vibrant and the source of a good of creativity. Although we have made several forays into being able to present to you the when and where of this local Karaoke scene - we have found it exceptionally difficult to find out exactly where the major artists perform on a week to week basis. If you feel that you would like to know more about this then please feel free to email us here at Leng Pleng.

This weeks guide adds 3 new venues to the list. The first is The Warehouse in Siem Reap who now host a weekly open-mic night on Fridays. Looks like a great regular line-up of exceptionally talented local musicians that  includes one of the guitarists whom I personally have great respect for - being guitar god Kenny Smith. He is a man who totally lives his music - totally worth getting there and seeing Kenny perform his classic Americana riffs.

The second is a Phnom Penh late-night venue called the Love Bar. On Fridays and Saturdays this venue hosts some of the better known DJs for your dancing pleasure late into the night.

I must point you in the direction of a totally great gig that will happen slightly earlier than usual (8:00PM) on Friday night - it is Euan Gray with the GTS Trio playing at Le Moon (on top of K-West on the riverfront) this Friday. A veritable treat for a totally kicked-back, laid out session jazz classics.

Also, this week all the Brits will be at Sharkys as the Stiff Little Punks will help celebrate the Queen of England's 60th year since her ascension to the throne. The night will be filled with Punk classics - including some of the Queen's personal favorites - together with members of various other local Punk ensembles regularly seen at Sharkys. The celebrations will continue on Saturday night when Indie Rock / Alice Cooper cover band Muscle of Love take to the stage at 9:00PM. This band features members from two of the leading bands in Sharky's poll on their web site where they are asking local pundits to vote for their favorite Penhstock band. You can place your vote at http://www.sharkybarblog.com/.

Another show not to miss on Friday will be Kheltica's return to Paddy Rice. This one-of-a-kind band for the local music scene plays a great mix of Britagny and Celtic music and are a good night out. See this the video below for a taste of what to expect. Also don't miss the Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam that is on tonioght and every Thursday night at the venue - all musicians welcome to come and play.

One genre that has grown extensively in the local music scene recently has been the rise of the Khmer Heavy Metal society. Two of the better bands from the 10 or so ensembles that have emanated from this movement are The AntiFate and Sliten6ix. These two bands will feature in Equinox's music weekend this week. Expect loud and heavy rock interspersed with the occasional rock ballad. Here's a taste of what you might expect on the lighter side and heavier side of the AntiFate menu.

In Siem Reap you can catch CamboJam as they play at the third new venue to this gig guide - In Touch in Siem Reap. If you would like to get ba taste of this eclectic mix of Siem Reap musicians then you can watch the latest video by the Tuk Tuk Sessions guys. It is Chapter 40 of this great web site and fetaures CamboJam in their recent trip to Phnom Penh.

Finally, Pontoon continue their great run of international DJ artists on Saturday night with the presentation of Golden Crew. Cool!

Keep your eyes on a great selection of gigs coming your way from Equinox this month, plus a great gig by Australian blues legend Phil Manning  at the FCC Phnom Penh.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this weeks gig guide.
