The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 26th of July, 2012

Hey,

As we near the end of July and the rains really start to settle in then the band members and DJs will start to head back to their dryer, sunnier climes for a few weeks or months. Meanwhile, in Cambodia, the music manifesto consolidates itself into a compact boutique scene but with a good sprinkling of quality gigs.

On Thursday in Siem Reap this week you can see a mix of modern styles and live music at the Heritage Hotel. It is a gig that incorporates vocals, sax and electronic DJ mix spun by DJ Edwardowski. Cool! In Phnom Penh on the same night you will be able to catch the brand new ensemble which is MB2. They are a jazz duo purporting their skills through the famous black & white keys and an e-violin. Swings, ballads and tango is their thing - so check 'em out. Earlier on Thursday you can witness the completion of a huge fresco that has been painted by Canadian artist FONKi. The unveiling will be done in conjunction with live traditional music.

On Friday The Willow will welcome back Conrad Keely and Amanda Bloom to their stage. They will be joined by wonderful singer / songwriter / keyboardist Charlie Corrie and so I am predicting a relatively awesome gig. It starts at 7:30PM. Khmer rock maestros Oscar's Band return to wow the patrons at Sharkys. These guys are a totally professional outfit and have been tramping the stages of Phnom Penh for many years with totally classic guitar riffs and full-on rock. You should go to see them. On the riverfront at Paddy Rice the wonderful tunes of Holliday in Cambodia can be heard.

Saturday has gigs at the two mainstays of the Phnom Penh scene offering us a musical platter. Equinox hosts the 12-member Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra. This very eclectic mix of nationalities and instruments cover a range of eastern European Gypsy music and other exotic folk. At Sharkys there are three bands to enhance your musical experience - Tango & Snatch will open the show followed by the headlining Splitter. The show will then be concluded by a riotous punk/Oi! set by the entirely immimicable Shambollic69. Totally cool!

A reminder that Equinox is offering a hugely cool service allowing you to view their gigs online via a live stream. The feed will be streaming out the tunes from the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra this week. They have now added sound that comes directly from the live mixing console. Totally and outrageously good and a total boon for us live music enthusiasts here in the Kingdom. The stream can be hooked into here - http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-music-at-equinox-cambodia.

In the coming up section this week look for a couple of gigs that will happen in Kampot in two weekends time (10th and 11th of August) from Up 2U Mango. According to James Speck from the band they plan on having "both a musical and mental breakdown in Kampot.....with mangos" - that would be worth seeing in my book. They will play on the Friday and Saturday nights at two different venues. You will also be able to catch the new riverside jam happening every Sunday afternoon in Kampot at The Greenhouse. It's apparently different from other open-mics or jam sessions in the sense that it's more an afternoon thing - open air, by the river, swimming and BBQing. It's good for bringing the kids and enjoying the company of friends. It started just 2 weeks ago. Sounds totally cool.

Quite a few videos have been sent in this week. This first video I have put here for anyone that likes to throw tantrums. It is from Penhstock 2012 and Sharkys and features a one of the best performances at the fest. It is from the Herding Cats. This video was sent in by Jerby Santo and is only 1 of a collection of videos that he has made available from this event. See links to other performances of the event at the end of the video.

The next video has been sent in by Sonny Krishnan and was recorded at the gig of Kok Thlok at Equinox last week. It features one of the most naturally beautiful lead singers you will ever have the pleasure of seeing and of listening. A total privilege for all patrons.

Finally, another haunting series of imagery, poetry and growling musical melodies from Krom. This video was shot entirely on Street 104 and is a song entitled Mango Madness. In late September, Krom will release a hard copy Collector's Edition of "Songs from the Noir" which includes the 14-track audio CD and an 8-track DVD. There will also be an 8-page booklet that includes Krom lyrics, texts by Noir author Christopher G. Moore and journalist Vincent MacIsaac, and images from Noir artist Chris Coles.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 19th of July, 2012

Hey,

The regular gig at The Quay tonight will be the last time for Rhiannon Johnson. I was lucky enough to catch Rhiannon and Euan there a couple of weeks ago. They have a great set of songs and perform them with a unique warmth and charm. Totally worth getting there for this last gig.

Kheltica return to Paddy Rice as Holliday in Cambodia does to Sharkys on Friday.

On Saturday the traditional Cambodian band Kok Thlok play at Equinox. Great bunch of guys and great musicians. They will play a variety of traditional and contemporary tunes. They will be playing traditional instruments as well as the more electrified versions of instrumentation. They will also play together with other expat musicians from around the traps whom you will probably recognize. So, fundamentally, they are a true fusion band and worth getting to know. Cool!

Also on Saturday Warapo make the trip over from Vietnam again to play at the FCC Phnom Penh. The GhettoBlasters are also back in town and will spin an awesome couple of sets at Pontoon.

Plenty coming up - especially at the Led Zephyr in Sihanoukville who will present a series of gigs in August. If you are planning any trips to the south coast then you might want to coincide with one or more of these gigs. One of these gigs will be the return of Stoned Again - said band of last week. Smokin'!

News in also that there is a new cafe that has opened on Street 57. It is called The Piano and it is an off-shoot from the So Srorsos Music School. They are fairly open about letting guests get up and play. You will probably see Amanda Bloom dance her fingers across the keys there on occasion. Worth checking out.

Leaving you this week with a video of a band called Muk who performed a song made famous by local Khmer heartthrob Preab Sovath on CTN. It is a song called Thngai Bak Rosiel.

Gig Guide - Friday the 13th of July, 2012

Hey,

All the rain of the past few days - wow! I would hesitate to say that it is relatively unusual for this time of year and , personally I am predicting a very wet Wet season. It's not stopping the music however and it might inspire a few changes to some set-lists.

You will be able to catch a couple of new acts at Sharkys on Friday and Holliday in Cambodia return to give you a few huge and dance-able sets at Equinox. Also, lots coming from Paddy Rice again in this weeks gig guide with Musikero this weekend and Kheltica next weekend. I

DJ scene-wise we have DJ Orawan visiting from Bangkok. She has many credits to her resume, including playing along side Fatboy Slim, Goldie and touring with King Kapisi. Should be a great couple of gigs this weekend.

Also, make sure you catch Rhiannon Johnson and Euan Gray this weekend. They are performing a regular gig on Wednesdays now at the RiverHouse Bistro (not to be confused with the Riverside Bistro) located downstairs from the RiverHouse Lounge. It is billed as a business-to-business networking situation and the duo make a cool and inspiring atmosphere for the event. They can also be heard at another regular gig at The Quay Hotel on Thursdays. They also play at the Artillery Cafe this Friday night. A gig for all the senses.

In other news, keep your eyes open for a brand new dedicated live music venue that will open up later this year on the corner of Norodom and Street 360. It will be managed by Ritchy & Phil and will feature a range of local and visiting musical performers. Cool! Also, if you find yourself wondering around the vicinity of the Heart of Darkness this weekend then pop across the road and call into the new Sticky Fingers Art Prints shop. It has a range of musically-inspired prints and T-shirts and the likes. Totally cool!

Thursday the 12th of July, 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the first ever Rolling Stones gig. It was was held at a place in London called The Marquee way back in 1962. Amazing to think, at ages approaching 70, that they are still jamming and possibly planning a new album. Little Duke's theory is that they have absolutely no idea what else to do with all their time and money. Who knows – may be they will tour Cambodia before they hit their 100. In the mean time you will be able to get all the outrageous Kieth Richards guitar licks extolled through the plectrum of local telecaster master James “JJ” Jessup at Stoned Again's next wholly anticipated gig. Here is a video to celebrate the occasion.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 5th of July, 2012

Hey,

Another great weekend of music coming our way this weekend. Considering we are well into the low season we can possibly say the music scene is alive and well in Cambodia.

A brand new manifestation will rock the airwaves at Equinox with new band The Schkoots (pronounced chik-hoo-its - meaning 'crazy' in Khmer) hitting the stage on Friday night. The band is a mix of musicians from other vwell known local bands (including members of Dub Addicition) and play a collection of classic/alternative rock-punk. "It is a sort of Chuck Berry meets the Sex Pistols type of thing" according to Anthony Mrugacz - manager of the venue. This debut is preceded by two well known, full-on Khmer rock ensembles - being Anti-Fate and Sliten6ix. All in all a totally great night of heavy and alternative rock.

A HUGE party happening at the Memphis Pub this Friday night as they celebrate their 8th birthday. It will be a night filled with the venues "usual suspects" that includes the Rock X-Press band (Bona, Danny, Tep, Pov and Sambath) together with Sokha on sax, and singers Maia, Frankie and others. This is, without doubt, one of Phnom Penh's best live music venues and will be a truly auspicious occasion. A full congratulations and happy celebrations to Bona, Mel and all the guys at Memphis Bar.

The totally classic Chicago blues will again hit Sharkys this week in part 1 of their 3-part celebration of the U.S. independence day. This will, of course, be in the form of the local totally professional outfit of Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers. A great night and great atmosphere at this venue with this band - totally worth getting there. Part two of the weekend, on Saturday night, will present the Kampot Peppers. Rounding off the weekend on Sunday evening will be Smokin' Kenny Smith who will be your host for a new regular open-mic that will happen at the venue. Smokin' Kenny is definitely a the real thing when it comes to classic Americana guitar. He totally lives his music and all musicians are welcome to get up on stage with Kenny this Sunday.

Metahouse is definitely ramping things up now with 3 DJ gigs on this weekend. The biggest of which is probably the Kimchi Collective show on Saturday night. It will feature four DJs and be preceded by a skateboarding workshop and film at the venue. Cool!

For all true live music aficionados out there I must point you in the direction of La Bodega on Street 5. It is a totally great late night music venue which features founding Gypsy Kings member Diego "El Gipsy" Dimarqués and friends every night of the week. The ambiance of this venue is really superb and, with a great late night menu available from La Potate straight across the road, I feel sure it is soon to become one of the capitals most well liked and popular haunts for musicians and for those people in the know.

This week also news that the long awaited release of Krom's first album Songs from the Noir has now been made available. This is a totally wonderful melancholy album of dark love songs is a unique and elusive treasure from this reclusive band. A totally great collection of poetry and story telling told through the feminine Khmer vocals of Sophea Chamroeun and rasping Minko English lyrics punctuated with love-filled, haunting acoustic finger-picking and slide guitar. It is definitely another great piece of work to add to your collection of local album releases that encapsulates definitive aspects of the life and times of Cambodia and surrounds today and yesterday. You can get the album HERE.
