The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Friday the 31st of August, 2012

Hey,

A multitude of quality gigs again this weekend. We will be welcoming back some performers, saying bye-for-now to others and enjoying the expansion and re-mixing of still others.

The far-reaching appeal of the Khmer 60s rock reaches new ground this week with the release of a feature article in a one of Sweden's largest newspapers - the Svenska Dagbladet (CLICK HERE - you might have to use Google Translate to get a translation). The article talks about the genre in general but also extols the great sounds emanating from Kampot and, in particular, the Kampot Playboys

Anyone witnessing the band at Equinox last week can vouch for the great sound and totally dance-able rhythms. In fact they are not limited to the Khmer 60s rock and play a range of traditional tunes as well as touching on western pop and rock with a unique Cambodian flavor. The great vocals and presence of Cheat up the front makes sure of that, and his energy fills the crowd with the essence of the rock culture - Cambodian style ;o). He is backed with a great array of rocking beats and dance-able rhythms and, last Saturday at least, featured a totally cool and happening horn section. If you missed the boys last weekend then - no problem - you can either catch them again this week at two venues (The Willow and the Spirit House) or see the video of the gig made available via the courtesy of Equinox (CLICK HERE). With the same link, you will also be able to catch the great debut performance of Conrad Keely and his new band Rendezvous who will also play the Willow this Friday. You will need to click well into the video (over 1.5 hours) before the music starts.

That second gig at the Spirit House starts at 5:00PM on Sunday and will also feature members of Durian - probably my most recommended gig of the week. The Spirit House is located right on the river across the Japanese Bridge. Patrons who reminisce over Maxine's (Snow's Bar) of a couple of years ago will appreciate the venue as it is in a similar area - but this time north of the Japanese bridge rather than south. Cool!

Sharkys will be a great place to be on Saturday night with some of the countries newest, best and biggest Punk performers on stage. Be ready for a high-energy, riotous night of full-on rock and punk. In the words of Laura J Snook "....expect the best of old-school Brit punk, Oi! and a big shout-out to the Putin-clobbering Pussy Riot!". Sounds totally awesome to me - you might have to stock up on some Sticky Fingers T-shirts before you head to the venue. Laura will head up the 8-member Shambolic69 who will feature in between Tango & Snatch (who opens the show) and Bob P and the Lop Lops. Note the gig starts at the earlier time of 8:00PM.
Punters in Sihanoukville this weekend will have the chance to see two performances at the Led Zephyr this weekend. The first, on Friday night, will be Stoned Again with Saturday night being followed up by Muscle of Love. Both performances are supported by local guy Roger de la Paz. Catch it if you are in town.

The other huge news is the return of the Cambodian Space Project, who will re-enter the Phnom Penh atmosphere at Equinox this weekend. It should be great to see the new collection of songs back at one of the band's original venues. The band returns from a successful tour with performances in Spain, France and England.

A very special DJ and live music gig will also occur on Friday night at Pontoon this weekend. For those who may not know, local Hip-Hop dub-artist MC Lisha will head to the east coast of the United States to be part of the U.S. State Department sponsored cultural exchange event named OneBeat. The month long tour will see MC Lisha join other artists from 21 other countries (see details here). The event at Pontoon will feature a mix some top performers in a celebration of the artists opportunity. Cool!

Other gigs of note this weekend include the KL Piano Trio for classical music lovers, as well as the Meta Sessions that continue to extol the totally cool and eclectic nature of the DJ scene at MetaHouse on Saturday night - billed as "the best in electronic sounds, hip hop, bass, house, disco/nu disco and cutting edge party music of the highest distinction". Also, a new gig at the Cadillac Bar debuts next Wednesday with the classic acoustic duo of Sugar Daddy. Definitely a great vibe created by these two accomplished musicians. This coming Saturday in Siem Reap Cambojam will host an Open Mic at the Banana Leaf. It will be the bands 50th time they have played at the venue and will be the very last with singer KC who is heading back to Philippines.

In other news, and as testament to the growing influence of the local music scene, local creative band Krom has released news that the band has now been commissioned to compose soundtrack for Australian - Khmer documentary “In search of Camp 32, a journey back to year zero.” For more information about “In search of Camp 32”, CLICK HERE   and HERE. Smokin'!

This week I leave you with the sounds of the Prey Veng rooster and the Cambodian Space Project and their rendition of the classic Don't Say You Love Me - featuring some totally great sax.

Also, check-out this great video from the Vietnam-based Wunderlusters who are looking to do a tour of Cambodia later this year. The band is led by former Phnom Penh resident Davis Zunk who many of you may recognize in the video.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 23rd of August, 2012

Hey,

In the middle of the low-season and still some great gigs on around the traps. That's what we like to see !!! Whoooo-hooo!

The return of the great sound of Stoned Again returns the Sharkys on Friday night. The totally classic sets of Rolling Stones covers as cavorted on the fretboard of James 'JJ' Jessup's guitar and the vocals of Karen 'Chick Jagger' McArthur has been sorely missed recently and, as such, expect a high energy, packed dance floor well into the night.

The Velkommen Backpackers is also a great place to be with the presentation of a brand new band - Sugar Daddy. These guys are highly experienced, enjoyable and talented guitar players and will play a range of rock & roll classics. With good, cheap and cold beer and affordable pizza and starting at 8:00PM, I recommend it as a good place to start your musical weekend.

With the success of the Jungle Dance in Kep last weekend, Dr. Wah Wah, DJ Moodydann and the Phat Controller bring their show to Phnom Penh and the 3Mangos guest house on Friday night. Cool!

On Saturday night there is a totally great selection too. The most auspicious of which will probably be at Equinox with classic fusion-Khmer tunes of the Kampot Playboys. They will be joined on stage by Conrad Keely in the form of a new ensemble named Rendezvous and I am told they will be playing an interesting and unusual collection of covers and also some Conrad's originals. Always something new and different from this venue. Totally cool!

Beforehand you may want to catch dinner with Rhiannon Johnson, Barry Speirs and Ritchy Boisson at The Red Apron for some good quality music, food and wine.

The DJ scene will be huuuuge on Saturday night with two great gigs. There will be the Digital Punks at The RiverHouse Lounge and DJ Tech 12 and the GhettoBlasters at Pontoon. Take your choice or flirt between the two - up to you ;o)

Skip Sutherland pops up on Sunday afternoon for your listening pleasure at the Green Vespa. Could be good for something a bit different.

I will leave you this week with a reminder about the great local web site called the Tuk-Tuk Sessions (http://www.tuktuksessions.com). This web site gathers together all the best talent that passes through the local music scene, puts them into a tuk-tuk, drives through the streets of Cambodia (and occasionally other countries ;o) ) and gets them to sing a song. In March of this year the guys got together Conrad Keely, Amanda Bloom and Chris from the Kampot Playboys to sing a song entitled Wild Mountain Thyme (Will You Go Lassie, Go). The sound on the video is not the best but you will certainly get a good idea of the warmth and talent that you might expect to see on Saturday night at Equinox. Enjoy it.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 16th of August, 2012

Hey,

Gigs coming from around the major urban centers again this week. The Fumes have hit the south coast and the beach and will play at Sihanoukville's best known dedicated live music venue - The Led Zephyr - on Friday and Saturday. In Kep on Friday the annual Kep Jungle Dance is being hosted by the Kep Lodge and features the high profiling DJs Dr. Wah Wah, DJ Moodydann and Phat Controller. Cool!

Cambodia's best mango-psycho ensemble return from, what was - from all accounts - an awesome weekend in Kampot. They will be refreshed and renamed as Wisconsin Mango for a gig at Paddy Rice on Friday night. They will also probably include some special guests that will come up and jam with them too apparently. Cool md'awng tee-uht!

Also on Friday night, Pontoon will feature the totally super sexy and sultry and Sarah Love - a international club DJ, musician, writer, producer, journalist and BBC presenter. Expect a Hip-Hop and Afro-Pop mix and more. Super cool!

Sharkys are hosting two bands again this week. They will again host the Khmer rock band Oscar's Band on Friday and Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers on Saturday night. The second gig also includes a Rib Cook-Off which starts at 6:00PM. Smokin'!

If you are in Siem Reap then you can get to The Warehouse and catch Gaz & Rob. They are billed as "raw root covers and original songs that features guitars, bongos, vocal harmonies and Gaz’s didgeridoo!".

Some news coming from Kampot is about a new live music venue. It is called the ABC Bar (A art B bar C craze) and is located one block from the riverfront and next to the newly renovated market. They have live music every Tuesday and Saturday night featuring their in-house band The Pistolinas. Worth checking out definitely.

I will leave you this week with a couple of features from the hard drive of Mr. Anthony Mrugacz, manager of Equinox, and sound-engineer extraordinaire. This week Anthony has provided both video and an MP3 sound track from the Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers gig of last week.

Make sure you get about 25 minutes into this video so at you can check out the music ;o). This video comes from the live stream that the venue has now made available for all it's live music gigs.

Also check-out this video of an interview with Sarah Love.

Gig Guide - Friday the 10th of August, 2012

Hey,

Personally I am monumentally aggrieved that I cannot make it to Kampot this weekend. It's going to be a totally enjoyable weekend with three great gigs and a wonderful selection of quality bands. It will start tonight (Friday) at the totally cruisey and laid -back but also rockin' venue - the Bodhi Villa. Located right on the Kampot river, the gig will include the much-talked about and new band The Pistolinos together with the full-on show of the phsycho-mango trio of Up 2U Mango. You can spend Saturday recovering by the river and sipping on fresh mango and banana smoothies in order to get yourself ready for the gig at the Greenhouse that night - featuring Up 2U Mango again together with the eclectic fusion of the Kampot Playboys (see the video below). Sunday afternoon you can return to the Greenhouse for an afternoon jam with a special selection of local and extralocal quality musicians. Altogether, it should be a great weekend and I totally urge you to get there for it.

If you can't get there for the weekend then there are still plenty of great gigs for you. In Siem Reap on Friday the brilliant horns of Rhythm Conspiracy will be playing at Molly Malones. The band is celebrating 50 years since the release of the first James Bond movie and as such will be playing songs from the soundtrack of Dr. No. Check out this great live MP3 track that Tommy Nick from the band sent. Some very cool solos in there.

In Phnom Penh on Friday make your choice from the brand new 2 Shots and a Chaser at Paddy Rice, the great sound of Holliday in Cambodia at Sharkys or the James Brown cover band from Thailand known as Supabad at the FCC. Cool!

On Saturday in Phnom Penh Little Duke and the Mekong Blues Messengers return with their Chicago Blues to Equinox. Look for special guest Gustav Hastings who will get up and play with the band this week. In Siem Reap the ever-popular Cambojam will play at the X-Bar.

There is plenty coming up all around the country from Sihanoukville to Kep to Kampot to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. A great vibrant scene that just keeps growing. Smokin'ly cool! Also look later this year for a possible special debut live performance from the elusive Krom. More details when they come to hand.

I will leave you this week with a taste of the live music that you will experience in Kampot this weekend. It is a video sent by Justin from the Kampot Playboys and is a great live performance from the band of a Khmer version of Gloria - check it out.

Also check out this great 35+ minute mix track sent by DJ Illest. Totally cool.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 2nd of August, 2012

Hey,

Hibernation mode for several venues hits the music scene as we move into August. Drudgery...................!

Metahouse is certainly not one of them with the venue offering a veritable smörgåsbord of quality, boutique gigs this weekend. Whoo-hooooo! They start off tonight (Thursday) with a combination of three musical events. Firstly the rare return of the classical music of Anton Isselhardt and colleagues as they present a "celebration of Frederick the Great". This is preceded by a film that explores the life of the legendary punk queen Patti Smith, which is then followed by a couple of DJ sets by the X-Pat-SoundSystem guys - this week featuring American Punk and New Wave music. The venue continues the music the following night (Friday) with the Gabi Faja Trio in their interpretations of the music of King Noradom Sihanouk. On Saturday night a full on DJ set will be presented by the Kimchi Collective of DJ Cyncity, DJ Dan Beck and DJ Balaton & BFox. Cool! See links below for more details on each of these gigs.

Other live music gigs of note is the regular Lazy Drunks at Sharkys as well as Oscar's Band that return to the venue again this week. Also, there is a special session with Ritchy Boisson, Sebastien Adnot and Sam the Mandolin Man at The Red Apron on Saturday night. Cool!

DJ scene-wise, the Riverhouse Lounge ramps-up the sexiness volume to turn you on to their Night at the Playboy Mansion event that features DJ Yukie from Thailand.

Also, don't forget the gigs by Up 2u Mango in Kampot next weekend.

I leave you this week with a totally groovy video from the camera, keyboard, hard-drive and the poetic, stylish and sublime mind of Scott Bywater. He has produced a series of great videos which he has shared across various social networking sites. The videos show the Cambodian Space Project as they traveled and played across Spain, France and England last month. The videos are backed by a great selection of Khmer 60s rare rock classics and is an enjoyable and insightful way to view the trials and tribulations of the bands ventures through the continent. The video below is from their latest trek to their gig in London.
