The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 27th of September, 2012

Hey,

Some quality gigs lined up for this weekends gig guide. Cool!

The passionate keys, lyrics and vocals of Amanda Bloom teams up with the effervescent Up To You Mango at the Willow to start off the weekend. I am not sure if the performers will be playing together but it would be worth checking out to see what manifests. The Willow has a laid-back atmosphere and is a cool place to hang out with good music. Euan Gray and his saxophone will be extolling the virtues of Retro Jazz at the Artillery Cafe to also start the weekend..

Not far from there the Bouchon Bar will be celebrating the first anniversary since opening. The celebration will be done in the style of a collection of five prominent performers combining for a show of totally pleasurable quality. This is also a cool place to hang out and enjoy a wine. The live music will be followed up with a DJ set by DJ Juveris

At Equinox on Friday you can catch the return of The Fumes. The band will be presenting some new covers of 80s, 90s and 00's. If you haven't seen the band for a while then get down to see the new smokin' line-up and set list. Musikero also make a return to Paddy Rice on Friday night. Cool!

Saturday sees a totally eclectic mix of gigs - from classical to acoustic jazz to Latin to Hip-Hop and dance to rock. No excuses for not getting out there and seeing something that moves your heart and soul to the rhythms of the local music scene. One of the most prominent of these gigs will be the eight bands put on by Sharkys as the bands battle it out to win a $200 prize money. The gigs pits the Khmer bands against the expat bands. Should be a night fully of heavy competition and great quality rock. Expect a packed venue.

Another auspicious Saturday night gig will be at Equinox as the put on a Tiny Toones benefit party. Tiny Toones is a drop-in center for disadvantaged children and youth in Cambodia. The night will feature some of the countries best rappers and break-dancers and combine with a couple of happening DJ sets. There will also be a special appearance by Kosal Khiev. Please be aware that there will be a $4 entrance fee ($2 for Khmer) for this gig.

Saturday night also sees the official opening of the Sticky Fingers Art Prints at Shop 29 of the Golden Soriya Mall (across the road from the Heart of Darkness). The opening will feature a couple of sets from the Cambodian Space Project followed up by some DJ sets. Cool!.

Also, from our Breaking News department, we have been informed that elusive band Krom will finally debut live on the evening of the 20th of October, 2012 on the prime time CTN show Entertainment Tonight Concert. The appearance will feature an interview with Krom vocalist Sophea Chamroeun followed by a live performance of 3 songs from the Krom album Songs from the Noir. Super cool!

This week a couple of videos of what to expect around various traps this weekend. The second of which was kindly provided by Sonny Inbaraj Krishnan. Make sure to watch the whole video as it really starts smokin' as the song moves along.

Also, check out this great video from Tiny Toones.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 20th of September, 2012

Hey,

A great set of music again this weekend. We are totally in the middle of the main part of the wet season so expect lots of rain - but don't let that put you off form getting out and about.

This weekend sees Equinox, Tchou Tchou School and The Greenhouse hosting a very special series of gigs indeed. The venues will present the international French duo of 12em & Raph, UK rapper Gobeshite, Khmer rock space-trippers the Cambodian Space Project and other local musicians and artists over a 4-part series of gigs. The gigs are an effort to support the Playing for a Change foundation. The Playing For Change Foundation is dedicated to creating positive change through music education by developing music schools and programs around the world.

The special series of gigs starts on Friday night at Equinox with a great combination of hip-hop and saxophone from 12em & Raph. The guys will be joined by Gobeshite and will thus form a totally special atmosphere that will be abundant with cool backing melodies and rhythmical poetry. This gig will be preceded by the screening of videos that will show more about the Playing For Change Foundation. Worth checking out.

Part 2 of the special weekend will happen at the Tchou Tchou School at 12:00 noon on the next day (Saturday). It will be a performance by the Cambodian Space Project that will be followed up by a jam with the band and other local musicians. Should be a rather exceptional eclectic mix of local and western music. Following this performance there will be a bus leaving from the venue to Kampot. You might want to be on the bus because you will be able to catch part 3 of the weekend.

Part 3 will see the jazzy hip-hop of 12em & Raph combine with the spacey rock of the Cambodian Space Project on Saturday night at The Greenhouse in Kampot. The concert and inevitable party will go to the wee small hours of the night no doubt. This will also be preceded by the Playing for a Change videos.

Part 4, and the concluding part of the weekend, will occur the next day (Sunday) at lunchtime on the river as The Greenhouse puts on their weekly jam session and BBQ. This will include a great mix of local Potpat and Phnom Penhian musicians as well as visiting International artists and most likely continue for most of the afternoon. Don't forget your swimming costumes because the river is totally worth getting into. The bus will return to Phnom Penh at 6:00PM. Please contact the guys at Equinox for more details on this special weekend.

Returning the wrap to Phnom Penh, Bum N' Draze performed a totally energized performance of great metal-inspired quality last week at La Croisette's demolition party. They will hit the stage again this Friday at Sharkys. One of the longest surviving expat bands in the country, they would have to be one of the best exponents of this genre in the country. They have a great aggressive stage presence that totally infiltrates and motivates the audience and it's all done with just the bass, drums and guitar - a total boon for the local music scene. On Saturday at the same venue catch the Kampot Playboys and their awesome renditions and their full-on horn section.Cool!

Earlier on Saturday in the capital the band at the Red Apron turns to a four-piece with the return of Euan Grey and Lewis Pragasam as they join Seb Adnot  and Ritchy Boisson. Totally worth catching the great music at this venue.

In Sihanoukville this weekend there are a couple of totally great gigs happening. Saturday sees the entrance of MC Curley & Professor Kinski at the Samdan (NGO Mlop Tapang Application Restaurant, 100m from the golden lions). They will play a range of electronic mixed tracks with Khmer dub and totally cool and bouncy back-beat. On Sunday at 8:00PM The Schkoots will be in town and combine together with local legend Bob Passion to play at a music venue that is new to this gig guide - the Space Cat. The band will be j oined by Khmer-Indie rock exponent Su. Smokin'!

Other gigs of note include a brand new band to Cambodia that hits the capital this weekend. They are a high-energy, dance-able, Latin ensemble known as Luna Negra and they play at The Latin Quarter on Saturday night. Also the live music continues at Paddy Rice again this week with the great Celtic sounds of Kheltica. Cool!

I will leave you this week with a series of videos aiming to inspire you to join the Playing for a Change gigs this weekend.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Friday the 14th of September, 2012

Hey,

Great mix of music this weekend - from Mexican to Blues to Khmer Rock to Classical to refined Jazz to Latin to DJ House. The available selection should allow you to find something befitting your gustatory perceptions of the musical kind this week. Cool!

La Croisette are refurbishing. This requires a certain amount of demolition - in two parts. Part 1 will occur on Friday night when DJ Marcus Mucous and Sliten6ix will cause a total riot by handing out hammers and playing Khmer Heavy Metal, Punk, New Wave and Alternative Rock. Assuming the place is still standing, part 2 will occur on Saturday night with the Cambodian Space Project followed by Bum 'N Draze. I hope someone has told the neighbors. It should be a couple of nights of high powered musical energy at least and a good way to farewell the old look of one of the better live music venues in town.

Just down the road at Paddy Rice on Friday night, Two Shots and a Chaser will be equipped with the loudest acoustic guitars in Cambodia and will extol the musical virtues of  rockabilly, rock and roll, and ol’ timey C&W. Over at Sharkys on the same night the totally cruisey, blues tunes from the Kampot Peppers will fill the night. Totally great band these guys with a great selection of songs. The band will also play another gig at the same venue on Saturday night. Smokin' Kenny Smith will join the the band on both nights and Little Duke will bring his unique slide and finger-picking mastery to the bands' sets on Saturday night.

On Saturday night at Equinox you will be able to catch the enriched, quality Khmer rock of AntiFate  as they are joined by both Sliten6ix and The Schkoots. A totally great venue with a totally great sound. Always something different from Equinox. Cool!

The Alley Cat Cafe will celebrate Mexican Independence Day this Friday - not sure the band they have lined up though. It is always worth calling in to this venue - not only for the unique musical ensembles they tend to attract but also for the tastey burgers.

The Red Apron, again, has a music and wine buffet available on Saturday night. I was there last weekend and I can totally vouch for a great atmosphere. Although they have really delicious food buffet on offer - you can always just sit in the big comfortable chairs and sip on one of the great selection of wines. This week they will feature a 4-piece band that includes the totally laid-back awesomeness of Lewis Pragasam from Malaysia on drums and Barbadian Rhiannon Johnson on her mellifluous vocals. Always something different from this venue too.

Lots on offer in the Coming Up section as we float our way out of the low season. Over the next few weeks keep a look out for a fellow by the name of Steve Murray who will start to play around the traps. A taste of his music can be garnered from the video featured below:

Two videos also supplied by Equinox this week recorded via the venue's live online stream. Check out the drum solo from th AntiFate - totally rockin'. This is followed by a track from Rendezvous from a couple of weeks ago. Super cool!
