The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 25th of October, 2012

Hey,

A totally smokin' gig guide this week. It is so due to the visit to Cambodia by the internationally renowned and totally cool Indie rock band ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, 5 days of classical music of the 9th International Music Festival, the return of the Cambodian Space Project after their performance extolled by Nick Cave, as well as a number of happening DJ gigs that culminate at the end of the guide with Halloween gigs. It is a long weekend this weekend with Monday being a holiday and Wednesday is also slated as a holiday. Totally cool!

The 9th International Music Festival starts tonight at the CJCC and puts on a performance every day until it's grand finale at the same venue on Monday. A must for lovers of fine music as it includes a number of international artists from Myanmar, Russia, Korea, Canada, the United States, Vietnam, Germany, and England as well as the cream of local talent.

Friday night at Sharkys is going to be totally packed - no doubt. So much so they have decided to put a price on the door ($3) - a first for Sharkys I believe. The night will be started two of Cambodia's most full-on and best known Indie Rock / metal bands in The Anti-Fate and Sliten6ix. The night is totally filled with anticipation due to the expected performance of one of the biggest acts ever to hit the local music scene. ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead are a huge act with a high-energy, loud, rampant and contrastive performance. They combine totally epic guitar riffs with high energy drum rhythms and vocals that can pick you up and then slam you down and then put you on your feet again. Look for the energy to build and thump you as the night moves on. A totally great band.

This band has toured all over the world and have now released 8 albums - with the latest "Lost Songs" being released this month. The band has appeared on U.S. prime time television several times - including multiple The Tonight Show appearances. There is no doubting the band's unique and authentic creative qualities and their aim to extoll these qualities to the people who live under repressive regimes. See their band page here. If you want more then you can join two of the band's founding members - Jason Reece and Conrad Keely, for an acoustic performance at The Willow early on Saturday evening.

A quieter, more subdued on night can be had on Friday night in the capital at Rubies Wine Bar with  DJ Moodydann and Phat Controller.

Saturday night also sees the return of the Cambodian Space Project after their much talked about tour to Bali and northern Australia. They will play at Equinox and I can imagine the vibe of the totally outrageously great weekend of music will continue on at this venue on this night.

If you are in Sihanoukville then you will be able to catch Anti-Fate this weekend at the Led Zephyr. They will play both Saturday and Sunday at this venue  - cool! Hopefully they will be able to carry Fridays inspirational performance all the way to the south coast for the weekend - definitely worth seeing this band.

DJ gigs-wise, look for a series of performances from DJ Edwardowski after his return from a month-long tour of Thailand. He, and his fellow DJs, will be playing various venues in Siem Reap that culminates in a double-venue gig at The DogHouse and the X-Bar for Halloween on Wednesday.

Here is a taste of what you might expect on Friday night at Sharkys.

If you haven't seen it yet, here is a video that has been doing the rounds on Facebook. It is a time-lapse video shot around Phnom penh by David Simon and with music by Sigur Ros.

Altogether, have a totally great time this weekend - you should definitely find something you like. From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Special Edition for the Passing of King Father Norodom Sihanouk

The water from the Tonle Sap comes from the heart of Cambodia. Today, as the sun peers over the morning horizon, the water of this great river flows slowly. The river does what it always does at this time of the year and meets the Mekong River in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. It's flow is slow, relentless and powerful and takes with it all the outputs from the life that rests along its shores. Today it takes something that it has not met in a very long time. Today the river will take with it the tears of a people that say goodbye to one of their most loved and respected Kings.

Everyone here at Leng Pleng would like to express their sincere condolences to all Cambodian people around the world after the passing of King-Father Norodom Sihanouk. We share with you the sense of loss that comes with such great passing and will feel privileged and proud to remember with you the love, sincerity, wisdom and inspiration that King-Father Norodom Sihanouk gave to his country and his people.

There are no gigs this week due to the week of mourning that will take place following the passing of King Father Norodom Sihanouk. Many of the gigs that would have been taking place have been postponed by one week. A full update will be made available next week.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a solemn and thoughtful weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps.

Gig Guide - Thursday the 11th of October, 2012

Hey,

A 5-day holiday in on the horizon this weekend. It is the end of Pchum Ben and marks a time when stress levels start to taper off and the cooler, greener and happier season takes over. It is a time when Khmer families get together and pay respect to past relatives and it also means that pagodas all over the country will be planning festivities that involve a lot of dancing and music. Cool!

Please pay a thought and bring forth respectful memories to your past relatives and friends over the next few days. If you feel so inclined then you can enter one of the thousands of pagodas around the country and offer some rice and food, some money or incense. I can assure you that the local people will be more than happy to help and accommodate anything you would like to do in this respect.

Being Pchum Ben, the gig guide is a little light relative to more recent weeks. That doesn't, however, mean there are not some totally smokin' gigs happening this weekend.

It all starts on Thursday in Siem Reap when Awkward Binoculars and Blu will take patrons on a journey through sound at The 1961. Also a new duo will perform at Molly Malones. They are called Auric Eyes. Check out this great cover of the duo doing the Snow Patrol song Chasing Cars.

Also on Thursday in Phnom Penh you can catch the first of two special gigs at MetaHouse. Amanda Bloom will be doing a live performance of her forthcoming album. There is no doubting Amanda's outstanding vocals and lyrics that tell of love and relationships. She has the unique ability to capture the audience in the palm of her hand with just a piano and beautiful, melodic poetry. Should be a very special performance indeed.

The venue follows up on this unique gig with a gig of momentous proportions. The international stars of the DJ console Layo & Bushwacker will be playing at MetaHouse on Friday night. These two superstars of the international DJ arena will be preceded by the great sounds of DJ Flo Trallala, Awkward Binoculars and Blu. What a cool night! Metahouse definitely takes "Venue of the Week" prize this week ;oP. Please note that this gig has a limited number of tickets ($15). You might want to get a ticket in advance to make sure you gain entry.

Also on this weekend is the Euro-Punk rock of BP and the Schkoots. They play at the totally great sound of Memphis on Friday and the totally local rock & roll mecca of Sharkys on Saturday. They are billed as "playing covers of legendary punk bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols as well as original songs written by Bob Passion. The songs are in French, English and Khmer with a frenzied rhythm. With The Schkoots, you’ll live and relive the glory days of Punk!". Cool!

In Kampot this Saturday don't forget to catch the Kampot Playboys at the opening of a brand new venue right on the river - the Naga House. Also, at Paddy Rice on Friday see the new band Jaworski 7 as they play a range of twisted covers.

Altogether a very cool weekend of music.

Talking of very cool happenings, you should check out the following video. The Cambodian Space Project has been performing at the Ubud Writers & Readers  Festival in Bali, Indonesia over this past week. In the audience has been many auspicious people, including Nick Cave and José Ramos-Horta. Nick Cave was kind enough to give Marc Eberle his thoughts on the music of the Cambodian Space Project and even spoke some Khmer. Check it out!

Gig Guide - Thursday the 4th of October, 2012

Hey,

Here's a video you play while you read the rest of this week's wrap ;o). A total classic from the one and only Jimmy Reed that is designed to give rise and export you from your wet season blues (if only they could decide the name of the song ;o)).

Another totally great night on tonight presented by the guys from Wildlife Alliance when they put on their annual fund-raiser party. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the party will support the Wildlife Alliance conservation and wildlife rescue projects in Cambodia. Cool! It is being held at the Ebony Tree restaurant this year and starts at the earlier time of 6:30PM. The night will feature a band all the way from Africa (which part of Africa I do not know) called Afrikana and also the danceable beats of DJ Wez-T. Also enjoy a totally wow display of swing dancing by  PPP Swings.

A new venue opens in Siem Reap on Friday night on Pub street. It is called The DogHouse and will feature 4 DJs. The ARTillery Cafe will feature Rhiannon Johnson and Ritchy Boisson for their Friday night live music show. Cool! The Harem Shisha Lounge are throwing a Bollywood Party this Friday and will feature DJ Strike on the console. Smokin'!  Sharkys bring a band all the way from Vietnam this weekend called Alternative Medicine. They are an acoustic rock band and it is the first time they have played in Cambodia. They will play both on Friday and Saturday night.

Saturday night sees the return of the Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra to Equinox as well as the much anticipated return of DJ Tech 12  and the GhettoBlasters to Pontoon

In coming weeks look for the opening of another new venue in Kampot called the Naga House as well as the return of the Grass Snake Union and Balgass Gypsy Jazz. Also expect The Schkoots to play the Memphis Pub and Sharkys. Super-cool!

Also coming up is the so called 9th International Music Festival - a series of classical music gigs at the CJCC, Intercon and MetaHouse

Also, Amanda Bloom will make a special gig at the MetaHouse  next Thursday when she presents songs from her new album, including this one that was recorded at Karma Studio's in Thailand recently.

Other new album releases are also expected. This includes the second album from Dub Addiction - totally cool band - check them out on the latest chapter from the Tuk Tuk Sessions.

Also expect some totally great remixes coming from Krom Monster. Here is a taste of what you might expect.

These latter two coming through the Metal Postcards label.
