The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Thursday the 10th of January, 2012

This weeks Leng Pleng Wrap has been written by guest writer Scott 'Scoddy' Bywater

Welcome to the weekend. Here we are at the tail end of that strange season where most activities have been disrupted by the odd rhythm of seasonal holidays, where so many of us have been seeing to family responsibilities, either out of town or hosting visitors, compounded by the high season spike in the tourist numbers. Things are starting to get back to whatever passes for normal. If you were away, welcome back, we missed you. If you're not back yet, we still miss you.

And if you're here, you can get the party started on Friday night with a double bill at Showbox, the charismatic chaos of Tango & Snatch meeting the Khmer free-will assertions of AntiFate, a splendid combination if there ever was one. Check out a sneak preview from the new album from Tango & Snatch HERE - entitled OH! Baby Baby

The big event this weekend is the Equinox 7th anniversary celebrations. Equinox has been a strong supporter of music in Phnom Penh over the last few years, and the celebration will be marked with free barbecue and the high energy bluegrass freight-train-driving-tough-turpentine-propelled menace that is Grass Snake Union. Reports are that there will be a number of special guests to augment it, so the sweat-soaked mosh pit is expected to be bouncing like a.... a sweat-soaked mosh pit.

Among the new developments this coming week is a brand new open mic at Sundance on 172 Street, hosted by recent returnee RJ Marshall, who has already started to make his presence felt behind microphones across the city (check-out a preview from RJ HERE). Aspiring and veteran songwriters are especially welcome.   In addition, this weekend sees the return of Sunday afternoon sessions at Rubies Wine Bar (featuring your humble servant and guests).

In wider news, check out a new initiative from APLE Cambodia - Action Pour Les Enfants: http://www.indiegogo.com/aplecambodia. The Opening Doors Countryside Tour of Cambodia will take place over two weeks at the end of March in an effort to raise awareness about child sexual abuse. Headlining will be the Kampot Playboys – the lads are also playing on Thursday night at Madi's Place in Kampot, don't miss them if you're in town.

Kheltica will play there special Sunday Family Sessions at Le Jardin the Sunday. Checkout this video taken during their recent gig in Laos to get things happening.

Also, checkout this video of a totally special Cambodian instrument called a Kse Diev.

From your special guest correspondent, who after two months is still damn glad to be back, now it's over to all you fellow musicians and punters to make Cambodian stages come alive yet again.
