The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting the 7th of February, 2013

Welcome back to a short wrap of the nightlife which manifests from the totally happening local live music and DJ scene. Last week's guide was not released due to the uncertainty in the status of most performances. This week things are back to relative normality and the platter of gigs on offer extend from today (Thursday) all the way through until Sunday night. Cool!

If you are quick you can jump in the car and get to the gig by Kok Thlok in Kampot this weekend as they help open the brand new Champa Resort. Also, Scott Bywater continues his Riverhouse Bistro performances with a solo gig tonight starting at 8:00PM. The regular Expat SoundSystem gig which happens every Thursday at MetaHouse features a spoken-word performance by Antonio Pineda. This will happen after the venue hosts a Sundance Film Festival award-winning movie called Teddy Bear in which the performer appeared.

Friday sees a set of 6 totally great gigs. It will be possible to catch more than one of them in their entirety because there are some earlier start times. The Grass Snake Union kick off Friday with a gig the way gigs were performed back in the days before amplifiers, elaborate stage set-ups and acoustic/electric instrument. They are using only one microphone for the whole band!! You can try Le Jardin's wonderful menu as you stomp your feet to their blend of bluegrass/Americana music. The gig starts at 7:00PM. There is also an early start at the Riverhouse Lounge this same day as the venue celebrates the entering of Chinese New Year with and acrobatic show and a totally amazing traditional Lion dance - not to miss. The Digital Punks and DJ Tam will enter into the fray later that night.

A huge night is expected on Friday night at La Croisette when the Cambodian Space Project tee up with local outrage DJ Marcus Mucous and The Readers Wives from Criminal Records. It will likely be a totally great night of dance and alternative Khmer 60's psychedelia together with Indie, New Wave, Britpop and Punk rock - all on the new stage put in during the venues recent reconstruction.

Saturday sees and equally pleasurable and danceable series of gigs as the previous two days. Kheltica  appear at the FCC Phnom Penh whilst The Fumes can be inhaled at Sharkys. If you are in Sihanoukville then I totally recommend you to get to the Otres Beach Market to catch the artistry of Gobeshite together with DJ K'Dam - not to be missed. Also, if you couldn't see them on Fridayt then the Cambodian Space Project will be playing at Equinox on Saturday night - definitely a great sound from this band at this venue. If you can't make it to that gig then make sure you get into UStream and the live video feed that the venue makes available through the software - you can install an app fro your smart-phone and get into it from wherever you are. Search for 'equinoxcambodia' to get a positiove search in the software.

Also on Saturday night, a double-bill at Metahouse when M. Boegner and A. Kunapongkul play a range of classical music from Beethoven, Dvořák, Janáček and Pärt. That is followed up by some Indie sets by DJ F.U.D. Cool!

That is not where the weekend of music ends however as Sunday afternoon dishes up three more gigs, including another celebration of the new Chinese year at Nova.

Also news that Krom is back in the studio completing the soundtrack for the forthcoming Australian documentary "In search of CAMP 32" with all tracks expected to be in place for the Camp 32 editors by the end of next week. Krom has also commenced recording twelve new Krom songs for their second album “NEON DARK” that will be released in April of 2013. Sophea Chamroeun and Sopheak Chamroeun will share lead vocals on many of the Neon Dark songs, working with Krom composer, guitarist and vocalist Christopher Minko. Look for the band as they play at selected venues this February and March.

Two inserted pieces for you on the way out of this wrap. The first being a video from the Grass Snake Union. You can see the band at Le Jardin early this Friday and just a note to let you know that the band will soon be without founding member / lead vocalist / guitarist TJ Brown  soon. So get down there and see them whilst you still can. Here is a video of their original composition Get Situated

Also, a sample from the console of Anthony Mrugacz at Equinox and a song recorded live at the venue duting a gig by traditional Khmer-Western fusion band Kok Thlok.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
