The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 21st of February, 2013

Hey,

The outrageously cool weekend of fundamentally smokin' gigs from last weekend has not stopped ! It just keeps getting better this weekend.

Didier Wampas  is one of those truly rare artists who just keep getting better with age. The band he fronts, Les Wampas, is an alternative Indie-rock band hailing from France. They first formed in 1983 and since then have released 13 albums - their latest being "Les Wampas sont la preuve que Dieu existe" ("Les Wampas are Proof that God Exists"). Always on the off-beat, always taking the alternative path with an artistic verve, always full-on energy - expect a totally packed house and energy driven gig of outrageous proportions this Friday at Sharkys when he will play together with Dr. Krach and the Nurses from Bangkok. Here are a couple of videos samples from the band. The first, Rimini is about the death of the famous Italian Marco Pantani cyclist who was found dead in an hotel of the Italian seaside resort of  Rimini.

The artist is in town to promote a movie called "Bangkok Jam". It is an independent musical film directed by Lim Channalen and Jean-Philippe Ury with Didier Wampas in the male lead. You can see an excerpt below:

Note that there is a $3 entry charge for this gig - you might want to get there earlier rather than later. The gig is supported by local band Thom Thom. Doors open at 7:00PM.

That same same night at the new venue known as the Show Box you will have to chance to hear, see and taste excepts from the new album from Tango & Snatch. The gig is a pre-cd release of their debut album "rock and roll machine DEATHMATCH". The first thirty people who show up will get a free CD. The gig has Squishy in support.

On Friday you can also catch the Cambodian Space Project as they make their debut at another one of the capitals hottest new venues called The Village. Cool!

Saturday sees the return of Scoddy and the Quality Drops at Equinox who have not been seen since their debut at the same venue over 2 years ago. The band is spearheaded by well known local musician and poet Scott Bywater and now sports a line-up that will feature three-part harmonies.

Another rarely seen band that is playing at the third of the capitals newest venues is the reclusive Krom who will perform at The Doors on Saturday night. This is a unique ensemble that features the Mississippi Delta finger-picking style of band leader Minko with the fluid and melodic Khmer vocals of Sophea Chamroeun. The songs often tell of love and heartbreak but with a unique Wester-Khmer fusion aspect. The songs also feature rasping, ochre-coloured vocals from Minko and the occassional slide work from Jimmy Baeck.

DJ and electronic musicians-wise this weekend - you can start with DJ Tonle Dub and Amplifire on Thursday evening. Here is a sample of what to expect from the latter of these two artists:

On Saturday night you can see and hear the late night return of the Golden Crew at Pontoon. Cool. People into the hip-hop and rap of Gobeshite and Disbeats can now download their two releases - Fun and Games here: http://mgcmusic.bandcamp.com/album/fun-and-games and Blood, Sweat and Beers here http://mgcmusic.bandcamp.com/album/blood-sweat-and-beers

In regard to open-mic and jam nights around the country - there has been a relative explosion of such in the past year. A look at the regular gigs sees eleven such events every week. The newest of these is set to occur at The Village every Monday. The venue makes available both a drum set and a keyboard for the open mic. Might be worth a look for all local musicians.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
