The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 18th of April, 2013

Hope everyone survived the occasionally calamitous Khmer New Year and were not too overawed by a season that is most often punctuated by century-old ceremonies and over-amplified verbal paraphernalia. It's all part of living in the totally wonderful and totally eclectic Cambodian society.

Diego Dimarques kicks off the musical weekend this week with a gig tonight (Thursday) at the Doors. Diego is from the very well known ensemble called the Gypsy Kings and was featured in many of their songs. Including the classic Bombaleo.

Totally worth getting down to see this performer -  definitely one of the jewels of the local live music scene.

Scott 'Scoddy' Bywater brings his songs to run around in the garden in the early evening this Friday. It will be a busy night for the local live music scene's favourite son as he will later be appearing with James Speck  and RJ Marshall at The Opera Cafe in a series of songs featuring the 3-part harmonies of The Quality Drops. Cool! Friday also sees the continued return of Holliday in Cambodia at the best beer-swilling music venue on the riverfront - Paddy Rice. Another totally anticipated return to to local stage this Friday will be Station to Station who will extol the wonderful array of songs emanating from the vocals chords and fretboard of the thin white duke - David Bowie. This cover band features some of the scene's best known and talented musicians and are sure to put on a totally great show. I have to mention DJ Stinkahbell also - if only for the fact that I just love the name ;o). This most well appellated of DJs will perform late into the wee hours of Friday night / Saturday morning at Pontoon.

Another brand new ensemble will hit the stage at two venues this week. It is Kin Jazz and I would suggest to you that these gigs will be exceptionally cool. The ensemble brings together some of the the local scene's crème de la crème of international jazz aficionados. Totally encourage you to get down to one of these gigs.

It might be hard though because there is an array of other smokin' gigs on. Not the least of which will be the outrageously extolled original tunes of Splitter at Sharkys on Saturday night. The gig will also include support from Sangvar Day. Also Krom's Night of the Noir will be played at the Doors as will the internationally accomplished Brett Creswell be playing at the Village. As you can see - a totally and wonderfully eclectic music scene on offer.

For a weekend totally and outrageously full of cool music gigs I just have to mention the very special party that will happen at the Memphis Pub on Saturday night. The Memphis Pub is the country's longest runningand most-consistent dedicated live music venue. The house band - Rock Xpress, fronted by one of the country's premier rock guitarist, Thiem Bona - has been making the Phnom Penh airwaves vibrate in a totally and authentically Khmer rock & roll vibe for more than 14 years!! First starting off as the Blues Rock Cafe in front of what is now the Himawari, the band and venue then moved across town to the legendary Why Not Bar. I say legendary because anyone that was lucky enough to witness the open-jam nights on a Friday night back in 2000 / 2001 would have seen the people spilling onto Street 63 every week. It was standing room only..... and with only enough standing room to get your beer to your lips. A totally great set of memories there! After the successes of these gigs the band opened their own venue at what is now known as the Memphis Pub. There is live music every night from Mondays until Saturdays.

It will be a very special celebration this week as the band launches a new album. It is an celebratory album in the fact that is truly a contemporary Cambodian tribute to the 60s Khmer Rock. This is a live album and features some great musicianship. It has on it some great fretboard runs from Thiem Bona together with some smokin' solos from Bun Sambath on keys and Sokha the Outrageosly Smokon' Sax Player on Sax. Sokha also gives a couple of great performances on vocals on the tracks Cyclo and Neary Sexy. The last two tracks also feature keyboard player Yang Pov who also does a great job on the vocals. The line-up is rounded of with the steady beat of Kim Tep on drums and the amazingly talented bass of Danny Lumen. Also listen for the uniquely female flavour of Ya on vocals - great stuff. This album will be totally worth getting and will be available at the launch party this Saturday the 20th of April. You can get a 'taste' of some of the songs that will be available on the album here:

If you are lucky enough to be in Kampot this weekend then there are two totally happening gigs on. The first is Durian Funk Band's first foray outside of the capital. It will happen on Friday night at the Bodhi Villa. On Saturday night the Kampot Playboys are giving Justin huge 'byr-bye' party as he travel off to fairer lands. The band will play the Naga House starting at 9:00PM. Should be a totally great weekend on the south-east coast.

In Siem Reap the rock-blues of Rhythm Conspiracy will be available at Molly Malones on both Saturday and Sunday nights. The bands features local musical legend - Tommy Nick. Cool!

Last but in no way the least is an especially unique performance of live art happening at the Java Cafe next Wednesday. The gig is billed as a performed poetry in soundscape that will be written, arranged, performed, improvised, captured and set free by some of the local scenes most prominent live and electronic musicians and artists. Sounds very interesting and unique.

Also not to be forgotten is a mention of a great article written by Julien Poulsen and published earlier this week by Leng Pleng. The article is a short chronicle of the life and times of local and international music frontman Ian Rowlett Anderson. The article pays tribute to the man and his passion for the music lifestyle as well as his unique sense of humour. The full article can be read HERE.

I will finish off with a video from international legendary DJ Mimetic who will perform a DJ set together with DJ Andy Freak and somevisual artistry by VJ Emma at MetaHouse this coming Saturday. I totally boon for lovers of this genre. Mimetic is currently working with the legendary group Art Zoyd from France and has been doing so since 2000. Art Zoyd have a very high artistic standing in the avant-garde electronica and progressive rock scene. They have been producing music since 1968 and have been widely influential ever since. Mimetic's music is described as sharp intelligent dancefloor electronica with powerful rich kicking beats. Cool!

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
