The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 9th of May, 2013

Another great weekend of totally smokin' gigs.

This week the musical calendar features a party put on by The Village in celebration of Dub Addiction's first album release. The essential raggamuffin album is entitled Dub Addiction Meets Kampuchea Rockers Uptown and it is available for download through Metal Postcard productions here or, presumably, you will be able to pickup a copy of the album at the gig. The party will start around 8pm with DJ CAB spinning sub bass grooves, followed by a performance of Pou Khlaing and Nen Tum before it has it's peak with a one and a half hour live performance of Dub Addiction. Cool! Expect a $5 entry fee for this gig.

This album is a classic piece of work from the local music scene and I totally urge you to get yourself a copy. The songs are energetic and are sometimes cruisey, sometimes psychedelic with totally danceable rhythms covering reggae-ragga-dub electronica interweaved with a totally amazing array of multi-ethnic flavours - dominated by Khmer lyrics. The quality of the intricate sound and production is fundamentally enjoyable and involves an amazing array of sounds and instrumentation. Similar to the release of the Cambodian Space Project album earlier this year, the release of this album marks an auspicious point in the local music scene.

As you will see on the right of this page, Leng Pleng will now host a special section within the publication that features a list of the latest albums released by local performers and made available for download across the world wide web.

This weekend Equinox are featuring the very special WASH performance with the poetry of Scott Bywater and the fluid soundscape and visualities presented through Warren Daly, Alex Leonard and Hal FX. An acoustic session presented by Joe Wrigley will open the performance. On Saturday night at the same venue catch the outrageous rock and roll pounded out through the amplifiers of totally original band Splitter

Sharkys have a new musical edition to their regular Thursday Ladies Night now with Ministry of Sound member DJ Flipper. The same venue hosts the rockable Oscar's Band on Friday and a double bill on Saturday - being the Australian duo Ringtail followed by the Lazy Drunks. Also look for RingTail as they take to the stage for Le Jardin's Friday evening performances. The same venue will also host some live music this Sunday afternoon with the Le Jardin Mangos.

The Silk Garden in Siem Reap present a special celebration earlier on Friday. It is an original music creation by Mikael Gwilham and Kim Yen in tribute to Breton Auguste Pavie. Sounds interesting. Another tribute night is available at MetaHouse on Friday night when RNA play a tribute to Bob Marley.

On Saturday night Kin Jazz will play at the Opera Cafe - totally worth it this gig. Also see Krom who will play a return gig at The Doors just north of Wat Phnom. If possible you should also travel the 75km south of Phnom Penh to the Wat Opot Community Center. There you will be able to join Cambodian band The Underdogs as they participate in WOMP - the Wat Opot Musical Project - that is being put together by James Speck of Up 2U Mango. The project music program supports music teaching and performance opportunities for Cambodian youth. Cool! The performance starts at 12:00 noon this Saturday.

Tuesday has a couple of very special gigs also as a new "ukulele circle" is being formed with any interested ukulele enthusiasts being encouraged to join. Also the birthday of the owner of the Sundance Saloon is being celebrated with a special open-mic.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
