The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 30th of May, 2013

Another very special week in the local music scene this week with the arrival of Dengue Fever. The band will arrive tomorrow (Friday) and play two gigs at the FCC (one in Phnom Penh and one in Siem Reap) and then play at Koh Pich as part of the Memory International film festival organized by Bophana. If you were hoping for tickets to the Phnom Penh show at the FCC then tickets have already sold out - however there may be a few tickets left for the Siem Reap shows. You would need to contact the FCC. Anyway, people in the capital can always catch the band at the Wednesday gig at Koh Pich.

Leng Pleng was lucky enough to catch up with the band over this past week and we have managed to second a short interview. Ethan Holtzman was travelling Cambodia in 1997 and was inspired by the golden era of Cambodian rock & roll. He returned to the United States where he founded Dengue Fever with his brother Zac - a band based on this special and exotic genre. Over 10 years have passed since then and the band has met with amazing success. They have toured the world with their upbeat blend of garage rock mixed with psychedelia, they won a bunch of music awards, they have been invited by some of the best known musicians to collaborate and have written scores for many films, TV and commercials. Ethan took time off his busy schedule this week to asnwer a few questions for us:

Great to see the band is coming back to Cambodia again. Can you give us a rundown of the tour this year. Where will you play? Will you be joined by local performers like last time? What's the plan?
We fly out of Los Angeles on May 29th.  Once we land in Phnom Penh we have the afternoon off to acclimate to the time change, warmer temperatures and higher humidity levels.  The following day we will be performing at the FCC in Phnom Penh (May 31).  Then we have an early morning drive up to Siem Reap.  We will perform at the FCC in Siem Reap (June 1st). I’m not sure who we are playing with.  We always like to collaborate with local Khmer artists.  Last year we played with Nimol’s brothers band Animation.  We also had a loose jam with Master Kong Nai before our set in Phnom Penh.
Also on June 5th we will play on Diamond Island at the MEMORY! International Film Heritage Festival, and on June 7th in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam at Cargo Bar@ Q4.

The band recently played in New York at the 'Season of Cambodia Festival 2013'. Did the band enjoy the festival? Did you get a chance to see, meet and play with some of the other performers? If so - what was your impression?

Yes, New York was a blast.  The club was packed with lots of our friends from Cambodia, the US, and even the UK.  It was great to catch up with everybody.  So many creative folks like filmmaker Davy Chou, artists Kanitha Tith and Linda Saphan. Bochan performed before us and sounded great!  I liked her version of 'Chnam Oun Dop Pram Muy'.

You have collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Arn Chhorn Pond and the Cambodian Living Arts before. Can you tell us more about the relationship - how it got started and do you have any more projects on the drawing board?
When Dengue Fever first toured in Cambodia, back in 2005, we met up with Dickon Verey, who is now SEA Producer.  He introduced us to Cambodian Living Arts......(CLICK HERE to see the full interview).

There is also plenty more happening for the local music scene this weekend. Japanese acoustic singer-songwriter Masahiro Watabe can be heard tonight (Thursday) at The Village and aficionados in music of the classical type will totally enjoy Anton Isselhardt and Tara Mar's renditions of  the baroque era of Handel and Bach at MetaHouse early on the same day. Later on at the same venue catch the smooth electonic tracks of DJ Wez-T and DJ Flo. Cool.

Scott Bywater continues Le Jardin's open-air Friday concerts at 7:00PM this week. A totally relaxed atmosphere with great food. Lady & the Tramp move their songs set over to The Doors (north of Wat Phnom) this week and Jaworski7 return to Sharkys with an great portrayal of carefully crafted and well selected and performed Indie-rock songs. The band plays Equinox on Saturday night. DJ-scene-wise on Friday the RiverHouse will once again host a huge party on the riverfront - this week hosted by international DJ DJ Major Taylor - should be fairly huge - as will the party at Pontoon later on when a posse of DJs host the venue's Flight of the Mantis. Cool!

Also on this Friday at Equinox will be a totally great gig as one of the local scene's best bands, Dub Addiction, teams up with international artist and reggae empress Imojah who is currently touring south-east Asia direct from the Carribean. The combination of these totally professional artists should be something very, very special indeed. Get down there! The same combination of artists will also be playing various other venues over this coming musical week - including Sharkys on Monday and the cozy Opera Cafe next Wednesday. Cool!

On Saturday catch the captial's newest and the most coolest of reggae bars with DJ U on the rooftop at Dusk Till Dawn (opposite Pontoon). More on this bar in coming weeks. Another gig of note on Saturday will be one of the last performances of a totally enjoyable band - Up 2 U Mango who will be playing at the Opera Cafe. Always a great atmosphere with this band and their debut at this venue will be a much anticipated event. For all the Brits the British Chamber of Commerce is hosting a garden party at the Himawari featuring the high-energy and totally danceable stalwarts of the local music scene - Kheltica. Great!

On Saturday - only for a one hour set - you can be totally inundated by a new band that seems like they might have a rather cadaverous approach to their music. They are called Psychotic Reactions and they feature some of the Kingdoms best known Punk rockers. The flyer for the band says it all. Catch their inaugural gig at the Memphis Pub this weekend.

On Sunday James Speck together with the Symphony Music School host an event showcasing the talents of the teachers and students of the school plus of the members of the Wat Opat Musical Project (WOMP). This will be at the Hotel Intercontinental. Also catch Ringtail as they perform the Sunday afternoon gig at Le Jardin and introduce us to the brand new venue known as the Boomerang.

Coming up look for the return of Davis Zunk to the land of wrong-way drivers as he comes across from Ho Chi Minh City with his band of degenerate hillbillies in the form of The Wunderlusters. Super cool!

Before I go I must mention two new panels that we are now disseminating through the web site and the weekly emailed newsletter. The first, which you may have seen already, is a list of current album releases from local performers that are available for download from the Internet. If you believe that anything should be added to this list then please feel free to let us know. Also, we have now added a Latest News panel that will keep all punters up to date with the latest news from the local live music and DJ scene. This will be updated on an irregular basis as news comes in. In general it will be best to keep an eye on this panel in the web site because that is where most turnover will happen.

OK, cheers and from Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
