The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 20th of June, 2013

Music is a unique thing. It is so fundamental, so primitive, and so significant. It is something that is able to reach inside us and talk directly to our hearts and bring out our most meaningful and elemental emotions. It helps us to cry, helps us remember, helps us to dance, helps us to smile and laugh and helps us to love. Music helps us exist. Music let's us express who we are. Music says things that words cannot say by themselves. Music exists within us, it exists all around us and it joins us together and can give us a place to belong. Music is all these things, and every year on the 21st of June 2012 music is celebrated all over the world with the Fête de la Musique.

The Fête de la Musique started in France in 1982. You can see a version of how it started on Wikipedia. There are some fundamental precepts to the Fête de la Musique that helps it to be what it is - or what it is supposed to be at least. One of the most important aspects of the festival is that it is recognized as being non-commercial. The festival aims to celebrate the fact that money came after music and therefore music does not need money to exist. Hence, musicians play for free. It is also supposed to be about musicians playing outside their usual places of performance - out on the street, in railways stations, bus stations, by the riverside - public places where music can be easily heard and shared by all those walking by. Musicians can also be seen to play in hospitals, prisons, orphanages and the likes. Keep your eyes and ears open whilst walking down the street this Friday.

There are several venues hosting Fête de la Musique gigs this year - including the newly opened Slur Bar, the Memphis Pub, Le Bar, Paddy Rice  and various places along the lane area of Siem Reap. Hopefully these venues are not looking at cashing-in on the festival but are offering a good range of drink specials in order to make it a special day - a day out of the ordinary. If you don't see that then I totally encourage you to go to the bar and demand your Fête de la Musique free beer, wine, spirit, soft drink or whatever else takes your fancy. In addition to these venues look for several special performances by Mississippi Skip George who will play at four venues - Romdeng, Trunkh, Java Cafe and finishing off at the Memphis Pub. He is doing this for the festival and, if you are lucky, you might see him with his guitar playing in a Tuk-Tuk between venues.

Before that, however, there are 5 auspicious gigs happening tonight (Thursday), not the least of which is the Cambodian Space Project playing at Gasolina in support of IFEX (International Freedom of Exchange - a global network aimed at defending and promoting freedom of expression)  and the CCHR (Cambodian Center for Human Rights). Also catch Ai Iwasaki (a classically trained vocalist performing Mezzo-soprano) and Claudio Canfora on piano at the Opera Cafe.

Mainly (but not entirely) due to this festival, Friday's gig guide has a total of 22 gigs and 42 performers - in the words of Television Ted - "Wow!" Things just keep getting stronger every week. It is The Klezbodians that are playing at Le Bar and it will be one of the last times you will be able to catch the band before some of the members head to gigs further afield. The band also plays at the Opera cafe on Saturday.

Saturday has a total of 10 gigs on offer - some being the best and coolest bands in the local scene. At Equinox you can get the totally great reggae-ragga beats of Dub Addiction - great venue to see this band. At the FCC Phnom Penh see the Khmer psychedelic rock of the Cambodian Space Project - also an awesome venue for this band and at MetaHouse dance to the spun tunes from the Kimchi Collective.

This same night at Sharkys, Ricky Rotten and the Scumbags cover the entire Sex Pistols album Never Mind the Bollocks plus songs off The Great Rock N Roll Swindle. According to Dave The Punk (manager of Sharkys) Ricky Rotten would currently be, without doubt, the best punk rock singer in the country. He is Phnom Penh's answer to Johnny - and with a name like that why wouldn't he be!?

Also look for some totally great music emanating from The Groove this weekend. Both Friday and Saturday sees some totally great vibes happening from this very, very smooth and cool venue. Well worth getting to see Rhiannon Johnson on Friday evening and Diego Demarques on Saturday evening.

Sunday sees the opening of yet another music venue. This one comes with a special bit of uniqueness in that it is located directly on the Tonle Sap river. It is not on the Phnom Penh side though but  on the Chroy Changvar peninsular. After crossing the Chroy Changvar (Japanese) Bridge take your immediate left (watch out for all the bridge construction stuff happening). Next drive down to the river and take a right and follow the river north for 5 minutes. At 4:00PM Up 2 U Mango will be playing there and so it should make a relatively fun, cool, relaxing and happening Sunday afternoon. Cool!

Later on in the week you will be able to catch a couple of gigs at The Village plus a very special and rare re-appearance of Espresso Thmey at Equinox. Also at the Show Box you can catch a new ensemble known as Rockabilly Box Romp featuring Conrad Keely and members of the Grass Snake Union. It starts early at around 7:30PM and includes rockabilly, BBQ and beers. Sounds totally cool!

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
