The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 1st of August 2013

A totally packed gig guide this week - and it's August! Personally I have stopped trying to predict the local scene and just ride along with it. It's a cool ride - and it's always crazy, fun and happening.

Firstly, a big thank you to Ms. Sokha Kallyan whose task it is now to enter and maintain all the weekly Leng Pleng gigs. Over 100 gigs in today's edition - so a warm applause should please be extended her way.

An example of the crazy, fun ride can be had at the Slur Bar tonight (Thursday) when Kheltica mix it up to portray the more instrumental side of the band's musical buffet. You will see Andre Swartz on rhythm guitar as opposed to bass, Toma Willen off the drums and on bass, and Angie Ang off the piano and on violin. The drums will be more than adequately held down by Luis Pragasam and Jean Claude Dhuez and Daniel Tranchant handle the flutes and whistles action. Totally cool ride - get into it. The band will also play Friday at Le Deli when they will be hosting a traditional French Breton evening starting from 7:30PM. Some of the best cheese, wine and crepes in town apparently.

In Sihanoukville the CU Corner is a place for music and conversation - so that sounds totally cool. Tonight (Thursday) they will be having an open-mic / jam situation happening - so get into it. The acoustic covers and originals of Greg Marino at the Show Box rounds off Thursdays live music sessions. Greg will also be hosting the venue's regular session this Sunday. Groove and chill is the expected vibe this same night at MetaHouse for their Electro Jazz Lounge with DJ Nicomatic. Cool!

The Sunset Sandpit Sessions at Le Jardin will kick off Friday's live music scene again. This week the sessions are featuring Sophie Rose Lewis, RNA and Alex Ung. Totally great scene starting to happen there every week. A HUGE night of punk will be afforded at Sharkys on Friday with the return of the Las Vegas Knockouts as supported by the outrageous Sex Pistols cover band Ricky Rotten & the Scumbags. A totally full-on, high-energy danceable time at the country's number 1 rock & roll venue. Ricky Rotten & the Scumbags will be playing a number of gigs around the traps over the coming month at various venues. Check out a preview here:

A totally full-on rock & roll vibe will also be available at the Show Box that same night with Alternative Medicine. Over the top mayhem and good cheap beer always expected. The Slur Bar will be featuring a new band (to Leng Pleng at least) called the Riverside Ray-Bans - might be worth a look-see.

Live music on Saturday night is dominated by the d├ębut of the Las Vegas Knockouts as the FCC Phnom Penh and 2 sets of the 100% original of Moi Teat at Equinox. Should be a good Saturday night.

Those of you inclined towards the more classical and traditional side of the musical spectrum will be treated to two very special gigs happening over this weekend. The gigs will feature electronic violinist Eugene Park together with the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) Traditional Orchestra and the Gift of Music Ensemble. They will be augmented by performances of the Phare Ponleu Selpak circus troupe. The first gig will occur in Phnom Penh on Saturday. There are no details as to the location or start time at publication but stay tuned as the web site will be updated as soon as the information comes to hand. The second will be on Monday in Siem Reap - see the gig guide for details. Cool! Also in Siem Reap this week you can catch the wonderful return of Scott Allan Knost to Molly Mallones.

Huge amounts of music coming up - not the least of which will be the so-called Vibe Music Fest. This constitutes a number of gigs which will be hosted at the venue The Doors from the 16th to the 25th of August, 2013. It will feature a selection of over 16 of the local scene's live music and DJ performers including Dub Addiction, Amanda Bloom, Euan Gray, Krom and Scott Bywater. Also coming to Sydney, Australia on the 30th of September, 2013 is a concert featuring Australian legends Jimmy Barnes and Diesel as well as Lior and Arj Barker and others. Why do I mention it here in a publication for the local Cambodian music scene? I mention it because the concert is fully in support for the Cambodian Children's Trust (CCT) and is entitled Concert for Cambodia. Any one with friends or relatives in Sydney might want to encourage them to get along. The details can be hooked into HERE. Here is a video of one of the artists Lior:

I will leave you this week with two more videos and a SoundClound sound clip. The first being a collaborative work between Amanda Bloom and Professor Kinski. A very beautiful and inspiring song that will take you to exotic places with bizarre, colourful and alluring flavours. Check it out:

The second is a very long video that features the legendary JJ Cale who passed away at the age of 74 earlier this week. The video is an unearthed session that JJ Cale made with a Leon Russell and a number of other smokin'ly cool cats.

Last but in no way least is the latest song released through the Mekong Sessions. It is a Krom song called Fractured Fragrance that was played on U.S. radio earlier this week and is lifted from the forthcoming album Neon Dark. Get taken far, far away by the amazing, beautiful, drifting slide of Jimmy Baeck.

From Ted, Rob and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
