The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 22nd of August 2013

Khmer and Western music-makers continue to collaborate in style at the Vibe Music Fest this week. Doors Phnom Penh been playing host to the very best of the city's performers over ten days of gigs, and a glance at the line up shows just how much musical talent and diversity there is to be found here. Visit the festival this weekend and you will see that Khmer and international acts are sharing much more than just the wonderfully equipped Doors stage. More importantly for the future scene, musicians are coming together to combine ideas and create new sounds.

Original music is to be found at Vibe Music Fest on Thursday in the shape of Amanda Bloom, performing songs from her newly-recorded album of classical-fusion-pop, accompanied on Cello by the elegant Tara Mar. Amanda is armed with a stack of new material and an exquisite grand piano to compliment her fantastic voice. At this gig you can also catch Khmera, the latest incarnation of Phnom Penh's own No Forever and the 15-year-old Fillipina singing sensation that is Akhia Cyxtiel.

The festival continues with the wonderful Jazz-Ska fusion of Jahzad on Friday. This band's combination of Tenor Sax, Trombone, Upright Bass, Drums and... Banjo(!) will test the Doors soundsystem to the limit. The fusion moves forward on Saturday with a show featuring the legendary Master Kong Nay and Krom. While the internationally-renowned Chapei master exhibits traditional Khmer music and storytelling, Krom will provide delicate acoustic music with Khmer vocals from Sophea and Sopheak and 3D Mapping visuals from VJ Roberto. Be sure to obtain your $3 ticket from the venue in advance of this show to avoid disappointment.

Electronic Universe offer another unique experience at Meta House on Thursday with Phnom Penh's only Live Ambient Fusion Outfit, featuring an experimental combination of DJ, Guitar, Kaossilator, Flute and Trombone. Live music continues early on Friday evening at Le Jardin, where you can catch offerings from Phnom Penh based songwriters Scott Bywater and Jerby Salas Santo, as well as brass player Alan Breen. Originality is a theme running right through this week's program of gigs like the Tonle Sap River, and it is a driving force behind Vibratone, who bring their self-penned set of dub and roots reggae to Slur Bar on Friday night. Music-lovers in Kampot on Friday can pay a visit to the Bodhi Villa and partake in an Australasian flavour of tunes performed on guitar and didgeridoo by the up-and-coming Leroy Saratonin.

Those with a hunger for bass and beats can make a detour from the Riverside to BKK later on Friday, when the Cambodian Bass Project will be spinning Dub, Tech, Ragga and D&B at 3Mangos Guesthouse. Note that DJs Simon C Vent, Tonle Dub and associates were scheduled to play this gig at Showbox on st.330, but a last minute venue change means you must tell your Tuk-Tuk driver to drop you on st.360. If awe-inspiring guitars are more your thing, we would usher you gently towards Memphis Pub, where international sensation Tobi will take to the stage. Cross your callused fingers for a collaboration with in-house guitar legend Bona. UK rising star and 9-time Grammy nominee Tobi has been making waves during his current visit to Cambodia, stay tuned to this channel for an interview and gig report from our roving reporter on the ground.

Things are so vibrant and bustling on the capital's music scene it can get confusing sometimes. We are not sure which came first, the Cambodian Bass Project or the Cambodian Space Project, but fans of Cambodia's best-loved psychedlic-Khmer-garage-rock group will not want to miss Saturday night at La Croisette, when vocalist Srey Channthy will perform a special set of acoustic songs with the help of some hand-picked musical friends. If you manage to miss this gig in the dilemma-inducing array of choices this weekend, then head to Equinox on Wednesday, when Bong Channthy teams up with Scott Bywater for an acoustic set of Khmer classics.

The Vibe Fest wraps up the weekend's music on Sunday night at Doors, when local heartthrobs Charlie Corrie and Euan Gray perform sets of purely original songs. We have to assume that both of these guys have some sort of arrangement with the Prince of Darkness, as they possess the enviable combination of spine-tingling vocals, incredible musicianship and superb songwriting together with movie-star good looks. We are informed that as this is the end of the festival, a party atmosphere might bring other musicians to the stage, perhaps including Vibe director Gabi Faja, who may deserve a glass of wine after putting the Vibe Music Fest together in such a short time frame. Doors and other venues in Phnom Penh have invested a lot into their sound systems and stages recently, and this sort of commitment shows an eye towards the music scene in the coming years, not just the coming months and weeks.

Enjoy the musical riches available over the next few days, and we leave you with a video-flavour of Phnom Penh favourites Station to Station, set to return to a stage near you very soon.
