The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 8th of August, 2013

Not only is the local music scene in a constant state of expansion it seems but also a constant state of change. There is an extraordinary number of  new bands and performers that pop in and out of the Leng Pleng gig guide - sometimes comprised of re-hashed performers from other bands and sometimes something new. Sometimes a real gem slowly emerges from the chaos and hectic coagulations of local musicians. Slowly the scene finds an identity, a niche, a genre in which to portray the fundamental changes that affect everyone's lives living in such a land of contrast, beauty and vulnerability.

In small and certain ways it already has. The fusion of the western guitar licks over Khmer and 'Khmer Ler' back-beats together with amazing local melodic vocals and dubbed lyrics makes a unique backdrop to the music scene. Add to that a number of local western bands who are not at all apprehensive in portraying their own compositions on the local stages. And finally a small, unique and very select group extraordinary individuals who have stumbled upon Cambodia from great heights to find the alluring nature of Cambodia's freedom, uncomplicated lifestyle, generosity of spirit and genuine smiles to be something they cannot ignore. People like Philippe Javelle, Ritchy Boisson, Conrad Keely, Amanda Bloom, Julien Poulson, Euan Gray, Seb Adnot, Jan Mueller - to mention just a few.

A similar situation with venues too. There have been a number of classic live music venues over the years which have moved on - The Blues Rock Cafe, Talkin' to a Stranger, Miles Bar, The Chinese House, Rory's Pub, The Art Cafe, Maxines (Snow's Bar), The Cavern, Studio 182  and now (unfortunately) Rubies. A number of classic venues that are still around - Equinox, Sharkys, The FCC Phnom Penh, La Croisette, The Memphis Pub, The Alley Cat Cafe, the Bodhi Villa, Paddy Rice, The X-Bar and MetaHouse. Now there are a number of new live music venues that see to have settled on the space between restaurant and live music venue, places such as The Village, The Doors, The Latin Quarter, The RiverHouse Bistro and Le Jardin. Still other new venues which have dedicated themselves directly to bar-music venue space, such as The Slur Bar, The ShowBox, and The Led Zephyr. Sometimes it doesn't work but mostly it does and most of the time the local scene has a totally great time along the way. Due to these great venues, the local music scene is slowly starting to become a place where other cities in the region look and admire.

I shall pop out of my reflective mood now and focus more on the task at hand - this week's gig guide. Tonight (Thursday) at The Village Amanda Bloom plays her first gig since recording her latest album. She will play together with the beautiful Tara Mar on Cello. The Scottish man you will see on guitar at Molly Malones tonight will be Scott Allan Knost and the outrageously loud and obnoxious (but totally cool) sound emanating from the Slur Bar will be from the song book of the Sex Pistols as extolled by Ricky Rotten & the Scumbags. Also on Friday look for Jet Set at The Village and the Riverside Ray-Bans at Paddy Rice. Cool!

On Friday, you have just got to get down to enjoy the totally dulcet vibes that will carry you all the way until the wee ours at The Groove. It will be Rhiannon Johnson, Barry Spiers and Ritchy Boisson who will take you there. Probably one of the most incognito and most coolest of live music bars in Phnom Penh. People in Siem Reap are in for a couple of totally cool nights this weekend when Dub Addiction take to the stage. They will play the Silk Garden on Friday and The Laundry Bar on Saturday. I totally encourage all Siem Reapeans to get down there.

As mentioned, Rubies sadly closed their doors last weekend and, as such, the last of the Sunday Sundowner Sessions at Rubies was heard last Sunday at 4:00PM....... :o( ......... . No worries though ....... :o)....... because that didn't stop the music ! The Alley Cat Cafe has picked up where that left off and the sessions will still be on in the small street that comes off street 19 behind the National Museum starting at 5:00PM. Totally cool!

Huge amounts of music coming up with a packed stage at The Doors as well as a long list of performers coming to Equinox, MetaHouse, Show Box, Slur Bar and  The Village. Also get ready for the return of Cambojam as the band has re-coagulated and reformed for 2013. More news on that coming up. Check out this totally happening, totally cool and totally outrageoulsy danceable video from the band.

Leaving you this week with a tune from Amanda Bloom entitled  All You Need. A much more upbeat piece lifted from her new forthcoming album. Check it out!

From Ted, Rob and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
