The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Gig Guide - Week Commencing Thursday the 12th September 2013

OK so I admit I’m still buzzing from the excitement of last week’s launch party for the Leng Pleng mobile app. We called it the Leng Pleng Mix and it was an extravaganza of music, click the link for some great photos from Ken Edgar:

...and another fantastic set from Jeremie at Film Noir:

My personal highlight was watching Television Ted leap on to the stage with Cambodian Space Project and blast the microphone with fearsome harmonica, whilst spinning around like a whirling dervish possessed by the spirit of Little Walter.

Back at The Village tonight, Amanda Bloom brings a touch of class to BKK1 with her trio featuring piano, cello and bassoon. The style is classical but Amanda is a songwriter as well as being an amazing singer and pianist, and she creates a sound that is really her own.

Also on Thursday, raise at glass at Paddy Rice to mark the 3rd birthday of Electric Eclectic Limelight Jukebox Jam, or to put it more simply, the Paddy Rice Open Mic. Paddy’s is a hub for expatriate musicians and for many it is their first port of call when arriving in Phnom Penh. You want to form a band? Just go to Paddy Rice on Thursday. Host Jet Odrerir will look after you, he has been doing this since the weekly night began three years ago. You could even visit Paddy’s again this Friday, when Jet’s band Station to Station will be performing their set of Bowie classics.

For something a little more... Rotten - try Sharky Bar on Friday night for some Sex Pistols action with local heroes The Scumbags. The venue gets even heavier on Saturday when rockers Splitter and Sangvar Day raise the decibel level. The walls of this Indochina institution ooze character and like Paddy Rice the guys at Sharky's have long supported the local music scene.

Less head banging and more mind-blowing at Metahouse on Saturday, when the WASH collaboration debut their new work: The Next Horizon. Some explanation is required, as this multimedia performance group cannot be slotted neatly into a genre. At a WASH gig, the frontman reads poetry while the other guys create music and visuals around the poetry. Or perhaps the poetry is recited over the top of the music. No wait, maybe... well its not easy to describe, but I know that Warren DalyAlex LeonardScott Bywater and Hal FX together create something that is musically, visually and intellectually very powerful and very interesting. Note that this is an early show on Saturday from 7pm to 9pm.

Another great venue and great artist combine later on Saturday when The Rhiannon Johnson Quartet take to the stage at Doors Phnom Penh. Rhiannon became a local legend when she started singing with funk outfit Durian. Recently she has been bringing her incredible voice to The Groove on more of a jazz and classic soul tip. When she brings her act to Doors she will bring with her a group of fantastic musicians and a whole lot of style.

Jack always likes to keep his ear pinned to the ground for word of the next thing happening on the scene. I did hear a rumour that Durian are rallying themselves for an Autumn return. This could bring happiness to a lot of dancefloors. Meanwhile Grass Snake Union have partly reformed as Holey Bucket Union, and they are celebrating what would have been Hank Williams’ 90th birthday this month with gigs at Doors and Equinox. Catch them on Friday at Doors for two sets of Country and Bluegrass songs from the pen of a 20th Century giant who shaped modern music.

I’ve heard another careless whisper about a new music venue coming soon to that centre of debauchery, Street 51. One well known bar is opening up a cool live music space in an upstairs room and promises to go until the early hours, which does sound pleasingly sordid. More news about this when I hear it.

Until next time, take care of yourselves out there and do as Jack does: sally forth in search of creative music. Remember that you can access Leng Pleng when on the move, via our mobile app, now fully functioning for iOS and Android. I will leave you with some inspiration in the form of a new video from Amanda Bloom, sharing her monumental talent with what she modestly describes as ‘just a quick improvisation’ on piano.
