The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 25th of April, 2013

Hey,

The comment of "high-teens" I passed a couple of weeks ago is certainly not holding up this week. More than 32 unique gigs in this week's guide. That doesn't include the Regular Gigs (you can see them within the right-hand-side section of the web site or at the bottom of the weekly email) and if you include those then there are total of about 55 live music, open-mics and DJ events on around the country this week. Totally smokin'!

Thursdays are are the new Fridays local-music-gig-guide-ly speaking. Six gigs on tonight (Thursday), not the least of which is Sylvie singing at the Opera Cafe. Personally I totally enjoy this venue very much as it has a good location and cool atmosphere right within the hustle and bustle of Daun Penh. Mix that with some great keys, vocals, beers, wines and friends and there you have yourself a great night out. be patient with the service as they are only recently opened. The gorgeous Rhiannon Johnson plays again with her quartet at The Village this same night and Diego Dimarques makes another Gypsy Rumba performance at The Doors. Various DJ gigs round out the day at the RiverHouse, MetaHouse and Tepui.

There are a few new performers this week. Mississippi Skip George, Smokin' Kenny Smith and Frisco Tony team up at MetaHouse for a unique early gig on Friday. This starts at 6:00PM and is followed by a movie shot in Kampot by one of the ensembles members. After this you can enjoy the bass:session versus Dub Club gig upstairs. The unsurpassed quality jazz of Kin Jazz is also a relatively new ensemble and features members from GTS Jazz together with Euan Gray. The band will play Friday at the Doors.

Equinox have two gigs on this weekend. On Saturday the best funk band in town will play their last gig. They are of course Durian Funk Band and they will be starting at about 9:00PM. Get down there. On Friday the original tunes of Jerby Santos and Jaworski 7 can be heard. Also a great band of which to dance and enjoy.

Sharkys also present two bands this weekend with the return of the Kampot Peppers on Saturday being the highlight. This band features the cruisey sliding blues from Shawn Miller on guitar. A must see for blues aficionados.

Other gigs of note this weekend include Station to Station at Paddy Rice and a new ensemble, Jet Set, who play at the Village on Saturday night. Le Jardin on Street 360 continue there early Friday live music sessions this week with Sophie Rose Lewis and Ziad Samman. A great place for food and drink straight from work. The Showbox is having an Afro Swag party this Friday - it starts at 10:00PM. Also look for a couple of gigs of British pop from Ritchy & Phil this weekend. On Sunday DJ Sequence and the Kimchi Collective play their most special of DJ sets on the riverfront at the Quay Hotel. Cool!

After more than one and a half years in production the new Dub Addiction album has finally been officially released through international label MetalPostcards. Of exceptional quality and all original and locally-driven songs, I totally urge you to get a copy. You can get yours by clicking the picture below:

Also, soon to hit Phnom Penh will be relatively huge international band The Rooftops. They hail from Australia and are the band led by Euan Gray. Should be totally awesome.

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 18th of April, 2013

Hey,

Hope everyone survived the occasionally calamitous Khmer New Year and were not too overawed by a season that is most often punctuated by century-old ceremonies and over-amplified verbal paraphernalia. It's all part of living in the totally wonderful and totally eclectic Cambodian society.

Diego Dimarques kicks off the musical weekend this week with a gig tonight (Thursday) at the Doors. Diego is from the very well known ensemble called the Gypsy Kings and was featured in many of their songs. Including the classic Bombaleo.

Totally worth getting down to see this performer -  definitely one of the jewels of the local live music scene.

Scott 'Scoddy' Bywater brings his songs to run around in the garden in the early evening this Friday. It will be a busy night for the local live music scene's favourite son as he will later be appearing with James Speck  and RJ Marshall at The Opera Cafe in a series of songs featuring the 3-part harmonies of The Quality Drops. Cool! Friday also sees the continued return of Holliday in Cambodia at the best beer-swilling music venue on the riverfront - Paddy Rice. Another totally anticipated return to to local stage this Friday will be Station to Station who will extol the wonderful array of songs emanating from the vocals chords and fretboard of the thin white duke - David Bowie. This cover band features some of the scene's best known and talented musicians and are sure to put on a totally great show. I have to mention DJ Stinkahbell also - if only for the fact that I just love the name ;o). This most well appellated of DJs will perform late into the wee hours of Friday night / Saturday morning at Pontoon.

Another brand new ensemble will hit the stage at two venues this week. It is Kin Jazz and I would suggest to you that these gigs will be exceptionally cool. The ensemble brings together some of the the local scene's crème de la crème of international jazz aficionados. Totally encourage you to get down to one of these gigs.

It might be hard though because there is an array of other smokin' gigs on. Not the least of which will be the outrageously extolled original tunes of Splitter at Sharkys on Saturday night. The gig will also include support from Sangvar Day. Also Krom's Night of the Noir will be played at the Doors as will the internationally accomplished Brett Creswell be playing at the Village. As you can see - a totally and wonderfully eclectic music scene on offer.

For a weekend totally and outrageously full of cool music gigs I just have to mention the very special party that will happen at the Memphis Pub on Saturday night. The Memphis Pub is the country's longest runningand most-consistent dedicated live music venue. The house band - Rock Xpress, fronted by one of the country's premier rock guitarist, Thiem Bona - has been making the Phnom Penh airwaves vibrate in a totally and authentically Khmer rock & roll vibe for more than 14 years!! First starting off as the Blues Rock Cafe in front of what is now the Himawari, the band and venue then moved across town to the legendary Why Not Bar. I say legendary because anyone that was lucky enough to witness the open-jam nights on a Friday night back in 2000 / 2001 would have seen the people spilling onto Street 63 every week. It was standing room only..... and with only enough standing room to get your beer to your lips. A totally great set of memories there! After the successes of these gigs the band opened their own venue at what is now known as the Memphis Pub. There is live music every night from Mondays until Saturdays.

It will be a very special celebration this week as the band launches a new album. It is an celebratory album in the fact that is truly a contemporary Cambodian tribute to the 60s Khmer Rock. This is a live album and features some great musicianship. It has on it some great fretboard runs from Thiem Bona together with some smokin' solos from Bun Sambath on keys and Sokha the Outrageosly Smokon' Sax Player on Sax. Sokha also gives a couple of great performances on vocals on the tracks Cyclo and Neary Sexy. The last two tracks also feature keyboard player Yang Pov who also does a great job on the vocals. The line-up is rounded of with the steady beat of Kim Tep on drums and the amazingly talented bass of Danny Lumen. Also listen for the uniquely female flavour of Ya on vocals - great stuff. This album will be totally worth getting and will be available at the launch party this Saturday the 20th of April. You can get a 'taste' of some of the songs that will be available on the album here:

If you are lucky enough to be in Kampot this weekend then there are two totally happening gigs on. The first is Durian Funk Band's first foray outside of the capital. It will happen on Friday night at the Bodhi Villa. On Saturday night the Kampot Playboys are giving Justin huge 'byr-bye' party as he travel off to fairer lands. The band will play the Naga House starting at 9:00PM. Should be a totally great weekend on the south-east coast.

In Siem Reap the rock-blues of Rhythm Conspiracy will be available at Molly Malones on both Saturday and Sunday nights. The bands features local musical legend - Tommy Nick. Cool!

Last but in no way the least is an especially unique performance of live art happening at the Java Cafe next Wednesday. The gig is billed as a performed poetry in soundscape that will be written, arranged, performed, improvised, captured and set free by some of the local scenes most prominent live and electronic musicians and artists. Sounds very interesting and unique.

Also not to be forgotten is a mention of a great article written by Julien Poulsen and published earlier this week by Leng Pleng. The article is a short chronicle of the life and times of local and international music frontman Ian Rowlett Anderson. The article pays tribute to the man and his passion for the music lifestyle as well as his unique sense of humour. The full article can be read HERE.

I will finish off with a video from international legendary DJ Mimetic who will perform a DJ set together with DJ Andy Freak and somevisual artistry by VJ Emma at MetaHouse this coming Saturday. I totally boon for lovers of this genre. Mimetic is currently working with the legendary group Art Zoyd from France and has been doing so since 2000. Art Zoyd have a very high artistic standing in the avant-garde electronica and progressive rock scene. They have been producing music since 1968 and have been widely influential ever since. Mimetic's music is described as sharp intelligent dancefloor electronica with powerful rich kicking beats. Cool!

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 11th of April, 2013

Hey,

I guess it's that time to welcome people into year 2556 and wish everyone a happy new year. This weekend being a 5-day holiday marks the beginning of the more tempered local music scene where the 32-gigs a weekend tends to settle down to the high-teens and early twenties. Considering it is a long-long break though, this weekend is looking pretty cool music-wise.

A great night will be had tonight when The Klezbodians extol the tremendous vitues of Klezmer music. I caught these guys playing out on the street in front of the Opera Cafe a few weeks back and recorded them here. The band creates a great atmosphere and has cool, happening and steady back-beat (made up of ex-Grass Snake Union members) and an outrageously smokin' front-end. The front-end features the totally amazing clarinet of Cambodian Bun Hong (Cambodian Space Project and Phnom Penh Hippie Orchestra) and the impassioned movement and melodies from the mandolin of Sam Day Harmet. They are totally great out on the street - catch them in a more formal arrangement tonight (Thursday) at The Village.

The same venue will feature a new band on Friday known as Jahzad. The promo goes like this: "Mixing the danceable rhythms of Jamaican Ska with popular jazz, Jahzad brings together some of the city's best musicians. Jazhad wants to get you up and moving to their infectious beats and tasty horn lines. Featuring sax, trombone, mandolin, double bass and drums, Jazhad plays in the tradition of the Skatalites and Jamaica's Studio 1 Band that laid the foundations for modern reggae." Don't know about the "...tasty horn lines..." but the rest sounds very cool to me.

The normally sporty bar known as The Score again is treating patrons to some live music for Khmer New Year as several venues latch onto the new years theme for an excuse to have a party. Also MetaHouse continues this weekend with a trio of underground music gigs over the weekend. Cool! In Kampot the Kampot Playboys will be out playing two gigs over the weekend. The first gig is at the Bodhi Villa on Saturday night - bound to be a totally happening gig - and the second is at the Naga House when the band will play together with Rendezvous. Cool!

Back in Phnom Penh, Sharkys continues the live music for those patrons still in the capital with two bands who are well known for tramping the Sharky stage - the Lazy Drunks on Friday and Sugar Daddy on Saturday night. Also Smokin' Kenny Smith hosts the venue's regular live music jam on Sunday - definitely one of the best in town, so get down there.

Heaps more coming up. To take you out this week I include the latest offering from the mixing board of Equinox's Anthony Mrugacz. It is a track recorded last week from Na Zdrovia.

Also, Julien Poulsen from the Cambodian Space Project was recently interviewed on the John McNair Show and talked about the current state of the band, gave his perspective on the current status of the local music and arts scene in Cambodia and also talks about a story recently unearthed by Marc Eberle in relation to the final days of Pan Ron (Leng Pleng hopes to publish more information about this story in the coming weeks). The interviewer has a rather droll approach to the interview at times but manages to cover a good array of information.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 4th of April, 2013

Hey,

This week typing from Australia where the Cambodian Space Project have just completed a groovy and rocking couple gigs in Perth for the 15th edition of the Fremantle Street Arts Festival. Great privilege to be here and witness an amazing variety of street music and theatre. Totally cool!

Earlier this week Leng Pleng released a special article written by DJ Sequence to the gig guide mailing list entitled The Underground Club Scene in Phnom Penh. The article goes someway in divulging what is happening in the growing electronic music scene in the Cambodian capital. In the article DJ Sequence interviews who he believes to be some of the more prominent electronic musicians including Professor Kinski, DJs Flo, DJ Wez_T, DJs from the Kimchi Collective, DJ MoodyDann, Dr Wah Wah, and DJs from Invisible Agent as well as music manager from the MetaHouse venue Johannes Kast. These artists are in the midst creating a more unique and underground electronic music scene - away from the more commercial arena. The piece includes a number of videos that will help the less knowledgeable get a greater grasp of what the author is trying to portray.  If you missed it the first time then the the full article can be viewed here: http://www.lengpleng.com/p/the-underground-club-scene-in-phnom-penh.html

This week in the gig guide sees a trio of gigs featuring Lewis Pragasm at The Village. The performer will be presenting a fusion of Western and Asian beats. It is a little hard to make out whether this new venue wants to be a restaurant of a music venue at this point but I am guessing things will evolve as the place matures. Certainly they are attempting to offer a range of musical styles and performances seldom seen in Cambodia which is a boon for us in the audience.

Amanda Bloom takes her wonderful and powerful performance just north of Wat Phnom to a debut at The Doors on Thursday. It will again be accompanied by a bassoon and cello and will also feature some new songs. Totally worth getting to and I would suggest this will be a great venue for this performer. Get down there!

Equinox have two great bands on again this week. On Friday the debut of a Russian Ska band will tromp the stage. This could be the beginning of a whole new thing for the traps around the country so get down there and check them out. The band is Na Zrovia and they will be on stage and streaming live across the Internet at around 9:00PM. On Saturday the venue hosts the re-emergence of Holliday in Cambodia who apparently played their last gig in September last year ;o) - great to have them back.

A further debut will occur at the FCC Phnom Penh rooftop on Saturday night when the Siemreapers play their blend of  jazz rock with pop and funk. They will feature a horn section with trombone and sax and are an eclectic mix of nationalities. Defintely one to look for.

Sharkys also pile on a great local rock & roll selection this weekend with the original tunes from Jaworski7 on Friday and a couple of classic blues-rock-country sets from the totally professional Sugar Daddy on Saturday night. Earlier in the year at this same venue, rock & roll aficionados were lucky enough to be visited by Niki Buzz who graced the Sharky stage with some full-on rock the way it is supposed to be played by the legends of the game. This same performer has written and released a song that is all about is long-time friend - Big Mike from Sharkys. You can download and listen to the song HERE.

Another gig to look for is earlier on Friday evening when Kheltica will play at Le Jardin. Cool! Lots coming up too - including the opening of yet another live music and DJ dedicated venue.

Krom have recently released their new album (available for download at http://cdbaby.com/cd/krom12) and a new video. One song on the album features Sopheak Chamroeun on the lead vocals and is called The Wire.

Also see below a recent video release by Splitter. Cool!

Anyone who missed the legendary gigs performed by Dr Eggs last week can see this video that was captured at the X-Bar on Monday.

Also a series of tracks are currently being made available by Professor Kinski. The tracks are an eclectic electronic mix of the Dub Addiction ragga-dub beats and feature a range of electronic and live musicians from France, Germany and Switzerland. Cool!
