The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 27th of June, 2013

Hey,

Huge amounts of stuff happening again this week. What a totally cool scene!

This weekend features one of Phnom Penh favourite sons finally returning to Phnom Penh with his band after nearly 6 years. I refer to to totally cool and totally talented Davis Zunk who will play together with his band The Wunderlusters at Equinox on Friday and The Village on Saturday night. Davis was a romantic and funkadelic pioneer of the local music scene mack in the middle of the first decade  with bands such as his Happy Lucky Love You Long Time funk band, the Mekong Messengers (the precursor to the renowned Hellhounds) and the Taxi Guys. The band is only in town for these two nights before they continue their short tour of SE Asia. Be sure to catch them.

Before that though you can be thoroughly entertained by Srey Chanty from the Cambodian Space Project as she spins out a huge number of hits from her collection of rare vinyls from the 1960 Khmer rock - the golden era of the Khmer local music scene. This happens tonight (Thursday) at MetaHouse. Also on Thursday are the absolutely unbeatable and spectacular views and music from DJ RLand at the Eclipse Skybar which sits atop the Phnom Penh Tower - the high rise on Monivong Blvd. Totally smokin!

Friday just features a totally great array of bands and performers at a variety of venues. No point in me going through them all - just check out the gig guide below.

For those who prefer a relaxed scene, Le Jardin continue their Sunset Sandpit Sessions - this week featuring the wonderful ballads and originals from Scott Bywater and Rob Pickering. Great stress-free environment with a sandpit for the kids, a beer/wine for Mum and Dad and some great music. Also early on Friday you can go to The Willow and also enjoy some scintillating food while you listen to the live music from Conrad Keeley and Chris Davis. To continue with your relaxing evening into the night you can move to The Doors to see and hear Lady & The Tramp or the Opera Cafe who will feature the beautiful vocals of Rhiannon Johnson.

A much more high-energy, dance situation will be at the Slur Bar Friday night as Dub Addiction debut at the venue. Sharkys will have a similar scene as the Adobo Conspiracy hits the stage of the longest running rock n roll bar in SE Asia. Also RNA return to Paddy Rice for what will be a long list of great renditions of a number of classic tunes. Definitely something you can find that you can get into amongst this smokin' collection of happening gigs

On Saturday night at Sharkys Phnom Penh heavey rock aficionados can revel in the countries loudest rock band. Straight from Siem Reap, this will be the X-Rays debut performance in the capital. Should be huge. They are supported by Khmer rock band Sangvar Day. Cool! On that same night over at Equinox catch the tunes of Moi Teat. The band features a collection of the live music scene's better known musicians and they perform two sets of original songs. If you are in Sihanoukville this weekend then make sure to catch Up 2 U Mango at the Led Zephyr both Friday and Saturday nights.

Tuesday really highlights the range of choice available in the local scene with Gentle Winds playing at The Village and Ricky Rotten & the Scumbags playing at The Cavern. Take a pick ;o).

Huge amounts of music coming up - including the totally talentless Rania - an all-girl dance-band from South Korea. OK - may be not completely talentless - looking totally sexy - yes, definitely 10 out of 10 for that one (check-out the flyer!) - and also some amazingly sumptuous and enticing dance moves - I'll give them that too. They will be performing at the Bayon Studio on the Russian Blvd. near Monivong on the 11th of July.

A quick note just to say you can check out Toma Willen's (GTS Jazz, Dub Addiction, Jahzad) new blog at http://www.toma-willen.com/dotclear/ . Before I go one more video from up around Siem Reap way using the latest in drone-video techjnology. Cool!

From Ted, Rob and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 20th of June, 2013

Hey,

Music is a unique thing. It is so fundamental, so primitive, and so significant. It is something that is able to reach inside us and talk directly to our hearts and bring out our most meaningful and elemental emotions. It helps us to cry, helps us remember, helps us to dance, helps us to smile and laugh and helps us to love. Music helps us exist. Music let's us express who we are. Music says things that words cannot say by themselves. Music exists within us, it exists all around us and it joins us together and can give us a place to belong. Music is all these things, and every year on the 21st of June 2012 music is celebrated all over the world with the Fête de la Musique.

The Fête de la Musique started in France in 1982. You can see a version of how it started on Wikipedia. There are some fundamental precepts to the Fête de la Musique that helps it to be what it is - or what it is supposed to be at least. One of the most important aspects of the festival is that it is recognized as being non-commercial. The festival aims to celebrate the fact that money came after music and therefore music does not need money to exist. Hence, musicians play for free. It is also supposed to be about musicians playing outside their usual places of performance - out on the street, in railways stations, bus stations, by the riverside - public places where music can be easily heard and shared by all those walking by. Musicians can also be seen to play in hospitals, prisons, orphanages and the likes. Keep your eyes and ears open whilst walking down the street this Friday.

There are several venues hosting Fête de la Musique gigs this year - including the newly opened Slur Bar, the Memphis Pub, Le Bar, Paddy Rice  and various places along the lane area of Siem Reap. Hopefully these venues are not looking at cashing-in on the festival but are offering a good range of drink specials in order to make it a special day - a day out of the ordinary. If you don't see that then I totally encourage you to go to the bar and demand your Fête de la Musique free beer, wine, spirit, soft drink or whatever else takes your fancy. In addition to these venues look for several special performances by Mississippi Skip George who will play at four venues - Romdeng, Trunkh, Java Cafe and finishing off at the Memphis Pub. He is doing this for the festival and, if you are lucky, you might see him with his guitar playing in a Tuk-Tuk between venues.

Before that, however, there are 5 auspicious gigs happening tonight (Thursday), not the least of which is the Cambodian Space Project playing at Gasolina in support of IFEX (International Freedom of Exchange - a global network aimed at defending and promoting freedom of expression)  and the CCHR (Cambodian Center for Human Rights). Also catch Ai Iwasaki (a classically trained vocalist performing Mezzo-soprano) and Claudio Canfora on piano at the Opera Cafe.

Mainly (but not entirely) due to this festival, Friday's gig guide has a total of 22 gigs and 42 performers - in the words of Television Ted - "Wow!" Things just keep getting stronger every week. It is The Klezbodians that are playing at Le Bar and it will be one of the last times you will be able to catch the band before some of the members head to gigs further afield. The band also plays at the Opera cafe on Saturday.

Saturday has a total of 10 gigs on offer - some being the best and coolest bands in the local scene. At Equinox you can get the totally great reggae-ragga beats of Dub Addiction - great venue to see this band. At the FCC Phnom Penh see the Khmer psychedelic rock of the Cambodian Space Project - also an awesome venue for this band and at MetaHouse dance to the spun tunes from the Kimchi Collective.

This same night at Sharkys, Ricky Rotten and the Scumbags cover the entire Sex Pistols album Never Mind the Bollocks plus songs off The Great Rock N Roll Swindle. According to Dave The Punk (manager of Sharkys) Ricky Rotten would currently be, without doubt, the best punk rock singer in the country. He is Phnom Penh's answer to Johnny - and with a name like that why wouldn't he be!?

Also look for some totally great music emanating from The Groove this weekend. Both Friday and Saturday sees some totally great vibes happening from this very, very smooth and cool venue. Well worth getting to see Rhiannon Johnson on Friday evening and Diego Demarques on Saturday evening.

Sunday sees the opening of yet another music venue. This one comes with a special bit of uniqueness in that it is located directly on the Tonle Sap river. It is not on the Phnom Penh side though but  on the Chroy Changvar peninsular. After crossing the Chroy Changvar (Japanese) Bridge take your immediate left (watch out for all the bridge construction stuff happening). Next drive down to the river and take a right and follow the river north for 5 minutes. At 4:00PM Up 2 U Mango will be playing there and so it should make a relatively fun, cool, relaxing and happening Sunday afternoon. Cool!

Later on in the week you will be able to catch a couple of gigs at The Village plus a very special and rare re-appearance of Espresso Thmey at Equinox. Also at the Show Box you can catch a new ensemble known as Rockabilly Box Romp featuring Conrad Keely and members of the Grass Snake Union. It starts early at around 7:30PM and includes rockabilly, BBQ and beers. Sounds totally cool!

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 13th of June, 2013

Hey,

The weekend for the local music scene is definitely a 3 day thing now with Thursdays consistently offering up a great swathe of quality gigs from week to week. This Thursday continues  the trend with an amazing array of gigs.

Big news is the official opening party tonight (Thursday) of the capitals newest dedicated live music venue. To be known as the Slur Bar, it is located on Street 172, in-between Pasteur (Street 51) and Norodom - close to Pontoon and the Heart of Darkness. Not only will there be a new vibe there but also a new band in the form of the roots-reggae beats of VibraTone. This new band will be in support to the Cambodia-Western fusion of Kok Thlok. Should be a totally great party. Tomorrow night at the same venue you can catch another of the scene's newest ensembles - Moi Teat - whose line-up sports a number of known members of various other local ensembles. Cool!

Just down the road and around the corner from there also on Thursday at the Latin Quarter . Again, a new band will play and they will extol the tropical, Caribbean beats of Ska. They are a band called Jahzad and they will feature the totally cool walking bass-lines of Sebastian Adnot.

Also on Thursday at MetaHouse, your chance to hear the "tasteful style and fresh sounds" of Tim King as he plays his guitar along with DJ Nico. Tim is well known as a DJ aboard the most famous of local radio station 97.5 LoveFM.  Cool!

Sharkys host The Underdogs this Friday. This is great band of young and totally professional, talented Cambodian artists. They formed in August last year after meeting each other at the Music Arts School (more about the great things coming out from this school HERE). They play a range of genres including songs from the golden era of Khmer rock, classic and contemporary Western rock and a number of originals. The same venue will host Jaworski7 on Saturday. Cool! Friday also sees the return of RNA to Paddy Rice on the riverfront as well as the wonderful duet of Lady & the Tramp at the Opera Cafe.

On Saturday you can catch the return of the Cambodian Space Project and welcome their totally grunge filled rock-psychedelia and unique Western-Khmer ballads back to their home turf. The band has been in Australia doing some recording and some touring, after which they went to Europe for a number of huge gigs before returning to the land of wrong-way drivers via on the famous Esplanade in Singapore. They will play at Equinox on Saturday and possibly another secret location on Friday - which I am not allowed to tell you about - you will just have to look around. Should be huge. The band will be in town for about 3 weeks before they take-off for a number of gigs in the U.S.

A more laid-back and subdued night can be heard on Saturday with the smooth, dulcet tones of Sebastian Adnot and Sylvie Izzo at the Opera Cafe or possibly the clssically beautiful vocals of sisters Sopea  and Sopheak Chomroeun at MetaHouse.  Cool! The Village rounds off the musical week with a couple of unique gigs on Tuesday, Gentle Winds, and Wednesday, the Briana Cowlishaw Quartet and the Gavin Ahearn Trio.

Huge amounts of music coming up too. Look for the Fête de la Musique next week when a number of huge gigs will appear - not the least of which will be the appearance by Mississippi Skip George at a qunitet of venues and finishing up at the famous celebrations of this annual event (with no less than 10 bands) at the Memphis Pub. Totally smokin' scene, totally cool place to be and and enjoy live music.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 6th of June, 2013

Hey,

A host of international performers playing around the traps this weekend. Pontoon will host a fourth date for Dengue Fever this Saturday night. Imojah continues to wow the local audience as the totally sultry and sexy Reggae songstress from Martinique teams up with the guys from Dub Addiction at the Show Box on Friday night. Additionally, the RiverHouse Lounge continues their special series of international DJs with DJ Fred Jungo late into Friday night on the riverside. All totally cool gigs!

Friday night sees Le Jardin hosting a very special Friday night show known as the Sunset Sandpit Sessions. The first iteration of the event features a string of performers, including Scott 'Scoddy' Bywater, Jenna Holliday and the last chance to catch Kevin ’Pinky’ Drew perform a set of his highly original and infectious songs. Cool! With the music starting around 6:00PM the event is geared to thos of you who are LOOKING FOR A FRIDAY AFTER WORK BEER WITH MUSIC! Outrageously cool! If you have not been to Le Jardin before then the place boasts a spacious beer garden and large comfy chairs together with a play area for the kids. Should be a great time - as long as the rain stays away.

Later the same day The Fumes return to Sharkys as does the smokey vocals of Sonhador returns to The Village. MetaHouse will be hosting a very cool Vintage Funk & Soul Vinyl night and The Klezobodians move to Paddy Rice for the weekend. The latter should be a totally great venue for the band - even though the acoustics can be a little tricky at times - definitely another recommended gig for this night.

Saturday night is definitely punk night this week with Sharkys hosting the third iteration of the venue's Punk & Disorderly show. This time it will be headlined by the new Psychotic Reactions as well as Sanvar Day, Jaworski 7 and a host of other great Punk and Indie rock bands. Definitely a must for aficionados of this genre. Additionally, the totally professional and totally original tunes of Splitter will be extolled through the airwaves surrounding the Show Box the same night.

If Punk is not your thing then the great Celtic roots music of Kheltica will be available at the Opera Cafe that same night. These guys are just totally great with a great mix and great atmosphere. It will be an unplugged gig and the specially formed 9-piece band for the night will be printing off lyric sheets so that everyone can sing along, stomp their feet, bang on a table and generally get involved - in true traditional Celtic fashion. Cool! Still more is available that same night as RingTail host a regular Saturday night Open Mic at the Boomerang Bar & Restaurant.

Finally, next Wednesday at the Memphis Pub, a very special day of celebration for all Filipinos as Jaworski 7, Adobo Conspiracy, Michael Coronel and the  Philippine Embassy Choral put on a great night of music. Should be a great night of toally great music.

In case you haven't heard the big news - consummate musicians Ritchy & Phil have just opened their new bar atop the Terrazza Italian Restaurant on Street 282 in Boeng Keng Kang 1 in Phnom Penh. The name of the bar is known as The Groove and you can get more information about the place HERE. There will be regular live music from there and I feel sure it will be a regular hangout for all those who missed the great vibes that used to be available at Studio 182. Cool!

The great musical support services emanating from one of the Kingdom's most forward thinking and well setup venues continues to be rolled out this week with Equinox's 24-hour a day musical stream. You can hook into all the totally classic gigs that have tramped the Equinox stage - and, believe me, there have been many. You can enjoy the sounds (all recorded live!) that stream from the service any time. Click on the image below to tune into to current tracks. Totally cool!

I will leave you this week with an absolutely great local production. This original song and video is another indefectible example of the totally vibrant, unique and creative local music scene. This is a collaboration between the fervent and dynamic musical mind of Professor Kinski and the totally beautiful, passionate and sultry vocals and keys of Amanda Bloom. Check it out!

From Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
