The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 25th of July, 2013

Hey,

Election weekend is coming so, as expected, a much more tempered gig-guide this musical weekend.

The election has mainly impacted on Saturday, which is hosting only one gig. The Village will purport to be a restaurant and, as such, will claim not to rely on the sale of alcoholic beverages during their election-weekend negotiations. Consequently this venue is hosting the subtle saxophone infused flavours of Brentwood. MetaHouse were formerly hosting Swagger with Invisible Agent on this night but this has now had to be postponed to a later date. Keep tuned for info on that in later editions.

Friday is also a little lower than normal but there is still some totally cool music action coming our way. This will include the sophisticated Coffee-Rock emanating from the bluesy, acoustic fretboard of Brentrix / Brentus JP at this week's Sunset Sandpit Session at Le Jardin. Brent will be joined by fellow acoustic singer-songwriter Rob Pickering and also John M who will sings a great set of classic covers from the Neil Young / Bob Dylan era. Should be a totally cool session.

Two sets of totally 100% original material will be played when Moi Teat hit the stage at the Slur Bar later the same night. This band features some great harmonies from two of the local expat scene's best vocalists - Jenna Holliday and Scott Bywater. The band will also be joined by the returning Greg Lavender and that bigger-than-big-hearted bass-man Andre Swartz.  Also Friday, Adobo Conspiracy play Sharkys and Holliday in Cambodia will be playing a couple of sets of classic covers at Paddy Rice. Cool!

Before that, however and happening tonight (Thursday), Dub Addiction return to the capital's most professionally equipped venue - Equinox. The band has been joined by KlapYaHadz' vocalist / dub-artist Lisha which will definitely increase the vibe and buzz to unprecedented levels of this, the most coolest of reggae-ragga dub bands in the country. Slur Bar also host a new band called Rock and The Village host the wonderful Joe Wrigley.

Another great venue you must keep in mind is the totally  happening Showbox. The venue is totally moving most nights nowadays with something happening every day (check it out here). The venue will host Splitter this coming Tuesday. Also look for a couple of worthwhile gigs at The Doors and MetaHouse next Wednesday evening.

Breaking news in that the 2013 edition of Penhstock at Sharkys is pencilled in for early November - probably over 4 days of the long weekend from the 8th to the 11th. Cool! For those who have not attended this marathon feast of the local and international rock scene then I totally urge you to get there. They are one of the best and longest-running rock & roll bars in the region and have a great menu, lots of pool tables and an unrivalled rock & roll atmosphere. The following video will hook you into the vibe of Penhstock with a couple of tunes from Oscar's Band. Not the best sound quality - but you will get the idea.

On the other side of town, there are three new imminent album releases from players of the local scene. Krom will be releasing a new 14-track set very soon with a couple of tracks featuring Master Kong Nay. This will be a more upbeat album than the last with a more country feel. The album should be an amazing collaboration with a fusion of fundamental art-form genres that put the traditional 2-stringed Cambodian guitar (or chapei) of Master Kong Nay, the sweet and vulnerable contemporary vocals of Sophea Chamroeun, the Mississippi-Delta finger-picking of Christopher Minko and the haunting, considered slide guitar of Jimmy Baeck. One to look forward to no doubt.

The Cambodian Space Project will be returning from Detroit in the next couple of weeks where they have been recording and album with the legendary Motown music producer Dennis Coffey. They visited the now officially bankrupt U.S. city of Detroit. Detroit is most famous musically as the place where Motown Records was born (and much more). We are hoping to publish more info from the CSP's Detroit adventures and the possible album release date in the coming weeks.

Also, in Bangkok, the heartfelt, melancholy and exquisitely beautiful lyrics and vocals of Amanda Bloom have been compiled, digitally recorded and will be released on a forthcoming album this year. I will leave you this week with a taste of what Amanda may have to offer.

From Ted, Rob and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.

Gig Guide - Weeks Starting Thursday the 18th of July, 2013

Hey,

Another totally cool and vibrant musical weekend rolls around. With the national elections on next weekend, it might be a good idea to get out and enjoy the vibe over the next few days because there might be a damper put on next weekends musical smorgasbord with a ban on alcoholic substances to come into affect next Saturday.

The wonderful, mellifluous vocals of Joe Wrigley will take you on a musical adventure for the start of the week. He plays at The Village this evening (Thursday) and also at the Alley Cat Café on Saturday. Both are early start gigs. The local music soon will bid a fare-ye-well party to the young, beautiful and totally talented Linette Chhun Charm this evening at Equinox. A special gig indded and well worth getting to. At MetaHouse a relatively new and unique event will take place when a diverse array of well known players from various parts of the local music scene collaborate to form an Electric Universe. MetaHouse is all about something new, something creative and sometimes something so intuitively cool that it can take you to illusory places that you never realized you yearned so much. All happening tonight (Thursday).

The Sunset Sandpit Sessions are on again this Friday at Le Jardin. It is customarily created for those who like their after-the-working-week beer seasoned with a great sprinkling of quality acoustic music surrounded by trees, good food and a great atmosphere. This week the session features an ensemble from the well-known Celtic roots band Kheltica - appropriately renamed to Mini-Khetica for this special gig. The session will also feature music producer, guitarist, composer and sound-scape artist Hal FX. He is purportedly talented enough to make other musicians weep. Whoa - big call - so check it out! The Lazy Drunks at Paddy Rice, The Underdogs at Sharkys and a number of cool DJ sessions at various venues round-off Friday's music scene.

On Sunday at 3:00PM, a new gig at the Quay Hotel on the Phnom Penh river-front has started up with the exquisitely talented duo of Euan Grey and Gabi Faja presenting a series of jazz tunes to get your laid-back Sunday juices in the places where you want them to be. The Jazz Juice sessions started last week and is definitely worth checking out. Later on the same day another poetry sound-scape will be assumed, brewed, actualized, hominified, phenom-ed, dispersed, dismantled and then bequeathed at the aforementioned MetaHouse - house of coolness. Also on Sunday, and put together in celebration of the Belgian national day, will be the Latin classics portrayed acoustically by Diego Demarques and Alan Breen. They will play at the Belgian-owned Open Wine on Street 19 (one of Phnom Penh's best kept secrets) - with a wonderful array of delicious foods not found anywhere else in the Kingdom.

A great smattering of quality DJ gigs throughput the weekend too - so get out and get into it.

Coming up, the fourth iteration of the annual indoor musical feast which is affectionately known as PenhStock will commence at Sharkys. No details forthcoming as yet but the 3 to 5 day musical event generally features a huge chunk of the local rock & roll scene together with one or two international acts sometimes thrown into the mix. A run down of previous instantiations of the event can be hooked into here.

I will will you with a couple of videos I came across on the web recently from Khmerican Huy Bochan - the first is quite a classic. The summary for the first video goes like this "Audio track of a young Bochan (1996) rehearsing a new remix of the traditional Khmer Trot. Keys and arrangement by Prince Norodom Sirivudh. Her late father, Chhan Huy on guitar.". Super- cool. I follow it up with a more recent release from the artists in 2013. Enjoy.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 11th of July, 2013

Hey,

It's that time of the week again and the coming weekend's gig guide is full with a great spread of quality gigs.

Equinox has a great weekend of live music lined up with emerging Khmer Rock band The Underdogs playing there on Friday and a classic double bill on Saturday with The Klezbodians and Jahzad. This will be the last local performance of the Sam Day Harmett before he returns to the place of his birth, New York City, to embed himself there in the local music scene.

Sharkys presents two nights of solid rock music this weekend. The Saturday night gig is relatively special with the Las Vegas Knockouts hitting the stage. They are a rockabilly-punk band that hails from Las Vegas via Bangkok and they hit town last week. On Friday the venue hosts Holliday in Cambodia.

The Groove presents a series of polished and sophisticated performances over three nights starting tonight (Thursday), culminating in the celebration of the French national day on Saturday night. This collection of gigs will feature a number of totally exceptional local musicians including the likes of Euan Grey, Barry Spiers and Diego Dimarques. A cosy and cool venue atop the Terrazza Italian Restaurant.

The Slur Bar brings you four nights of excellent music. It starts Thursday with the wonderfully extolled saxophonic melodies of Stephane Routier and GTS Jazz followed by Friday's Latin party with the Diego Latin Trio, then the more contemporary classic rock of the Lazy Drunks and finally Sunday's full-on rock with the Khmer band Oscar.

Le Jardin will again present the Sunset Sandpit Sessions early on Friday. This week the beer garden will feature three performers - Sonny Krishnan and Pervaz Gulzar from RNA and Alex Ung. Like some kind of musical superhero, Alex appears at a venue in the middle of the night, dazzles everyone with his powers, then disappears again. The audience is left wondering, "Who is this young man with the exquisite voice and smooth John Mayer/John Legend repertoire?" Find out for yourself on Friday. Also earlier on Friday, welcome the return of the ARTillary Cafe back to the live music scene with Scott Bywater and Andre Swart.

Metahouse will also entertain you with the utmost of underground coolness in the heart of Phnom Penh's hustled back-streets. The back-beats of the international Reggae-Dub DJ Samurai will be available on Saturday. He describes himself as a new kind of artist - a DJ, rapper, poet, novelist and dramatist all in one. A unique experience guaranteed. On the south coast, the same night, the Naga House also presents an intercontinental DJ in the form of DJ Bello - deep house is what you will find spinning into the late late hours.

The Doors features one of the last performances of Lady & The Tramp on Friday night. On Saturday night the venue will have Krom perform some of the songs from their forthcoming release entitled Neon Dark. This album will feature some songs together with Master Kong Nay

The FCC Phnom Penh also chimes in this week with the totally danceable and totally great performing Latino band Luna Negra. Great night of music on the FCC rooftop for those who like to dance.

Leaving you this week with a couple of things from the sometimes local Gone Marshall - a totally talented poet and music producer. We featured his humurous take on the local scene a couple of years ago with the song Barangutang. Below is a couple more offerings from the performer. A whol list can be enjoyed here: https://soundcloud.com/gone-marshall.

Gig Guide - Week Starting Thursday the 4th of July, 2013

Hey,

A totally great load of quality music heading our way this weekend - including the renowned Punk-Rockabilly outfit called The Knockouts

This week we are pleased to released the first in a series of articles written by the great man of the local Blues-Rock / Americana scene - Mr. Smokin' Kenny Smith. Ken has been seen around the traps in Cambodia for many years now. You may have seen him in a number of different venues - from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh and on to Siem Reap. He is a totally great musician who lives his music and is able to completely hold and captivate an audience all the way through a 12+ minute guitar solo. He takes you through the ups and the downs, through the highs and the lows, and through the sweet and the sour of life while he plays. Ken holds the rare ability of never losing his way through his guitar breaks - from the sweet guitar licks to the totally pumping blues-rock rhythms.

Ken is a great guitar man, that is well known, but what is less known is his ability with the pen. Today we release the first article entitled The Musicians Guide to Riding the Cambodian Roller Coaster, or How to Musically Prostitute Yourself for Fun and Adventure! Check it out below:

The Musicians Guide to Riding the Cambodian Roller Coaster, or How to Musically Prostitute Yourself for Fun and Adventure!

By Smoking Kenny Smith
You have to have a good day in order to appreciate the bad days. I tell myself this when I feel secure in the knowledge that my room is paid up for at least the next 6 days and I have a gig on Friday - which means money coming in later on Friday night. I run through my pockets of last night’s pants, looking in my wallet with hopeful intent and I manage to assemble a total of just under $4.30 in Cambodian Riel.

Wait though! This is Wednesday morning and I don’t consider food an extravagance - so I better make a plan quick. Three words that I dislike are mathematics, budget and reality. I could add rice and eggs to that list because the next question I ask myself is how much rice and eggs can I stand for the next three days? Sure I could call a friend and ask for a small loan, but I’ll take the wait and see what approaches.
How about one of these weeks; fleeting thoughts of suicide on Monday, warming up to an extreme state of depression by the end of the week. Then by a miraculous twist of fate............ [CLICK HERE to read the entire article]

Kenny and Shaun Miller kick off the weekend this week with a gig opening a new venue in Kampot. The gig happens tonight (Thursday) at a place called the Señor Sushi in Kampot. This will be curious mix of Mexican and Japanese cuisine together with Americana blues. Cool! The gig starts early. Continuing on the Americana theme Scott Bywater will hit out a couple of totally great sets at the Alley Cat Cafe tonight (Thursday) - all for the July 4th celebrations for the independence of the United States. I feel sure that Up 2 U Mango will also be extolling the tremendous virtues of the U.S. musical culture at the Slur Bar on this same night. Also, look and listen for the totally beautiful vocals and acoustic ballads of Joe Wrigley at The Village.

Friday sees Khmer rock band Animation play MetaHouse at 8:00PM followed by DJane Sopheak Sao. One of the local scene's best and coolest venues. Get down there. Before that Le Jardin has a collection of 4 solo artists who will play for their regular Sunset Sandpit Sessions. A great place for an after work beer. The session starts at 6:00PM. This same night the newest reggae band in town - Jahzad - plays at the Slur Bar. Cool!

There are two musicians who are set to leave town soon. As such you will need to take advantage of the last few gigs they will perform over the next couple of weekends. They are the lovely Linette Chhun Charm from Lady and the Tramp (Friday at The Doors) and Sam "the Mandolin Man" Day Harmet from Up 2 U Mango (Thursday at the Slur Bar), Jahzad (Friday at the Slur Bar) and The Klezbodians (Saturday at MetaHouse). Sam will be playing is very last gig next week at the ShowBox next weekend. Check out this great video of Imojah last gig there a few weeks back.

Cool!

Also on Saturday night AntiFate and A.O.A. play the ShowBox and Bob Passion returns to the capital with At Panha at Slur Bar. Also Jaworski 7 play Sharkys and over at the Memphis Pub they will be celebrating a huge 9 years in operation with resident band Rock Xpress and guests Vibratone.

Heaps coming up so make sure to stay tuned to Leng Pleng to get all the latest from the local live music and DJ scene.

From Rob, Ted and I here in the back streets of Phnom Penh, have a great weekend, be cool with each other and see you around the traps. Here's this week's gig guide.
