The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Gig Guide: Commencing Thursday 31st October 2013

In the land of my birth, folks are turning back the clocks and switching on the winter heating. Meanwhile, in South America they are preparing candles and flowers for the Day of the Dead. Here in Phnom Penh this week, lots of people are getting dressed up and going to parties for something called ‘Halloween’ (not sure what that is about). At Leng Pleng Towers, however, the first weekend of November means only one thing... HIGH SEASON has arrived!

Cue fanfares, bright lights and dancing girls. We’ve waited a while, but this week the Cambodian music scene is kicking up a gear. Now every single day brings a great gig opportunity, just take a look at the listings below. With new venues opening up, and increased dates at existing venues, Jack Diamond will have a hard time staying ahead of the curve.

The ‘soft’ opening of new venue Cabaret Restaurant slipped by me last week. Located on Street 154 near Central Market, this leafy lounge promises live music every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Tonight you can catch some funky 1960’s style jazz with Marsyas.

Yes, this week’s roster of gigs really has it all. New bands in magical new venues, old hands in famous haunts, a dozen buskers bubbling in a melting pot and... a tedious wash of spooky puns and hastily thrown-together Halloween-themed evenings.

Jack doesn’t really go in for this Halloween nonsense but I am pleased that someone woke the sleeping beast that is Psychotic Reactions. If you have not yet witnessed the sight of an English biker-punk in a corset, singing hardcore music with a band of musical heavyweights, you have two chances to see Psychotic Reactions this week. Thursday at the Memphis Pub Halloween Party and Monday at Equinox. These guys are great and they know their stuff.

One chance, and the last chance, to see Scott Bywater’s Moi Tiet! on Friday at Doors Phnom Penh. The well renowned and well loved Phnom Penh songwriter will be leaving The Kingdom soon, and this will be the last performance of his band, proudly playing an all-originals set.

With admirable drive and work ethic, ‘Scoddy’ has achieved something quite unique in the live music landscape here. Where others rehashed the same old covers, the prolific songsmith and tireless performer chose to stick to his own material. Over a period of time, he installed tunes such as ‘It’s not the Mississippi, It’s The Mekong’ or ‘Flying into Pochentong’ into the collective musical consciousness of Phnom Penh gig-goers. Over hundreds of shows, Bywater achieved that which is normally achieved with large and expensive media campaigns. You can see the result for yourself on Friday, when you are bound to hear the song ‘Phnom Penh Driving School’ being requested a number of times.

As if one really cool original gig in a weekend wasn’t enough, Doors turn to the Klezbodians on Saturday night for some outrageous Klezmer dance music. Bun Hong’s clarinet, Giacomo Butte’s accordion and Jose Encinas’ Spanish guitar combine with Ali Benderdouche’s dumbek and Luis Arambarri’s percussion to weave a flowing tapestry of sound. You really have to hear this rather than read about it, but I can tell you that the musicianship is exemplary and the sound is something well out of the ordinary. I have heard the Klezbodians give amazing shows in venues where the sound system was sadly lacking in quality, therefore I eagerly look forward to hearing them through Roberto’s brand new top-of-the-line PA at Doors.

If you’re in Siem Reap this Saturday don’t miss Cambojam at a special afternoon event in front of the Shinta Mani Hotel. Like fellow fusion luminaries Dub Addiction and Kok Thlok, Cambojam are a very long-running and well established collective of musicians from both inside and outside Cambodia’s borders.

Following the success of Battle of The Bands, Sharky Bar will continue to smash the limitations of presenting a large number of performers in one night with Saturday’s Battle of The Buskers. Sharky’s is possibly the only venue in Phnom Penh that could pull this off – 12 name acts line up to perform short sets and compete for a cash prize. You can see 12 different acts without leaving your bar stool! If there were any cover charge I would say that Battle of The Buskers represented very good value for money.

It’s all just a warm up compared to the blockbusting Penhstock IV: 3 Days of Peace and Music, taking place November 8th-10th. More than 30 bands (yes, 30 bands!) will be in attendance at Sharky Bar to create a legendary weekend of music. Phnom Penh should see an influx of music-lovers on this second weekend of November, as Penhstock IV is complimented and contrasted by the 10th International Music Festival Phnom Penh, taking place at the InterContinental hotel, Meta House and various other venues. Don’t worry, Jack will give you the detailed low-down in next week’s gig guide.

For now Jack has more pressing issues on his mind, like how am I going to find time to see Sliten6ix and Splitter at Slur Bar on Friday night? This gig should be absolutely blasting, as the recent Sharky Bar Battle of The Bands winners Sliten6ix face off with their fellow death-metalheads. Safe to say it will be an outrageous and energetic combination, and the loudest gig yet at Slur Bar.

Are these Phnom Penh venues trying to kill me? Now I hear that Slur Bar are adding regular live music on Monday nights, and Cabaret Restaurant will be hosting a Diego Dimarques residency on Tuesdays. Also, the incredibly talented MWAUKA will be singing at The Village each Wednesday! What a nice problem to have, no days off.

I’ll leave you with a quick glimpse of the audacious Psychotic Reactions at a previous Memphis Pub gig. Also the cautionary words of my landlady, housekeeper, and surrogate mother Mrs Sovann, who is starting to get a bit worried about my full-time carousing... “Take care your health, Bong”.

Weekly Gig Guide - Commencing Thursday 24th October 2013

Which American electric guitar master wrote these words? Stevie Ray Vaughan? Gary Rossington? Steve Vai? None of the above. It is a player from the same generation as those guys, but this particular legend has made Cambodia his home. It is of course Phnom Penh’s Smokin’ Kenny Smith, the incendiary blues riffmaster of ‘Route 66’, ‘Lost Highway’ and many other renowned bands. Not to mention the celebrated Sunday night jam sessions at Sharky’s. Read all about it here in part 2 of Kenny’s uncensored, straight-talkin’ memoir of his experiences as an expat musician: Riding the Rails: The Extreme Ups and Downs of the Cambodian Musical Rollercoaster.

Australian acoustic guitar legend Phil Manning is in Phnom Penh this weekend, playing three gigs at three different venues. The solo folk-blues ace will perform in the intimate surroundings of La Croisette on Thursday and The Gym Sports Bar on Friday, rounding his trip off with a Sunday night show in the more Rock’n’Roll environment of Sharky Bar. Jack is probably dreaming a little bit, but it would be so cool to see a Smokin’ Kenny Smith/Phil Manning duet on Sunday.

Looking over this week’s gig guide, Jack is already restocking his fridge with high-caffeine energy drinks and a large box of Royal D. As you will see, there’s a real avalanche of quality gigs coming up. On Thursday, a new band called Unity debut at The Village. Their repertoire has yet to be revealed, but Unity are a super-trio of acoustic musical magicians, consisting of Ace Zapa, KC G., and Chuck Villar.

Saturday night in Phnom Penh is usually the time when music lovers have to make some tough choices about which band to see. Be ready to make those choices on Friday this week, when there are several hot bands playing at the same time. I guarantee that at 9.30pm you’ll be breaking promises, cancelling dates, and generally spreading yourself thinner than Jack Diamond. If you’re in the mood for venue hopping, you could start things off slowly with Phil Manning at Gym Bar, then catch the experimental sounds of Pan Gu at Metahouse. Crank up the Friday night energy with Jahzad on the dancefloor of Equinox, before a night cap and some late-night funk-jazz action at Slur Bar, with Stephane Routier’s Marsyas. But who would take my advice? You can’t be in two places at once. If you could you might also be able to catch the excellent Vibratone at Doors Phnom Penh, or those solid-as-a-rock indie-pop purveyors The Fumes at The Village. Not to mention... OK, enough already.

Take a deep breath and relax on Saturday with one of many very cool options. Rhiannon Johnson continues her residency at the very classy establishment that is The Groove, on st.282 above Terrazza restaurant. With her golden voice, Rhiannon is the undisputed queen of soul and jazz in Phnom Penh.

www.kenedgar.com

Meanwhile, Sax man Euan Gray and his team of super-hot jazz players light up the dancefloor at Doors Phnom Penh for The Big Swing with Kin.

For more of an international experience, be sure to catch a special acoustic set from Kok Thlok at Slur Bar. The Cambodian-French ensemble recently finished a triumphant run of their play ‘Belle De Nuit’ at Showbox. Saturday will see more innovation and fusion from these fantastic musicians.

All of this should keep Jack busier than Smokin’ Kenny’s left hand during a 12-bar blues solo. If I do manage to survive until next Tuesday, I’ll be at Sundance Inn and Saloon for the open mic, raising a glass to the host - Mr Kenny Smith: lifetime guitar extraordinaire, longtime pillar of the Cambodian expatriate music scene, and sometime memoirist!

As always, take care out there on the scene this week. Special thanks to Ken Edgar, who has provided Leng Pleng with the excellent photographs featured in this week’s wrap. You can see more at www.kenedgar.com

Gig Guide - Week Commencing Thursday 17th October 2013

Is it always like this? Thursday has come once more, and Jack is rubbing his hands with glee at the prospect of spending another week bouncing from concert to gig to party like a hyperactive teenager. I have to confess I haven’t been around here for very long, so perhaps I’m simply getting over-excited (again). It does seem that each new week brings another set of gigs celebrating the culture clash, diversity and creativity of the Cambodian music scene.

Once again, the magicians at Meta House have reached into their bag of tricks and pulled out a fantastic, vital and alternative gig to begin your Thursday night. The extraordinarily talented vocalist Ouch Savy performs accompanied on grand piano by composer Ingolv Haaland. This experimental duo combines the unique, spectral sound of Savy’s traditional Khmer singing with classical and jazz textures provided by the Norwegian Professor of Music.

Another learned gentleman, the eminent dub and fusion scientist Professor Kinski, is back on Cambodian soil this week, and he brings his Dub Addiction collective to Doors Phnom Penh on Friday evening. The band will be in full force with MC Lisha fronting an ensemble of maestros including Chhen Chantrea on Tror, Bun Sambath on keyboards, Seb Adnot on double bass and drummer Toma Willen.

With the Space Project out of town, there is only one contender for the title of best Khmer-Rock revivalist band in Phnom Penh. They are called The Underdogs. It has been fun to watch these teenage music students advance so quickly in stature. From nervous débutantes to assured television stars in just a few months. This Friday, the band will return to Equinox to continue their mission: rocking out the huge and incredible catalogue of songs from the Khmer ‘Golden Age’ of music. The Underdogs will also play a Saturday night show at Slur Bar.

Did you wonder why the gig guide has been a little slim over the last couple of weeks? That was because Scott Bywater was out of the country. Now the hardest working man in the Phnom Penh music business has returned to show us all how it’s done – with seven gigs in seven days! Never a dull moment with this fella, beginning with his Thursday residency at Baitong, continuing with an early spot at Le Jardin on Friday, a set with the Riverside Raybans at The Village on Saturday, another residency at The Alleycat Cafe on Sunday, one day off to rehearse on Monday, before hosting his ‘Baitong Ukulele Circle’ on Tuesday night and ‘Open Stage Poetry’ at Java Cafe on Wednesday. Oh yes and I almost forgot, he is going to be performing at something called ‘Rockabilly Dance Party’ with Joe Wrigley on Friday night at The Village. Phew!

A party atmosphere is expected on Saturday as RNA make their debut at 'Indochina's longest running Rock and Roll Bar', Sharky’s. The band were formed only a few months ago, but have already built a strong following with their eclectic mix of pure gold 1960s and 70s classics.

Feeling a little more hillbilly than hippy? Head to Doors Phnom Penh for Holey Bucket Union. If you missed Grass Snake Union’s tribute to Hank Williams last month, these good ol’ boys are doing it again on Saturday night. Those who saw their gigs at Doors or Equinox were perhaps surprised by just how easy it was to dance to Hank Williams songs. That probably had a lot to do with drumming and percussion maestro Greg Lavender. The Union men also promise a new set of non-Williams material this weekend.

Save some energy and some tuk-tuk money for next week, as the quality music continues through to Wednesday. You can catch pop duo Khmera at Doors Phnom Penh, and on the same night The Village hosts the acoustic Khmer stylings of Miss Sarawan.

Before I get ready to leave the house and start bouncing around some venues, I will impart some videographic evidence of Scott Bywater’s activities in Dalat, Vietnam. Apparently there is a music scene there too!

Also, in case you haven’t already heard the splendid sounds of Chapei player and Khmer folk singer Ouch Savy ahead of her performance at Meta House tonight, here is a great video put together by Cambodian Space Project’s Julien Poulson. The song is called Khmer Harvest Blues.

See you around the traps,

JACK DIAMOND

Gig Guide - Week Commencing Thursday the 10th October 2013

Jazz, Electro and Synth-pop. Serious dedication to Art. Smoking in photographs. This week Jacques salutes the most important and numerous expatriate component of the Cambodian music scene: Les Français.

Fittingly for an act whose latest album is entitled ‘State of War’, Poni Hoax have slipped over the border like a band of French commandos and set up camp in an abandoned warehouse in Beoung Salang. Tonight the group will perform a show for NRG FM at 131B, st.271, Phnom Penh. This tight Parisian outfit bring punchy, groovy, electro-rock and real songs. Eccentric frontman Nicolas Ker evokes the camp outrageousness of David Bowie or Bryan Ferry. With the addition of support from rising Phnom Penh stars The Underdogs, this could be a very memorable gig. You can buy tickets priced at $8 from the Institut français on st.184, or alternatively there may be some tickets remaining on the door.

Over at Doors Phnom Penh, Stephane Routier is setting up camp with his Alto Saxophone this weekend. Friday sees him laying down some grooves with maestro drummer Greg Lavender in Funky Jazz group Marsyas. On Saturday he teams up with some top players for a special sextet featuring Alex Scarpati, Euan Gray and the GTS jazzers Gabi, Toma and Seb. The ensemble will be performing a faithful rendition of the seminal 1959 Miles Davis album Kind of Blue.

With his work on the jazz scene and in Dub Addiction, Sebastien Adnot is a pillar of the music community, as upstanding and substantial as his double bass. Seb raises the pressure at Slur Bar on Friday evening with the incredibly good Jahzad, who combine vital ska grooves and licks with transcendent jazz solos.

French drummer Julien Mariani will also be busy on Saturday. Like his compatriot Toma Willen and Aussie Greg Lavender, he is one of a precious few excellent stickmen underpinning several bands in Phnom Penh. Mr Mariani, the hardest working drummer in Sharky Bar, will grace the kit more than once during Saturday’s epic Battle of the Bands, when no fewer than NINE rock acts line up to compete for a cash prize. Among the judges will be none other than Leng Pleng’s own Television Ted! Looks like this battle could become a war of bass, with heavyweights such as French rockers Sangvar Day and Khmer youngsters No Forever involved. The quieter acts might struggle to make an impression at Sharky’s on Saturday, but Jacques will still tip indie newcomers Sonic Detergent to do well on the strength of their charismatic, shape-throwing frontman Joshua Chiang.

Meanwhile, far away from the French architecture and Gauloises-toking coolness of Phnom Penh, a really special musician will be visiting The Led Zephyr in Sihanoukville this weekend. His name is Phil Manning and he is one of those rare guitarists successful in taking what we call ‘Blues’ and making it his own. Phil plays acoustic guitar and sings with real soul. Travelling from his native Australia, he will be playing a handful of gigs in Cambodia over the next few weeks. If you are anywhere near Sihanoukville on Saturday, Jacques advises that you attend this gig.

I’ll leave you with a couple of videos, and a couple of thoughts for your weekend. Here is Phil Manning performing ‘Weary Traveler’ at  the Marchwood Festival, and below that check out Poni Hoax’s ‘Down on Serpent Street’.  However much fun you have out there on the scene this weekend, please stay safe on the night-time streets, and in parting... Vive la France!
