The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 23rd October 2014

The new management of the Sihanoukville Music Store got in touch with Leng Pleng this week to let us know what is happening down there on Ochheuteal Beach. Mic, Dana and Mo also comprise a local band named the Groovie Gropers. The guys have created a space for musicians to socialise and jam, as well as being able to pick up some essential supplies:-

'With a small bar out the front we are trying to create a place in Sihanoukville and southern Cambodia where musicians can chill out play and get all their musical needs. If you're in the area drop on in, Mic is running the bar and Dana will attend to your musical needs. If we ain't got it we will do our best to get it. Every Sunday we are having the Super Sunday session - an open forum jam-come-open-mic. All musicians and the public are welcome we have great drink specials, freshly brewed coffee and free green tea. While your there have a chat with Dana or just browse the shop. Hope to see y'all down in the south...'

Sounds like a cool venture to me. Find out more on the Sihanoukville Music Store Facebook page.

Sharky Bar provides excellent value to gig-goers on Saturday night with their fourth annual Battle Of The Bands. A total of eight Phnom Penh-based rock bands will play twenty-minute sets in a bid to impress the panel of judges and claim the $200 prize. There are no runners-up prizes at the Battle. This might seem a little harsh at first but the night is more of a (boozy) music party than a serious competition. The seven losing acts are likely to be enjoying themselves just as much as everyone else by the time that the winning act is announced. Saturday's event will also be a chance to hear some of the better and under-exposed hard-rock acts kicking around the capital. Good luck to bands Sexploited, 3Sum, Dirty Jacks, Sangvar Day, Anti-Fate, Splitter, Adobo Conspiracy and Nightmare AD on the night.

Meta House hosts the latest in an ongoing series of classical music concerts on Sunday evening. Anton Isselhardt (flute) leads the 'Trio Melange' comprising of Matthias Krug (violin) and Aree Kunapongkul (piano). The ensemble will be playing works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and his contemporaries. This late 18th century period of music is referred to as the 'Gallant Style' and stretches away from the baroque firmness of Carl's renowned father Johann Sebastian Bach [concert press release]. Advanced tickets available from artplusfoundation@gmail.com.

For those in Kampot this weekend, the Cambodian Space Project will play at gig at Lightbox on Saturday. It should be another great show - following on from the success of last month's Made in Cambodia event at the same venue. In Phnom Penh on Saturday, skilled Latin-rockers Bacano at Slur Bar provide an original alternative to the hard-rock sounds going on elsewhere.

Stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
