The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 24th April 2014

Hi,
With May and June just around the corner, a lot of expat musicians are booking plane tickets to return home. I can see the attraction of spending a summer in the moderate and accommodating climate of northern Europe ...but surely I would miss the fantastic Cambodian music scene - even though the weather may be somewhat oppressively hot and sticky. Hardcore guys like Television Ted and myself will stick it out and keep reporting to you from our headquarters here in the back streets of Phnom Penh. The trouble is, we are now entering the period of the year known as 'band break-up season'. A few of your favourite acts might begin to disappear from the weekly gig guide as various musicians start eyeing their Cambodian visa expiry date and concomitantly searching the internet for flight deals. We already lost great funk band Marsyas when ace guitarist Greg Marino returned to Canada. I also heard that French-Congolese, smooth and sultry songstress MWAUKA may soon be leaving for Europe.
The Fumes are playing their last few gigs before lead singer and guitarist Karin Schelzig moves to The Philippines. The finale will take place at Equinox on the 30th May but before then the band will bid farewell to Slur Bar this Friday and Sharky Bar on Saturday night. Indie Explosion is a three-band bill at Sharky's - featuring support from fellow indies Dregs and Adobo Conspiracy.
The Fumes by Haig BalianThe Fumes told Leng Pleng 'We're extra psyched because Gem (lead guitar) is back from an extended hiatus and is ready to rock out. Expect a set list that spans 5 decades... but as fun as the weekend promises to be, it will also be bitter-sweet because we're rapidly approaching the end of an era... Karin (lead vocals, guitar) is leaving Cambodia in a couple of weeks, after 5 years fronting the Fumes.'
Fortunately there are still some great musicians getting their passports stamped at Cambodian immigration. Guitarist Aymen Ghali has been active in Phnom Penh recently, having crossed the border from Thailand carrying just a rucksack and a very unusual 'Manouche' acoustic guitar. This Thursday evening the Tunisian-American player jams with ska-jazz fusion ensemble Jahzad at Cabaret Restaurant. Note that this is an earlier show, starting at 7.30pm. Aymen will also be joining 1950's throwbacks Joe Wrigley & The Jumping Jacks on their 'Missing Passport' Tour of Cambodia and Vietnam. The Jacks visit Slur Bar on Thursday, The Bodhi Villa in Kampot on Friday before returning to Oscar 51 in Phnom Penh on Saturday.
Aymen Ghali by Tina MarWhile musicians of various nations come and go, a small group of hardcore Cambodian metal bands continue to make strong and uncompromising music in Phnom Penh. On Saturday night at Slur Bar, Yab Moung Records present Sliten6ix and No Forever. The live performances of these artists are always loud, exciting and bursting with energy. Sliten6ix recently released an EP entitled 'Nevermore', which is available at bandcamp. As the band themselves will tell you - 'SLITEN6IX formed in June 2011 and are the first Cambodian Hardcore band and the first group of dudes to have recorded and released hardcore music in Cambodia! The boys have a DIY attitude and don't talk shit.'

No Forever by Ken EdgarA lot of Cambodian bands will be making the journey to California in August for the Cambodian Music Festival. This is when fifteen artists will take the stage at The Ford Theatre in Hollywood. Last weekend, during a late-night jam session at Memphis Pub in Phnom Penh, Jack bumped into one of the stars of the show - Khmer-American singer-songwriter Laura Mam. Laura was very excited about the festival which will be a relatively high-profile celebration of Cambodian music. It will take place on the 3rd August. Check out Laura's video below entitled Soben Sneh. You can hear more Laura Mam tracks on her soundcloud page.

Until next time, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 17th April 2014

How was your Khmer New Year? A mere three days of national holiday does not seem to be enough for most city-dwellers. Phnom Penh is quiet again today as festivities continue in the provinces. Consequently, the upcoming program of weekend gigs is looking a little depleted. Fortunately there are a small crop of fantastic gigs to choose from on Saturday night.

Sonic Detergent play two sets of less-commonly-covered 'punk to pop' classics at Sharky Bar. Lead guitarist Tim King told Leng Pleng '...we're doing a couple of new songs - Kelly Clarkson, David Bowie... we've played 11 or 12 gigs now, one of the things we're trying to do is play songs that are a bit more up-to-date, mixed in with some old ones. We know that even the older guys in the audience at Sharky's are essentially young at heart – just look at their young girlfriends!' The band are comprised of four excellent musicians including lead singer Joshua Chiang, whose vocal range allows for more challenging and interesting song choices.

Meanwhile, over at Doors Phnom Penh on Saturday, a double-bill of rockabilly bands will be looking to get the dance floor swinging with some retro 1950's sounds. Joe Wrigley & The Jumping Jacks are joined by Woody Dares & The Western Toners for a gig that will be significant for both bands. The Phnom Penh-based Jumping Jacks are about to embark on their first gigs outside Cambodia, with a South-East Asian tour encompassing dates in Hong Kong and Vietnam. In the mean time Woody Dares and his trio will be enjoying their last performance in Cambodia before heading back home to France.

Also on Saturday, expect a late-night party vibe at the annual Memphis Pub celebration of Khmer-rock. Bona Thiem and his band of skilled musicians will be playing 100% Cambodian songs. If you haven't yet heard Bona's rendition of Yol Aularong's 1970's classic 'Jeas Cyclo', you are missing out!

Finally, a couple of great gig choices from the world of classical music and jazz. Meta House hosts The Classical Concert Series 4 on Sunday evening, when guitarist Salvatore Fodera will recite works by Luigi Legnani, Agustín Barrios, Miguel Llobet and John Dowland. On Wednesday, the semi-regular 'Jazz Club' sessions continue at Doors Phnom Penh with a specially expanded iteration of Made in France. The Django Rheinhardt-inspired duo of guitarist Sebastien Adnot and vocalist Kae 'Sylvie' Lhassan will be joined on clarinet by Phillipe Javelle and on drums by Greg Lavender.

I'll leave you with a video filmed at Memphis Pub last year, featuring a particularly outrageous version of Chnam Oum Dop Bpram Moi. I wonder if the original studio guitarist ever considered such lighting-fast shredding and tapping when his band recorded the track with Ros Sereysothea in 1973...

Until next time, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 10th April 2014

With Khmer New Year hitting the music scene this weekend, the annual exodus of city-dwellers will mean that many Phnom Penh venues will close. There will, however, be a great selection of gigs happening on the south coast as well as business as usual at a few of Jack's more familiar Phnom Penh haunts.
Ian Anderson - Photo: Steve Goodman
Sharky Bar sees the return of Ian 'Screamin' Delta' Anderson with two special gigs on Friday and Saturday nights. Sharky's eloquently describe the brace of shows as 'One night punk, one night drunk... Ian Rowlett Anderson returns to Phnom Penh to play classic 70's punk with The Stiff Little Punks and reunite with his old band The Lazy Drunks to play rock and blues covers'.

Ian is a legendary figure among Phnom Penh expats and one of the initiators of the expat music scene. You can read a lot more about the background of 'Ian the Punk' in Julien Poulson's 'Unauthorised Account' written for Leng Pleng. Also check out Scott Bywater's first-hand account of his times with the Crazyhead and Swamp Delta lead singer in part one of An Interview with Scott Bywater. The perennially-great Bob Passion and his band The Lop Lops will provide support to The Stiff Little Punks at Sharky's on Friday – followed by the reformed Lazy Drunks performance on Saturday night.
Oscar - https://www.facebook.com/oscar.cambodia?fref=ts
The Khmer New Year party celebrations start early on Saturday afternoon at Showbox with Psychesonica playing a special gig in the beer garden. This new band is a collaboration between music scene aficionados Jet Odrerir, RJ Marshall, Brentrix and Boom Baar. The guys are going for a tripped-out, psychedelic rock sound - which should go down well with some cold beer and sunshine at the very cool arts and music hub that is Showbox. Later on at Oscar 51, Joe Wrigley, Chris Hilleary and, the main man himself, Oscar host a Music Jam Party. Oscar will be celebrating both Khmer New Year and his triumph in keeping the live music venue open despite a few recent setbacks (flooding, exploding equipment etc). Rumoured special guests at the party include Kristen Rasmussen, the spectacularly-voiced lead singer of Mekong Blues Messengers

Phil Javelle - www.kenedgar.com
Phillipe Javelle and Lewis Pragasam are keeping the music smooth on Sunday night with another Velvet session at Riverhouse Asian Bistro. These exemplary musicians go together like hand in glove. Phil's left hand does all the work of a bass-guitarist – on a funky little bass synth – while his right hand creates exquisite chords and melody on the piano. He also sings at the same time. Meanwhile, the drum sticks of his partner Lewis fly around the entire kit. The master of percussion switches effortlessly between different rhythms and cues, from bar to bar and beat to beat, always grinning with enjoyment and providing constant driving musical momentum. These guys can make more great music as a duo than most groups can manage as a three, four or five-piece. They are joined on Sunday by the beautiful SufiahNoor jazz and soul diva, model and 'Malaysian Idol' TV show finalist.

Sufiah Noor
Those heading to the coast this holiday season are well-advised to make the journey to The Barn at Otres Market in Sihanoukville on Tuesday evening. An excellent line-up of bands includes The Kampot Playboys, Woody Dares and The Western Toners and Sinville Roadshow. The Playboys are a truly innovative Khmer-rock fusion band making their first appearance in the port-city this year. Woody has an excellent rockabilly punk vibe, while Sinville Roadshow boast Sihanoukville's best-kept secret – Tiffany X. The Californian rock and soul singer has the kind of voice that stops traffic and conversations and will bring anyone within earshot running toward the stage. Tickets for Tuesday's show are available for $3 in advance at Wish You Were Here on Otres Beach, $5 on the door at The Barn.

Before Jack once again jumps on his 50cc Honda and goes boldly forth around the traps of Phnom Penh, it is time to have a look at a couple of videos featuring this week's returning musical legend, Ian 'Screamin' Delta' Anderson. Firstly, the latest release from his current band Swamp Delta, 'Cut Loose'. Viewers may find some scenes disturbing. Just in case you were thinking 'wow, Ian Anderson has really let himself go...' – be assured that the star of the video is in fact 'The Oldest Rocker in LA', 'Johnno'...

...and finally a quick reminder of The Lazy Drunks in action at Sharky's.

Wherever you spend Khmer New Year, enjoy yourself and see you around the traps.
