The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 31st July 2014

Phil Javelle - pic courtesy of artist
Phil Javelle is a long-established member of the Cambodian music scene – expertly navigating different venues and styles. On any given night, he might begin with a jazz trio in a five-star hotel, continue with an intimate solo dinnertime set in a fabulous restaurant, and conclude with a raucous DJ collaboration in a crowded nightclub. He is just as comfortable behind the piano keyboard as he is on clarinet, saxophone, lead vocals or percussion. This Thursday night finds him in a cosy and elegant spot called The Alley Bar near the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. Phil modestly describes the evening's musical program as 'mostly acoustic pop tunes, just me and my piano'.

The tempo increases on Friday night with the launch of the beautifully-designed new Phnom Penh venue Duplex on St. 278. Phil will be blowing tenor saxophone with DJ Shaman. DJs Bluesabelle and Illest are also in attendance to entertain what promises to be a very large contingent of the city's finest movers, shakers and party-makers. Television Ted and I will try to slip in via the service entrance. No word yet of any plans for live bands at Duplex but, as always, watch this space for any developments.

A great line-up of bands and musicians gather at Oscar Rock Cafe this Saturday night to pay tribute to, and celebrate with, the very determined Oscar. The road to success has not always been smooth for the Street 51 venue and Oscar has not made a secret of the setbacks he has encountered in trying to keep his place going. As long as the Rock Cafe doors are open, however, there will be a great stage available for local bands to perform on and a uniquely unpretentious live music destination for late-night gig-goers. It may not be to everyone's taste, but the bar provides a refreshing alternative to the clean, modern, homogeneous hospitality-industry developments overtaking Phnom Penh. If David Lynch makes his next movie in Cambodia, Oscar Rock Cafe might serve as a choice location for the nightclub scene. Smokin' Kenny Smith, Pavel Ramirez, Joe Wrigley, Miss Sarawan, 3Some and the man himself Oscar join forces on Saturday to try and breathe a bit of life into the venue.

Sometimes the best live music experience is found in the most intimate or unlikely places. Kheltica perform a special gig at Le Temps des Cerises earlier on Saturday evening. The first set will consist of Arabic music performed on guitar, djembe and flute – see the sneak preview video below, courtesy of Kheltica bass-man Andre Swart. Afterwards the band will add several more instruments to render their own special take on Celtic folk music.

Brazilian drummer and percussionist Luis Arambarri (playing the djembe drum in the above video) is an expert on Latin music. The former professional dancer has assembled a new trio comprising of piano, bass guitar and drums to bring some authentic bossa-nova, Brazilian and Cuban music to Cambodia. Leon Kondo and Dima Verba complete Luis Latin Trio – making their début at Slur Bar this Saturday before heading to Doors Phnom Penh for a show on Wednesday evening.

The Phnom Penh music scene loses (only temporarily, we hope) one of it's best-loved members this week as Troy Campbell departs for the U.S.A. The Austin, Texas-bound drummer elevated every open mic in town to a new level of musicianship over the last few months by showing up and grabbing whatever drum set, boxtop or random item of furniture he could find and pounding out hours of musical rhythms. Happily addicted to making beats, Troy could rarely tear himself away from the jam for more than one song at a time – and the jam sessions will be much the worse without him.

Finally, a big shout out to our everyone taking part in the Cambodian Music Festival in Hollywood this weekend. As stated below in the fantastic video by Sok Visal's 391 Films: 'You can focus on the dark and dirty background... or you can focus on the light and beauty in front of you. Respect to all the individuals and organisations promoting Khmer Culture, Arts and Positive Initiatives. Peace, Love and Unity'.

The track is called 'Don't forget the Sound of the Cambo Land' by the very talented UK artist Gobshite. Until next time, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

"In composition you have all the time you want to decide what to say in 15 seconds, in improvisation you have 15 seconds." - Steve Lacy, jazz saxophonist and composer.

Electric Universe continue their long-running residency at Meta House this evening. The band is a special collaboration between Tim King, James Speck and DJ Nicomatic. These guys only play together as a group once per month and the music is always completely improvised and purely instrumental. Live electric guitar and phrase synthesiser are combined with recorded beats and sounds emanating from the DJ's turntables. Just to mix things up a little bit more, Electric Universe also regularly invite other musicians to jam with them. At this gig, the audience never knows what is going to happen next – expertly-executed guitar riffs, wildly oscillating synthesiser figures, warped, down-tempo beats or even, sometimes, extended periods of cacophony and white noise. The improvisational framework results in a journey through musical peaks and troughs. Long periods where nothing much happens evolve into frenzied and funky jams. There is a palpable air of excitement in the room when the musicians arrive in sync at the next newly-formed, unplanned groove. The music of Electric Universe may not be to everyone's taste and it would be hard to see the format working in most Phnom Penh venues – but in the very cool and laid back artist's mingling space of the Meta House upstairs bar, it makes perfect sense.
Olga, Ramirez & Ten Tipz, pic courtesy of artist

Friday sees three fairly fresh bands all playing sets around Phnom Penh at the same time. I have tried being in three places at once before but it didn't work out very well. So that means I will have to choose between Bacano at Paddy Rice, Pavel & The Ten Tipz at Sharky Bar and Sinville Roadshow at Slur Bar. Sinville are vocal-guitar duo Tiffany and Simon, formerly based in Sihanoukville, now taking Phnom Penh by storm. In the process the band have expanded to comprise the hugely experienced Alex on bass and the hugely versatile Julien on drums. You can catch their extensive repertoire of classic, soulful rock every Thursday at Sharky Bar and on Saturday at Riverside Bistro.

Pavel Ramirez returns to Sharky's on Friday without his recently-departed musical partner Olga Andreeva but retaining the fantastic and in-demand rhythm section known as TenTipz. This trio of dedicated musicians are serious about rehearsing and performing and it shows in their polished stage show of Latin and rock numbers. Swedish-Chilean frontman Pavel handles vocals and guitar while Cambodian youngsters Ten and Tipz provide bass and drums. TenTipz look barely out of their teenage years - yet they play with the skill and authority of veterans... but then, when it comes to Latin music, they did learn from Phnom Penh's own 'El Gipsy'.

Diego DiMarques - pic courtesy of artist

Diego Dimarques spent months schooling his band in the intricacies of his flamenco-inspired set. Diego's Nomad Trio performs at Oscar Rock Cafe this Saturday (no, Oscar hasn't opened a third venue – Oscar Rock Cafe is the latest moniker for the venue formerly-known-as 'Oscar 51', 'Diver Club' and a further variation on 'Diver Club' that I would rather not repeat here but which attracted a lot of giggles and 'selfies' from tourists passing by the venue's exterior sign). Diego's style of playing guitar and singing is so relaxed he makes difficult techniques that take many years to perfect look natural and easy.

Bacano bring an updated Latin music style to FCC – The Mansion on Saturday night. The venue has continued to provide a succession of great outdoor shows this year, well into the rainy season. Mysteriously, the elements always seem to comply with best expectations and, as if by magic, the rain stops and a crowd of gig-goers appears just before show-time. Bacano's show will hopefully be no exception. Chino De Nogales' sextet have a happy-psychedelic vibe that has invited comparison with The Grateful Dead. The Spanish-language vocals are refreshing and their show is a lot of fun.

One more shout goes out to one of the local music's scene's favourite son's - Scott Bywater and, former rhythm guitarist from the Cambodian Space Project, Irene Chuon. Please join Scott and Irene as they celebrate the birth of their daughter Leanorah in Nantes, France this week.

Until next time..... see you around the traps!

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 17th July 2014

Last night well over one-hundred guests showed up to see the musicians of Cambodian Living Arts performing at a restaurant in a slightly out-of-the-way location in Phnom Penh. The venue, normally hosting jazz, pop or other 'Western' music gigs, was packed to capacity with guests waiting to see, listen to and interact with a large troupe dressed in traditional Khmer clothes, playing traditional Khmer music on traditional Khmer instruments. The buzzing atmosphere at the gig and the attitude of the smiling young performers, who incorporated modern pop songs and drum kit and guitars into their show, was a long way removed from the dry recital or quiet concert hall that one might normally associate with a performance of 'traditional' music.

It is nearly forty years since the sudden demise of the so-called 'Golden Era' of Cambodian music, yet interest in the music emanating from the dance halls, karaoke parlours and high-class establishments around the country seems to be increasing. This is evidenced by a range of great happenings. Phnom Penh-based pioneers Krom and the Cambodian Space Project are breaking into the international world music festival scene. The first annual Cambodian Music Festival will be taking place in Los Angeles early next month. John Pirozzi's documentary film Don't Think I've Forgotten, first shown at the Chaktomuk Theatre in Phnom Penh earlier this year, will be having its world festival première (according to the movie's Facebook page!) at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August. Additionally, the Drakkar Band (one of the true epic bands from the Golden Era) will, either this year or early next year and with the help of Leng Pleng, remaster and re-release their classic album of 1974. Also, German documentary film-maker and music video producer extraordinaire Marc Eberle is currently editing a documentary focussing on the life of Srey Thy and her rise to the international stage within the Cambodian Space Project.

There is truly worldwide interest in the 'lost' recordings of the Golden Era Cambodian artists. These precious recordings are being kept alive in the few libraries of cassettes, vinyl records and album covers by collectors such as Oro and Maya of Cambodian Vintage Music Archive. Also, enthusiast DJane Sao Sopheak continues to bring the music to new audiences at her monthly Cambodian Rock Nightwith the next instantiation taking place this Saturday at Meta House. This is the kind of night that finds one torn between jumping up and down to the next nugget of classic Cambodian psychedelia and rushing up to the DJ to ask 'who is this ?!!'.

CSP by Film Noir Studios. Read an interview of the band with Soundblab.com.
The Space Project play Equinox on Friday night – a rescheduled gig following last week's spate of last-minute cancellations. It seems that the powers-that-be suddenly decided to tell venue managers across Phnom Penh on the Thursday that there would be no live music happening on the Friday (and, in some cases, Saturday) on account of the national holiday and internment of King Father Sihanouk's ashes. Therefore the CSP gig this Friday will clash with a performance of Miss Sarawan All-Star Band at Sharky Bar. Miss Sarawan is diminutive diva and 'Golden Era' acolyte Mealea Lay – backed by a band of musicians comprising Peang Kannika of Kok Thlok, Bunhong Cheak of Mekong Pirates, Joe Wrigley, Chris Hilleary and.... Mealea's twin sister Mealai! Miss Sarawan also performs as an acoustic duo on Wednesday at FCC – The Mansion.

The incredible force of fusion known as Dub Addiction returns to Equinox on Saturday night, featuring one of the young stars of Cambodia – Jimmy Kiss – adding his powerful vocals into the singular DA mix of dub reggae, raggamuffin, rock, dance and traditional Khmer sounds. Meanwhile, gig-goers who missed Cambodian Living Arts at Doors last night can see them perform Children of Bassac each Friday at 7pm and Mak Therng each Saturday at 7pm at the National Museum.

Miss Sarawan by Jim Heston
Over at Sharky Bar on Saturday, an impressive line-up of musicians gather to pay tribute to Tommy Ramone. The last surviving founding member of hugely influential punk band The Ramones passed-away this week. Blitzkrieg Ramones will play a set of 100% 'Gabba Gabba Hey!' Ramones classics, featuring fearsomely good front-woman Laura J Snook of Psychotic Reactions, Stuey Gallagher of Mad-fer-it, ace rock drummer Boom Baar and Robby G-String (he only plays the g-string, apparently) on bass guitar. The Ramones night will also feature a full support set from accomplished pop-punk rockers Adobo Conspiracy. As bar manager Dave Rabie told Leng Pleng, Sharky's has a bona-fide connection to, as well as a spiritual affinity with, the legendary American band:

[Sharky Principal Partner] Mike used to work as a manager at CBGB's in New York City. The Ramones, The New York Dolls and Iggy Pop started the punk movement in America via CBGB's. Niki Buzz was in the house band. Tommy Ramone was right in there, the pulse, the drummer who inspired the likes of Metallica and all the bands that came later. Nobody drummed that fast before! It's not just about the Ramones, but the movement that the Ramones started...”

Until next time, stay safe out there and.... see you around the traps!
