The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 30th October 2014

Certain styles of music make me drink quicker. On a particularly frenetic night in Phnom Penh last weekend, I stood at the bar watching seven local rock bands perform short sets of songs in quick succession. The first band, Sexploited, set the tone of the night with ringing punk guitar chords and boisterous drums and bass. Then the singer came on. Laura Snook immediately commanded the attention of everyone in the crowded room, stalking around her stage and growling the lyrics to a track by Scottish punk band 'The Exploited'. By the time the second song had begun, the 'mosh pit' was populated with happy, bouncing revellers.

One-drink-per-band seemed like the proper rate of imbibement, but during the second band's set, things seemed to be moving on a little too quickly. Could we continue to sustain this level of rock'n'roll abandon? Dirty Jacks' frontman, Tin, was writhing around on the floor like Jim Morrison. When he starting throwing microphones across the stage, the sixteen-channel mixing desk tumbled from its perch and hit the ground with a bang. Incredibly, it continued to work perfectly while lying inverted on the stage. Someone handed me another margarita.

'Boom-Baar' - drummer extraordinaire. pic: Bleys Bolton
I think the turning point came when someone offered me a shot of 'whisky'. It didn't taste much like whisky but the label on the bottle said 'Mekhong'. I'm surprised that this stuff can be sold legally. Things got a little clouded after that. Five more bands played. They were all good. Though my faculties were impaired, a few lucid thoughts did flit briefly across my frontal lobe. It reflects well on the Phnom Penh music scene that seven bands as eclectic and rocking and diverse as these are all happening right now. It is puzzling, however, to think that there is currently no out-and-out hardcore rock venue in Cambodia. Where can these bands regularly play? Is there some underground basement venue I don't know about, where Cambodian bands like The Anti-Fate, Sliten6ix and Dirty Jacks are meeting up on weekends to put on shows?

Another thought was: I hope Boom-Baar is getting paid tonight. The well-loved Phnom Penh drummer doesn't seem to be able to say 'no' when someone asks him 'can you play in my band'. At the Sharky Bar Battle of The Bands, he played four different sets in four different groups in four different styles of music... and he pulled it off adroitly. One of the bands Boom played in, Splitter, deservedly took the winner's title and the cash. There would have been a 'stewards' inquiry' if Boom had not also picked up the individual award for best performer. One of the runners-up on the night, French hardcore band Sangvar Day, are currently putting the finishing touches to their debut EP release. Keep an eye on the pages of Leng Pleng for an in-depth review. You can see Boom-Baar behind 'the tubs' again this Saturday when he plays Sharky Bar with Oasis tribute band Mad-fer-it.

Cast and crew of Hanuman Spaceman. pic: David Rosenberger
The Cambodian Space Project have been ensconced in Kampot for the last couple of weeks, rehearsing with the cast and crew of Hanuman Spaceman. This brand-new musical work will receive its first ever performances this Friday and Saturday at Kampot Traditional Music School. I will let CSP's Julien Poulson describe the project in more detail:-

Hanuman Spaceman [HS] is devised as a shape-shifiting, mind bending fusion of sounds, cultures and story lines - all clashing and morphing. Essentially it's all about a monkey that stumbles across Soviet-era space-junk in the Cambodian countryside. He discovers the power of technology and suddenly jumps at the chance of being the first monkey on the moon. But alas, not all goes as planned. HS is a show that is somewhere between rock-opera and jungle cabaret and it's development is happening first in Cambodia at the Khmer Cultural Development Institute [KCDI], also known as Kampot Music School, where the HS team has been encamped for the past two weeks, developing the show from page to stage.

It brings together Australian theatre production company Intimate Spectacle with: Brazilian director Carlos Gomes, The Cambodian Space Project, sound designer Rob O'Hara (Mute Speaker), puppet creator Tom Whittaker, Katharina Glynne (Lightbox Gallery), the teachers, students and community of Kampot Music School and a whole host of talented contributors based in Kampot. Needless to say, it's been a hive of activity with the building of rocket ships, space monsters, colourful props and costumes. A musical thick-shake of Khmer traditional, Cambo psych-rock, electro beats and, not least, the great Master Kong Nay - who even makes an appearance via satellite link to sing a foreboding tale for the eager young space tripper about the pitfalls of intergalactic travel. It's happening at KCDI on both Friday and Saturday nights - doors open 7pm, Hanuman comes alive at 8pm sharp. Entry by donation.”

Phil Javelle
A one-off gig will be taking place at Doors Phnom Penh on Saturday night when Phil Javelle and Joe Wrigley team up with violinist Graham Kemish and piano-accordionist/cor anglais player Peter Schwaderer (a cor anglais is an instrument similar to an oboe) for some 1940's and 1950's-style American swing and rock'n'roll music. Regular Jumping Jacks players Andy Potter and Aymen Ghali complete the sextet named Kapow! Hot String Band. You can also catch the Jumping Jacks at Sharky Bar on Friday night, before the band departs for some dates in Saigon next week.

Michelle Flemming will be playing her last gig in Cambodia for a while when she hits Wish You Were Here Guesthouse on Otres Beach 2 in Sihanoukville on Sunday evening. Michelle has a really great voice and a lot of stage presence. She doesn't need a band to be able to shine and usually just accompanies herself with some very understated acoustic guitar work. Sunday will be the last chance to hear her before she returns to Europe.

Until next time, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 23rd October 2014

The new management of the Sihanoukville Music Store got in touch with Leng Pleng this week to let us know what is happening down there on Ochheuteal Beach. Mic, Dana and Mo also comprise a local band named the Groovie Gropers. The guys have created a space for musicians to socialise and jam, as well as being able to pick up some essential supplies:-

'With a small bar out the front we are trying to create a place in Sihanoukville and southern Cambodia where musicians can chill out play and get all their musical needs. If you're in the area drop on in, Mic is running the bar and Dana will attend to your musical needs. If we ain't got it we will do our best to get it. Every Sunday we are having the Super Sunday session - an open forum jam-come-open-mic. All musicians and the public are welcome we have great drink specials, freshly brewed coffee and free green tea. While your there have a chat with Dana or just browse the shop. Hope to see y'all down in the south...'

Sounds like a cool venture to me. Find out more on the Sihanoukville Music Store Facebook page.

Sharky Bar provides excellent value to gig-goers on Saturday night with their fourth annual Battle Of The Bands. A total of eight Phnom Penh-based rock bands will play twenty-minute sets in a bid to impress the panel of judges and claim the $200 prize. There are no runners-up prizes at the Battle. This might seem a little harsh at first but the night is more of a (boozy) music party than a serious competition. The seven losing acts are likely to be enjoying themselves just as much as everyone else by the time that the winning act is announced. Saturday's event will also be a chance to hear some of the better and under-exposed hard-rock acts kicking around the capital. Good luck to bands Sexploited, 3Sum, Dirty Jacks, Sangvar Day, Anti-Fate, Splitter, Adobo Conspiracy and Nightmare AD on the night.

Meta House hosts the latest in an ongoing series of classical music concerts on Sunday evening. Anton Isselhardt (flute) leads the 'Trio Melange' comprising of Matthias Krug (violin) and Aree Kunapongkul (piano). The ensemble will be playing works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and his contemporaries. This late 18th century period of music is referred to as the 'Gallant Style' and stretches away from the baroque firmness of Carl's renowned father Johann Sebastian Bach [concert press release]. Advanced tickets available from artplusfoundation@gmail.com.

For those in Kampot this weekend, the Cambodian Space Project will play at gig at Lightbox on Saturday. It should be another great show - following on from the success of last month's Made in Cambodia event at the same venue. In Phnom Penh on Saturday, skilled Latin-rockers Bacano at Slur Bar provide an original alternative to the hard-rock sounds going on elsewhere.

Stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!

Weekly Wrap - Week Commencing Thursday the 16th October 2014

“The music created in Cambodia in the 1960s-1975 stands alone. Working in record shops people would say, "you should check out Cambodian music from the 1960s" but I didn't take the plunge until I came to Cambodia for the first time at the end of 2012. I had a friend living in Phnom Penh who told me where I could get a download, so off we trotted to boom boom records to get that first taste. My husband and I played the music constantly, repeatedly, for months. We were hooked, and the more I listened to this music the more I wanted to know about it. Who were these singers, these musicians? Where did these musical influences come from? What instruments were they playing? What were their stories? I wish that a Cambodian had written this book (with an English translation also available to answer my burning questions) rather than someone like me who has not grown up around this music, who does not have it inherently in their blood, who does not speak the language, and however loves it all the same. I have been fortunate that my passion has been received well by the people I have interviewed. As to whether they think I'm crazy, that is for them to say!” READ MORE
- Dee Peyok, Author.

Dee Peyok has spent the last six months travelling around the kingdom researching a new book about the 'Golden Age' of Cambodian rock'n'roll music. Read the full Leng Pleng Q&A with Dee Peyok here. Also check out Dee's travel blog, 6 Months in Phnom Penh, which relates some of her experiences in Cambodia.

Experience Cambodia's foremost modern proponents of the sounds of the 'Golden Age' at Latin Quarter in Phnom Penh this Saturday. The Cambodian Space Project seems to be gathering an unstoppable momentum right now with several exciting projects all bubbling up. The band's international status was cemented this year by the success of lead singer Srey Channty's stunning collaboration with Australian hip-hop group Astronomy Class. Cambodian Space Project themselves travelled to Detroit to record their fourth studio album with legendary U.S. producer Jim Diamond. The eagerly-anticipated result, entitled 'Electric Blue Boogaloo', will soon be released. German documentary film-maker Marc Eberle is also preparing his full-length feature about the band, 'Not Easy Rock'n'Roll', for screening on Australian television.

More exciting happenings are taking place in leafy Kampot at time of writing, as the Space Project continue to work on Hanuman Spaceman - 'a psychedelic rock opera conceived by The Cambodian Space Project in partnership with Sydney based producer and director team Harley Stumm (Intimate Spectacle) and Carlos Gomes (Theatre Kantanka) [CSP Facebook]. The production is set to travel internationally in 2015 and will be receiving it's world première performance at Kampot Traditional Music School on October 31st and November 1st . As if that were not enough to look forward to, Space-Commander Julien Poulson also let Leng Pleng know that the band are confirmed for some high-profile European festival dates next year. In the meantime, you can catch some signature psychedelic space-rock sounds right here in Phnom Penh this Saturday. Read more about the Cambodian Space Project in this great article written by Julien for Leng Pleng.

Several local Phnom Penh musicians will gather together for a good cause at Aquarium Bar this Sunday evening. Nas Bossalover, Unity, Lisa Concepion, Unity, and Bacano are performing to raise money for a small village in Phnom Kulen, near Siem Reap. Organiser Nas Bossalover told Leng Pleng that proceeds from ticket sales ($3) and donations will go directly towards building a statue in the village temple ('Wat Allong Thom') and purchasing foods and fabrics for the villagers. Aquarium Bar is a small and intimate venue and the performers are bound to create a fun and convivial atmosphere. Nas Bossalover himself is an especially interesting performer with a very sweet voice and groovy bossa-nova guitar style. He also accompanies himself with an uncanny 'mouth trumpet'.

If I were an optimist then I would point to the huge number of gigs taking place across Phnom Penh this weekend and assert that we are nearing the end of 'low season'. I would further assert that we can look forward to several months of great happenings and events. Such upbeat assertions would be quite premature were it not for the fact that I am aware of a number of really special music gigs and festivals scheduled to take place in Cambodia in the coming months. As always – watch this space for more details. In the meantime, I will refrain from getting too excited until we have got past the annual 'let's all put a gig on the same night for no good reason' festival known as Halloween. I will also wait until after the first annual Water Festival celebrations in Phnom Penh since 2010.

As for this weekend, it would be chaste of me not to mention a few more notable gigs taking place in the capital city of Cambodia. Nola Blues Band is a Saigon-based outfit that is well-renowned in Vietnam for their lively blues jams. Claude Spiese (vocals, harmonica), Gary Giss (drums) and Alex Thien (bass) visit Sharky Bar this Friday and are enlisting local Phnom Penh musician Pavel 'zargz' Ramirez for lead guitar duties.

The party starts early at Champa Lodge in Kampot on Saturday with The Kampot Playboys rocking their Khmer-rock fusion and Kumar Dey Et providing traditional Khmer music. The event is a birthday party for local expat 'Donkey Dave' and should be a busy one. In Phnom Penh on Saturday a busy gig schedule sees Sangvar Day making a comeback gig at Equinox while Bacano get ready to rock the riverside at the FCC. The heavy-rock quartet Sangvar Day have been busy recording six tracks for their very first studio EP (keep an eye on Leng Pleng for the low-down), while upbeat Latin-rock lovers Bacano welcome their new star bass player Ten.

Over at Code Red on Saturday, the Kimchi Collective of DJs celebrate their 3rd birthday with a special event featuring a performance from Singaporean star Vandetta. This talented singer recorded her debut EP in Los Angeles in 2011, since performing alongside dance music acts of the calibre of Four Tet and Afrika Hitech. Check out the video below.

Whichever gigs you choose to enjoy this weekend, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
