Menh Sothyvann is better
known in the music world as ‘Mr To’
- a surviving guitar hero of the ‘Golden
Era’ of Cambodian rock’n’roll. He is a current member of the reformed Drakkar Band – who performed a number
of memorable reunion shows in 2014. Phnom Penh gig-goers may remember the emotionally-charged
and rocking performances at Sharky Bar
and FCC – The Mansion. Mr To will be at Sharky Bar this Friday with his own backing band – reprising psychedelic
sixties shreds and playing many of his own compositions. This should be a very cool
gig. Check out the great video below, put together by Nichse7en, capturing Mr To
in action at Sharky’s with Drakkar.
Dub Addiction return to Equinox
this Saturday – the Phnom Penh venue where it all began for them back in 2011. Professor Kinski, Seb Adnot, Toma Willen, Chatria Chen, Jimmy Kiss, and Yang Pov
continue to bring their unique brand of ragga-dub sounds to concert venues around
the Kingdom of Wonder and beyond – with recent visits to Thailand and Réunion
Island. Any Dub Addiction show is
guaranteed to feature an irresistible barrage of heavy-duty grooves - layered
with rocking guitar riffs, soaring Khmer vocals, funky keyboards, ragamuffin lyrics
and the weird and wonderful sounds emanating from Professor Kinski’s onstage mixing board. This band must
be experienced live.
Also in Phnom Penh on Saturday, Vibratone present a more laid-back,
roots-reggae-style alternative with their show at Latin Quarter. The band, who play only their own original songs,
have recently been busy recording their first album. Click the pic below to
listen to a demo of the track ‘Phnom Penh Fire’ - recorded last year.
Papa Dub is a mixed-media musical project by Dub Addiction bassist Seb
Adnot. Check out the video below to see a mash-up of awesome sounds produced
by Papa Dub and moving images
provided by Asia Motion (NB there
are actually three different videos within this clip). See a live show by Papa Dub this Sunday afternoon at Le Pain de Jade in Kep.
