The Leng Pleng Gig Guide comes out on a Thursday or Friday of every week

Weekly Wrap - Commencing Thursday the 21st May 2015

Leng Pleng is pleased to let you know about another absolutely superb week of gigs coming up - featuring a bunch of great acts in a plethora of musical styles ranging from rock to jazz to hip-hop to reggae and even opera. Enjoy!

Eclipsing All Previous Gigs

Soular Eclipse is a brand-new Phnom Penh-based band featuring members of indie rockers The Fumes, together with local expat legend Jet Odrerir. The band will be unveiling their new sound at Paddy Rice this Friday night. Keyboardist Jon Banules told Leng Pleng : 'Richard is a real blues guitarist and Nika is a powerhouse singer. Imagine The Fumes ...but with a touch of the blues... perhaps some soul kitchen... hey, sounds good!'

Unusual Suspects: The Jumping Jacks
Joe Wrigley & The Jumping Jacks return to the Cambodian music scene this week with a new look and a re-booted set list. After a two-month absence, the quartet has now become a trio and the repertoire comprises of a few less country tunes and a few more rockabilly tunes. In other words, the band has moved from Nashville to Memphis! The Sun-Records-style three-piece are currently looking for live music venues with very high ceilings ...in order to accommodate their 'four-metre' rhythm section Andy Potter (2.1m) and Andre Swart (2.1m).

Something Brewing Up On The Lakeside

Art and Solidarity Weekend is a two-day festival of music and street art taking place at the former lakeside of Boeung Kak, Phnom Penh, this weekend. The event begins on Friday with a host of DJs including DJane Sopheak Sao and DJ Wah Wah alongside singers and MCs from the KlapYaHandz collective. The great music will continue on Saturday with Wat a Gwaan, Vibratone and many more. Entrance to the festival is free but donations will be accepted to help fund new Boeung Kak arts initiative Art Collective House. Organisers are planning Art Collective House as a space for young Cambodians to attend concerts and workshops and exchange ideas. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Bringing It All Back Home

Dub Addiction played their second-ever show at Sharky Bar back in 2011. This weekend the most legendary live music venue in Phnom Penh will be reunited with the most happening band in Cambodia. American guest star Lab Orer will be at Sharky's on Saturday to provide some very soulful roots-reggae vocals alongside Dub Addiction regulars Professor Kinski, Seb Adnot, Toma Willen, KCM Nayabinghy and Chhen Chantrea. This show will be the last chance to see the band until August!

Master-Musicians in Phnom Penh

Lewis Pragasam will be taking his weekly Starworks drum jam to the next level with a special Power Drums Show this Sunday afternoon. International player Manu Riquier will perform together with Ritchy Boisson, and Lewis himself, in a three-way drumming summit. Support on keyboards will be provided by Phil Javelle. This will be a highly unusual concert that has the potential to redefine what audience members believe is possible to do with a drum kit (or three).

More musical mastery will be on show at Doors Phnom Penh in mid-week. Hot Club Phnom Penh grace the stage as a gypsy jazz trio on Tuesday, with Seb Adnot on upright bass, Nono on fiddle and Aymen Ghali on manouche guitar. Mezzo-soprano opera singer Ai Iwasaki will perform selected pieces at the same venue on Wednesday evening.

Whatever you're up to over the next few days, stay safe out there and... see you around the traps!
